Default DASHCAM Thread...

Old Dashcam thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/media-53/...ussians-63596/

The tech has gotten around to the point that old form-factor cams aren't worth talking about. The latest gen are all 1080p or higher, have decent night-vision without the need for IR illumination, GPS integration, gyro sensing and motion activation, very heat tolerant, and easily integrate with popular software (Google Earth, etc...). The best news is that the good ones are now small enough that they can be mounted very stealthily and have decent GUI's.

There are a few more, but this is the best website/forum out there:
https://dashcamtalk.com/

Some of the better cams are under $100 and the best of the current crop of 2015 models is just over $100. For the money, the Mobius and the Mini 080x series continue to be frontrunners. Ebay is the way to go for buying these. Recommended seller is estore009.

Looks like it's time for me to upgrade... Mini 0805 looks like a winner for the 4Runner.

Default FINALLY!!!

I got around to installing this MINI 0805 that I've had for about 2 years. Buying the new Sequoia was enough to motivate me. The wife is currently on the fence about it, but tought ****, she should have bought a cheaper vehicle.

Anyways... tapped into the cigarette lighter like a boss. Power cable routed under the passenger side dash and up the A-pillar. I hope I don't need to explain the entire process of how I did this and the pics are explanation enought.

There are much newer dashcams on the market, but this one got great reviews at the time. I may be looking into another one for the rear window if I like it enough. More impressions to follow in a week.

I was driving up to Tampa a while back on I75 and had some lady change lanes into me clipping my rear quarter panel and bumper. She refused to pull over, we called 911, gave them her info and tag and they told us to pull over and let her go. We wait on the side of the highway in the rain for 2 hours for a state trooper to finally show up and write a report. They later went to her house but she claimed to have no idea what we were talking about, despite some pretty decent damage to both cars and swapped paint. The cop didn't place any fault for the accident which let insurance off, and made sure the whole thing was a complete waste of time.

After that I went home and bought a Mobius for both my cars. I hope to never need them for a situation like that again, but it's super cheap insurance in that respect. Plus I've caught a bunch of stuff on the camera that I would have missed otherwise.

I currently run the V2 SG9665GC, and SGZC12SG in our other car. All my videos are saved in a google folder. I'll try to get some uploaded to share.

I too use and still recommend the Mini 0805 (not the newer 0805P). Great cam for the money and at this point I think things like this are almost becoming mandatory to properly CYA.

Just an FYI, don't forget it is powered by 5V, not 12V for anyone wanting to hardwire. Ask me how I know.....

I'm running a Blackvue DR650 i think. Full HD, good enough to read license plates at a close distance in the dark. Bunch of other neat options like GPS and mapping.

I catch all kinds of silly stuff. I posted most videos in the bad driving thread.

FML... I get 3 weeks out of this cam and then "red light of death".

Apparently, most dashcams are complete pieces of chinese super-****. I just spent an hour at DashCamTalk browsing and can't find a single sub $200 unit that anybody has any faith in. I guess I just need to buy from Amazon and make sure I get 2 for the inevitable malfunction... or pony up $400 for piece of mind and still say a prayer occasionally.

I've got a thread started there to see if there is an actual reliable unit in existence.

Sucks man...
I really like mine. I format the SD card every once in a while just for a fresh start and it just runs. I never fuss with it.

Yes, sorry to hear about your problem, been using mine for nearly two years without issue. Battery life has diminished, but other than that, still chugging along just fine.

My dashcam is so good it caught 4 frames of this rock flying into my windshield. At almost 80mph.

I don't assride people, dude in white truck came into my lane, no turn signal. I had to get close in order to leave enough room for the person in the left lane.

Did you get a plate, and are trying to get the trucks insurance to cover it?

Yeah I got all that and the company name on the side. But it was a rock from the road. Not a bolt or anything off the back. In this case / state it is incidental damage. Plus it's a no fault state, so my insurance would probably cover it.

I have the Mobius. A little outdated - but it works well. Check out my hood going up on me during highway speeds.

I have this one and I like it.
I've had it for a year or so, though it was uninstalled for a couple months while I was between cars. It gave me a little crap one time but I updated the firmware and reformatted the SD card and it's been fine ever since.

I use transcend cards in all, never had any issued, even when parked outside in the Chicago heat.

Does anyone have a good system for saving the files? Or do you just loop it, or take out the SD card and upload it?

Yeah that's why I never hooked up any type of speed or GPS input to mine I also try to hide them as much as possible.
