Hi guys; as the title says: Do you have to have a SSN to be able to get a celphone contract in Texas?
As some of you know, my youngest son is going to school in Plano. He went to Verizon and they said they could only offer him a prepaid plan because he didn't have an SSN.
We have (his brothers, his mom and I) bbs and we'd like for him to get one so we can stay in touch with him.
My question is: how can we do this?
Thanks

If he has a job where he filled out a W2 he should have like a EIN (Employee Identification Number) number for tax records. I know a Peruvian man whose legal status in this country is questionable. He has used his EIN to get his driver's license, a car loan, a cellphone, a mortgage, utilities etc... All the normal things one would get that require a credit check. His EIN is essentially his SSN.
Most campuses have a webpage for international students on how to get an SSN. Some allow students to work on campus (and they in turn can get a SSN. Just an idea.
International Students And Social Security Numbers
Here's Univ of Dallas -Planos International site:

I think that site will do fine.
I know that any foreigner who's residing here for more than 6 months can get any contract just by presenting his passport. It still seems weird to me that you need an SSN to be able to get a celphone contract. He already bought a car and he has a checking and savings account.
Can always get a Gophone.
