Does anyone have any idea on importing rules from the UK? I want a RHD miata!!

Well its been a while since Ive been on the forums, since I sold my baby, I just had no reason to. But now Im longing for her back, just tweeked a little!

So let me give you a little back ground info, Im in the Air Force and I got stationed over in the UK. Awesome right? I thought so too, and now I need a car to get around, and of course Miata's are cheap as hell over here! AND, they are right hand drive too! Best of both worlds right?!?! So my question is, if I were to get a 1990 Miata (my heart is stuck on the na's) would I be able to import the car back to the states since it will be over 25 years old by the time my tour is up. Id love to be able to build one from scratch! And RHD is a bonus. So if anyone is sure or a gee wiz at importing rules or knows of a list, thatd really help me out with my decision.

Thanks in advance!

Please help explain to me why RHD is superior to LHD. I must be missing something. Do you plan on picking up a postal route? Are you trying to lose weight and want an excuse to never eat fast food? Did the bank in the city you live in install an ATM on the wrong side of the road?

I just prefer something out of the ordinary. To each his own is the quote I tend to go by. And Ill be in the UK for 2 years no since in buying a car I cant bring back with me, and they just so happen to make only RHD cars here. Who would have thunk it. I prefer input on import procedures over your criticism.

I googled "how to import a vehicle to the united states"

This was the first result.

This is why I quit coming to this site. Bunch of egotistic assholes. Like I said, Im stationed in the UK for military reasons, I need a car, they are all RHD and I want to get a Miata again. So Right hand drive is kind of my only option.

Ok so buy a Miata. Then sell it before you come home.

Use money to buy another miata.

Saves money, and the huge hassle of trying to import a car.

It's a win/win situation. Why would you bother trying to fuck with anything else?

one6withkicks 02-14-2014 05:32 PM

Because its a free import due to the military paying for it, they are the cheapest Ive seen over here, and beats the hassle of trying to resale it here. Miata market isn't big on a military establishment.

Ok so what's the question, then?

Why are my tax dollars importing a RHD Mazda Miata?

one6withkicks 02-14-2014 05:38 PM

I was seeing if anyone knew a straight forward answer on importing one. Ive been to the websites where it talks about importing and such I just wanted a more straight forward answer. Was just going to try my luck and see if anyone in the community has done any sort of vehicle importing, because it has to be legal with the states before. Im just fuzzy on the 25 year or older rule.

Your tax dollars have been spent much worse, believe that. Whats the big deal with an imported RHD Miata anyways.

Pretty sure you're getting your balls seriously busted because the website is "miataturbo.net" not "importamiata.net." You're looking for information in the wrong place. It's information that can be found far more effectively by searching yourself, as evidenced by fooger's reply.

Importing a Miata is no different than importing another car, so search and find.

So get one that's 25 years or older.

If our tax dollars are paying for it, then perhaps you should ask those people that disperse our tax dollars in order for you to import your mad tyte RHD chariot of gayness, as i imagine they've done this a time or two.

Interesting, this is why I come to this site. Most people here use logic, and reason and are pretty intelligent; those that don't get ridiculed so the information here is well sorted and valuable. For fun, I did some research for you. I won't troll you, but think about the question you asked and why everyone else is trolling you:

I asked a buddy of mine that works for Maersk how much it'd cost to ship a car from the UK to the US. He said off the top of his head about $1,500 without a container, with a container it's closer to $3000. That doesn't include import taxes, duties, and the time and whatever you have to do to get it in the country and legal once it's here.

For reference, I just bought a *mint* '97 STO with 103k on it, perfect compression, no leaks, and not a ding in the body or stain in the interior and a new top for $3,200. Much less clean NAs frequently sell for $1,500 or so. Being curious, I also asked a friend that works for a JDM importer what a RHD half cut would cost and he said he'd sell me one for $1500 (this has a motor and tranny and other misc stuff you can part out and sell, so really you'd only be buying the RHD stuff for like $700 or so probably). So if you really want RHD in the US (you don't, though) $3,000 would get you one. I'd wager that you'd spend less time doing the swap than you would finding out about and filling out the required import paper work. Even the $1,500 Miata is likely to be cleaner than whatever happens to the one you ship from the UK after the trip. Trust me, nobody on the ship will care about your car and it will show when it arrives. Even shipping a car within the states on a covered trailer has this problem, the people doing the shipping just don't care.

Laugh out loud, yes yes yes, since the steering wheel being on the right side makes it any more gay than a car of the same type with a steering wheel on the left.

I have searched, I guess I just thought wrong to maybe hoping to find an easier straight forward answer on here. My fucking bad. Thanks anyways though. So helpful! <3

Sorry, nobody here has experience in this matter. We all just bought Miatas for cheaper than the amount of tax burden that you're going to put on the country transporting your hairdresser's car across the big pond. Was way easier.
