Which datalogger do I buy?

in order of cost:
1. trackmaster for select android mobile ($5 app): trackmaster
2. maxqdata $499
3. used traqmate $700
obviously the most expensive give you the most info. although if used correctly, the $5 phone app gives you 60% of what the trackmaster does. if i wanna try a new line, i just look for green on the display. if it's red i know that line made me slower. it usually reads about 2/10th's slower than what a timing system says. but it's consistant so if it shows i went faster than the previous lap, then i went faster. i still have to use an amb transponder for time trial, but the trackmaster app. let's me look at the data immediately while on track (lap times, sector times, (faster/slower) and fastest lap. or after the session for more in depth info, so it does help me get faster. maxq seems like a good compromise, but i would want an in-car display and that would drive the cost up. doesn't seem like it would be convenient to download data to a laptop between sessions, but maybe it is.

Most of what I've read says that 5hz is fine for autocross. You have to be realistic while looking at the data. There are data 'boogers' with 5hz, I assume there will be less with 10-20hz. Prepare to throw away data that's boogered with outliers. At this point, IMHO, no gps logger can give you accurate enough data to compare line. You will realize this when you compare two runs separated by a substantial period of time, there will be an undeniable GPS drift. You can usually re-align the runs, but will you still trust the data to give you line comparison? Using data coupled with VIDEO will give you better line analysis.
These are just my impressions, someone else feel free to offer some better suggestions.

I use a D-Gps for line guidance with an ag sprayer. However with speeds under 20 MPH and a width of almost 90 feet the 1 meter accuracy and 10Hz update rate is plenty. I have driven in a truck with the GPS running and a 10 Hz update rate on speed is actually really fast. Think what a digital display looks like updating 10 times a second. MPH update on a 5 Hz system is probably fast enough. Position may be too, but I agree that unless you are using some type of prescription signal or RTK system the position data won't be good enough for comparing most lines in a typical auto-x. RTK is sub inch accuracy. Video is much more simple and gives a LOT of visual cues. An RTK system using position correction data streaming from a cell phone is free in some states, just need the hardware to apply the data. However the hardware can be expensive.

Hustler, I was serious with my suggestion of banging away at the internet and look for a good used unit. I bought a Racepak G2x WITH the dash display, working perfectly and complete for $400 off the lotus forum from an instructor. Search the forums of makes & clubs that are active at the track. Lotus, BMW, Porsche, SCCA, NASA, Regional racing forums, etc.

You should be sorry for your abject failure. I'm very busy succeeding so when you waste my time by following the directions, other forum members suffer becuase the time I could have spent reading and replying to reasonable posts is taken up by your failure in execution, and Rick has to pay for your wasted bandwidth. Next time, think about someone other than yourself and your self-righteous narcissism. Think about someone else for a change, virgin.

Good luck.
