I get to (yes, get to, I hate my current job) retake the DLAB ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense...titude_Battery ) on Thursday. I've been wanting this for some time, since I'd much rather be a linguist than an "all-source analyst"

The test is the weirdest thing ever, wholly based on a made-up language spoken to you over headphones.

Category 2 is nice. Category 4 probably = deployment at this point. lol. If you see yourself getting close to 110, just start typing like the n00bs on here.

 

I'va taken it before and it's definitely the weirdest test I've ever seen. Good luck, it sure as hell can get very boring.

Didn't think I'd come across anyone with first-hand experience, that's cool. Did "they" make you take it because of your GT score or were you trying for a language MOS?

How exactly does it work, do they just speak to you and you have to figure out what they are saying? Wiki says its not based on languages you know, so how do they test your ability to learn. Give an example.

The only military test I ever took was the asvab in 11th grade, scored a 96. The military wouldnt get off my *** for 2 years after that.

 

Are you hoping to go chill at DLI for awhile? Up to 2 years in San Diego on the govt's dime is always fun!!

 

More like Monterey, but yes DLI/FLC is my goal.

Sam - I'll quote another DLAB help site: Be prepared to interpret instructions based on pictures. For example, a picture of a red car is presented with the word "ZEEZOOM". Next, a picture of a blue car is presented with the word "KEEZOOM". Next, a picture of a red bus is presented with the word "ZEEBOOM". You must be able to give the foreign word for a "blue bus".

That test was the most exhausting test in my life!!!

"Information about the EDPT is surprisingly difficult to come by. Unlike the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and the Defense Language Aptitude Test (DLAB), it’s hard to find people with enough memory of what went on during the test to give a good overview of the test procedures."

90 mins, 120 questions, and no hints as to what was on it before I took it. It's an IQ test, each question is roughly equal to two IQ points... I scored in the high 70's and don't know anyone (except one guy) who scored above 80! USAF required a score of 51 or better for computer operators and 71 or better for programmers (which was my 2nd career field.)

I was in AFROTC for a couple semesters and had to take it after I got on scholarship. (I'd still be in, but the school I'm at (transferring next year) kind of ruined everything for me and I need to get back on my feet. Congrats on the score...that 118 is way up there. I think I had a 96 or so.

 

So, after some talking with the career counselor, I'm in. My new MOS will be 35P (cryptologic linguist) and my Farsi class starts in August!

You will like Monterey.But then you will be deployed oversees in civilian attire with civilians with long hair that have their heads up their asses.

 

Isn't 0311 a rifleman? The marine equivalent for my 35P would be 2722.

It's funny you should mention the deployment thing, it all depends on where I'm send after re-training. If I go to an SF group, that's guaranteed deployment. If I come back to Ft. Gordon (where a lot of Arabic/Persian linguists end up) that's almost guaranteed no deployment.
