I can't believe that the following combination of English words actually mean something:

"Honey Boo Boo's Uncle Poodle is a gay redneck"


And yet that was the jist of several headlines yesterday.

Don't get me wrong, I support homosexuals and their fight to convince the world that it's not a "choice." I'm also glad he is proud of his sexuality and was able to come out, which is something we should all be accepting of. What I have a problem with is the strange mix of popular culture and degradation of our language that it took to make this news and present it as such, and yet have it actually mean something to so many people (it took me a while to figure out what it meant).

While some might argue that this is akin to an article stating:

"Take a bite out of Ice Cream Sandwich or wait for the Jelly Bean?"

I beg to differ. Not just because I'm a tech nerd, but because those are valid names for operating systems, and the author goes on to list pros and cons of each option.

The fact that more than half our country can digest just a headline about people using strange pseudonyms and have it mean something just screams "Idiocracy" more than ever before. We really are turning into a bunch of idiots.

My wife showed me some show with tyra banks as the host, I was literally depressed the whole day and lost any ounce of hope I had in humanity.

Sadly I admit I didn't know the monkey slang until I was military and then in my ignorance asked a group of black friends of mine what it meant. All I could figure was it was southern from the context I heard it used and judging from the dialect of the individual yelling it. Like people from up north say pop for soda. It's important to be cognizant of the spread of ignorance. Knowledge really is power for our species. While I'll agree we all need entertainment, if we allow each consecutive generation to enjoy cruder and cruder entertainment, and supplant more and more of their capacity for knowledge with this diversion, we will perish, and possibly at our own hands.

I'm not cranky or old, but my soul does die a little bit every time these shows are being watched around me. I see no benefit for anyone who watches some of the shows (honey boo boo, teem mom, etc.). Do people feel better about themselves, actually enjoy the content, or what? I can't even force myself to find entertainment in it, I just lose faith in humanity and change the channel :(
