Do you advertise your turbo?

Just trying to get a handle for what people do when they get a turbo. Stick with the sleeper look or do you guys stick on knockoff Porsche "turbo" logos on your trunks or something very subtle?

Either way, share what you do.

patsmx5 02-05-2008 10:16 PM

I go sleeper all the way. I try to make everything appear 'stock' on the outside of the car. I wouldn't add a turbo or SC badge to it.

TurboTim 02-05-2008 10:17 PM

Sleeper. Straight cut non polished exhaust tip, offset intercooler that will be painted black.

But I do like cars that are obvious, and I love the sound of the part throttle turbo garble/whine on unrestricted exhausts when you are behind them. Paul's car sounds sick.

cjernigan 02-05-2008 10:17 PM

The IC is kind of a dead giveaway and soon as i get into boost the WG dumps to atmosphere and everyone knows.

How do you plan to paint it black without ruining the cooling properties? I have been thinking of doing the same thing.

Milton Tucker 02-05-2008 10:47 PM

Sleeper all the way!! If it wasn't for the high probability of my car ending on the roof, i would not have added a roll bar.

cjernigan 02-05-2008 10:50 PM

Spray the IC at an angle so you only get paint on the ends of the bar and plate.
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/sho...light=paint+IC

y8s 02-05-2008 11:05 PM

paint is too thin to make a significant difference in cooling efficiency of an ic. it's proportional to thickness of the medium and paint goes on thin.

urgaynknowit 02-05-2008 11:07 PM

keep the outside mostly stock, so only the sounds give u away,
thats what im doing

the outside is mostly stock, i have rims and im lowering it a smidge
rock a small front mount thats not really noticable
i do vta tho lol and i will be running a 3 inch line with no muffler

bryantaylor 02-05-2008 11:12 PM

i have a RFL, you can see my intercooler, you can hear my little 13g spool up, there is no hiding it

SamS 02-05-2008 11:23 PM

2 Attachment(s)
Non-American VW turbo badge on the back, which most people don't even notice, miataturbo.net stickers on vent windows, and an intercooler that fills the whole opening in the bumper. It's not a sleeper, but you can hear the turbo spool up anyways.

What about intercoolers in anodized black...? Should make for much stealthier looks ... :D

chriscar 02-05-2008 11:54 PM

I had a sweet black anodized Forge IC at one time. Now I'm running a Spearco with Swain BBE coating.

Fireindc 02-06-2008 12:08 AM

Just the FMIC and type s bov..

I like the clean look, not trying to hide anything.

magnamx-5 02-06-2008 12:13 AM

I like my BOV to be the tell tale sign ;) that and the fact that they are behind me for some reason. ;) :magna:

Exhondaman 02-06-2008 12:18 AM

Well, my olive-drab-fucking-green miata and gold rims isn't very sublte. But at least I have a little hp to back it up.

No IC yet (too dayam lazy), but it's amazing how many drivers speed up just to see if I'm running an intercooler.....as if the dual-pillar pods don't give it away.

The BEST part about driving a miata is that people don't know if you're boosting 6lbs or 15lbs. When I first got the turbo in I was cruising on the freeway when an S2000 pulled along side of me. He looked over and gave the loud pedal a little jab. I did the same thing except it was exclamated with a "PsShhhHH!". He looked over and shook his head, "Noooo..waaaay". I tried to get him to bite (I would most likely lose), but he wouldn't do it!! I guess he thought i was boosting 20lbs or something, lol.

This has happened a few times. Fun.

Trent 02-06-2008 12:35 AM

I have a miataturbo.net sticker on my harddog rollbar. Other than that, no real advertisement.

Of course, I don't actually HAVE a turbo at the moment. lol. I'll be putting a T25 setup together soon though. Probably a Begi-S kit to replace my old Greddy setup.

ApexOnYou 02-06-2008 12:42 AM

I had planned on being stealthy, but there is really no hiding the turbo whine with open down pipe. No bling in the bumper though, just a OEM evo IC.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Just a light dusting coat. Im not even going to remove it from the car.

fourwhls 02-06-2008 08:17 AM

With flares, stripes, and big ass tires everybody expects my car to be FI'd. It was quick NA, but looked faster than it was in a straight line.

I don't drive it on the street much, but when I do, I get all kinds of idiots wanting to race. Now if I can ever get this thing tuned, I may have something for them.

Newbsauce 02-06-2008 09:00 AM

Mine has the same type of exhaust as tim.. no big tip.. only thing that gives it away is the wide ass body due to flares, my MT.net sticker on the rollbar, and the RFL BOV.

Saml01 02-06-2008 09:41 AM

The ones who are saying they have an RFL bov, are you just saying its really fucking loud or you have the turboxs RFL. If yes, then ill be sending some of you pm's soon.

Zabac 02-06-2008 10:05 AM

i could care less what my car looks like as long as it hauls ass
around my area, people think that if you have any type of mod done to your car that you are a ricer and have a slow car, im ok with that

y8s 02-06-2008 10:07 AM

light coating...

Is this coming from somebody with a body kit, vented hood, and no FI?

