We have a 2009 Freightshaker with a Detroit Series 60 in the shop. It let loose in a big way, and the driver drove it until it would go no more. Apparently from the time it broke a valve spring to engine lock up was 100 miles, with stop and go traffic. This will cost the trucking company just about $45,000 by time you figure the long block, turbo, lost core, and labor.

 

Holy crap! Is the driver going to be held responsible for any of it because he kept driving for 100 miles?

Detroit Diesel is comping the entire bill.

This particular company has 250 trucks all with Series 60s in them. This company bought 50 new trucks with new Detroits in 2009. Detroit Diesel wants to keep them happy. The engine has a 500,000 mile "no mattter what happens" warranty.

Wow. I have never seen a failure like that on a diesel. Impressive.

No, just a complete lack of concern for the equipment. Anyone remember that vid of the FC RX7 that they just reved to redline to see how long it would hold. They actually melted a hole in the muffler before it let go. I think fleet mechanics might have some of the hardest jobs on Earth in that regard.

 

Not surprising, it took overheating it to massive proportions for complete failure.. Much as I dislike rotary engines, thats pretty impressive.

I recall a CRX that saw a similar fate a few years ago, after being ramped, rolled, and wrecked before...

 

I had the high pressure pump on a stick on "full bore",it took out the injectors in a second,The rods bent in about 2 sec.Sometimes you cant help it,but he did not wnt to have the tow bill on his head.I would have stopped in the middle of the Highway,myself.

Does anyone know about the old video of a toyota PU that was taken to the extreme to kill it... I am not talking about the episode from Top Gear (classic!), but where a bunch of rednecks redlined it around a grassy field and it took going in reverse to kill it (my theory is the lack of front end cooling).