Saml01 02-06-2008 10:19 AM

Y8S, what was your procedure and what paint did you use?

levnubhin 02-06-2008 10:23 AM

Sleeper for me. No stickers, FMIC is hard to notice. Exhaust is 2.25. Until you hear the turbo spool or the BOV you wouldnt really know.

thanks.

my procedure for painting? semi-flat black light coat on the front only. It's actually pretty hard to get it on the inside of the IC so for those of you that worry it'll reduce effectiveness, it's hardly an issue. The front of the plates is small in terms of surface area.

also, I did the same on my headlight surrounds.

Joe Perez 02-06-2008 11:04 AM

"does u advrtyz ur terbo?"

In CA, that's like asking "Do you advertise the fact that you are carrying several ounces of pot in the glovebox?"

YES :magna:
i've had the car for 4 years, and there is a very long story as to why my car is the way it is (not sharing :nono:)

I have had both the actual RFL and the ebay version, so I can field your PMs. Mine vents right out from under my extractor hood... needless to say its loud.

urgaynknowit 02-06-2008 12:11 PM

on a side note, i was going to mazda today, and a civic rolled up to me and revved,
it was a two lane road, speed limit was 45, i was coasting at 30 or so, i was screwing with
the radio so i didn't even notice him until he revved. i looked over, still in 3rd,
i got on it very gently, just enough to spool and let off,
he had no clue it was boosted
kid went from being soooo ready to race to turning almost white
then he gave me a thumbs up, and made no attempt to get on it,
i continued to play with my radio, i cant get it to keep my radio stations

Saml01 02-06-2008 12:25 PM

^ bahahhahaha. I cant wait to be able to do this.

It aint keeping ur stations because you probably connected the always HOT+ wrong.

urgaynknowit 02-06-2008 12:37 PM

maybe, it remembers all of my other settings?
who listens to radios anyway, i have a dvd in there with 600 mp3's
i just wanted to see if i can get it to work,

anyhoo,,

since my car has only like 150 hp, maybe less,
ill keep the front mount unpainted,
so everyone thinks im running some crazy setup
and wont try racing me

once the car has 230 hp or so,

thats when ill paint it black,
and try and fuck with everyone i see
that way, they wont expect it lol

miataspeed1point6 02-06-2008 12:46 PM

I want my car to need a double take to really notice it. I always get a kick at our local car meets when guys will walk past it 2 or 3 times before noticing anything is done to it.

Here in Detroit there is no reason to try and flaunt my turbo. You could never hear it over the blowers the v-8 guys run. There is a whipple Cobra around here that just SCREAMS.

kotomile 02-06-2008 02:21 PM

Straight-cut "tip" (3" Enthuza), shiny FMIC, loud BOV, GV lip..

Hiding it would be too much work.

y8s 02-06-2008 02:24 PM

I forgot, I should post this for completeness. Hugh Jass muffler on my 3" exhaust with a 3.5" single wall slant cut tip. Painted (yes that's right folks) black.

http://gallery.y8s.com/d/231-3/DSC01745.jpg

(haha just noticed how funny that looks above my sig)

IcantDo55 02-06-2008 02:41 PM

There was a guy running around here with and old 80's Dodge Omni GLH that was making some where over 300 whp that had cut out the center three feet of his front bumper and replaced it with a painted air to air intercooler. From a distance you would never know it. Nice sleeper.

Scuba_Steve 02-06-2008 06:55 PM

I had a VW 1.8T badge when I first installed the turbo. I have since removed it and prefer the stealth look. It is just too much fun when people see how fast a girly car can be.

Both of which could be totally legal.

bryantaylor 02-06-2008 08:07 PM

fuck cali

Bryce 02-06-2008 08:31 PM

My I/C looks like a radiator unless you notice the pipes coming out the bottom of it. I've got blue A/F and boost gauges mounted on the A-pillar and a Forge VTA BOV. Nobody ever tries to race me. I guess people just assume I'm slow.

Sleeper as far as the turbo, but the car has to be MAN'ed UP. I have to put rims, roll bar and some paint. I like clean and questionable.

LOL...LOL Only seen 1 miata on it's roof..It was NA and some kid (under 40) was driving...

IIRC there is only a 7% chance of rolling...

We're always in the mood to pick on some of the citys 11tybillion ricers in the S/C car.. I'll be damned if right after we got the charger installed, the next 5 hondas we encountered were high power boosted cars that looked like fucking trash. :nono: Anymore I don't even pay attention to whats around in traffic because either way its really just a waste of time. Its either dog shit slow or they've got a turbo bigger than their aznmohawk..

Then you run into the little tool bags with the scions and their aftermarket turbo setups.. I've yet to see one of those that could beat my stock MSM. One kid spent almost 6800$ turbocharging his toyota corolla coupe (tc scion) and runs like 14.8@79mph. Impressive.

Toddcod 02-06-2008 09:42 PM

paint

Powerblock on Spike TV had a special on certain paints that help reflect and despenses heat. They said there are a few aftermarket companies that paint the underside of V8 intakes white to reflect heat, and the top black cause it despenses heat more evenly. It is probably BS. But you should be able to watch it on line if curious.

I don't think it will matter either way. If you want it black I would paint it. My brother wants to paint his black one silver so it can be seen. Lol

Savington 02-06-2008 09:50 PM

I go right down the middle. Big fat shiny intercooler, loud BOV, and Miataturbo.net stickers in the quarter windows, but a straight-cut non-polished 3" tip at the back.

Sleeper enough to make E46 M3s think they can fuck with me :fm:
