No, it won't. You're not the only overseas Military guy on here, and damn sure not the first to want to bring a car back with him. Do some more research, not on car enthusiast forums full of anecdotal evidence, but on websites ending in .gov.
Trust me on this, it's much more expensive than you think. Need proof? Just look around. If it were cost effective, or even affordable for the average enlisted person, don't you think the CONUS would be crawling with "rare" RHD vehicles from overseas? |

Maybe he's left handed and the RHD would make it easier to jerk of his boyfriend on road trips?
Trust me rhd in the states will suck. Try to drive someone's left hand drive over there awhile. It sucks. Every try at passing is a quesss with death. I've driven LHD in the UK and rhd in Europe. It sucked long term. Can't see oncoming cars, intersections are a nightmare, and everything is a pain. +1 for bringing back something cool. The list of stuff I'd want to bring back when I was over seas would be huge. Opportunity is lost for me, don't squander yours on a rhd pedo-stash mobile. |
Holy poop!! you went all out biker

Buy RHD MX5. Do what mods you want, preferably ones that work with LHD and RHD. Use for 2 years. Remove mods and ship them home. Sell the car in UK. Buy Miata at home and add the mods.

Well this thread is way off topic, but i'm gonna add anyway. I'd like to start off by saying that i do see the other side of this, sorta...
Living in Michigan, i know this state is pretty much doesn't care about some things. Basically, 240sx vin swap your skyline, or USDM vin swap your JDM mx5 and you're good to go. Beacuse i'm so close to Canada, quite a few people around here have RHD cars(i guess it's easy and or legal to get a RHD skyline or whatever in Canada). Sometimes they cut the car in half and weld it back together. Friend of mine made an evo 4 or something out of some other legal to own car here. There are ways, most of the time not legal. But why? Try sitting in the passenger seat and make a left turn from the left turn lane on a 3 lane 45mph road without a turn light. Or try making a pass on a back country 2 lane road. (what TZ said) It's stupid. Why would anyone want that? Most people who have RHD cars around here hardly ever drive them because it's just a pain in the ass. Oh and PS; The military won't ship your car back for free, that's kinda funny haha. Also. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_8MPCKJQzPA8/So...jpg?imgmax=800 And. 5 RHD refused entry at NY border for car show 5 RHD refused entry at NY border for car show Heads up boys. 5 of us with various RHD cars were refused entry into the US yesterday. We were heading to the import show in Carlisle PA. Our customs agent let the first guy through in the line but someone else noticed a RHD driving past and they sent two chase cars after him. The rest of us got pulled over and the justification goes like this. "Not safe, no dot stamp on headlights and all the critical safety items, like brakes etc. RHD are illegal in the states. The only reason people bring them over to the states is to sell them." |
letter about skyline I don't know if the guy did something improper with his skyline, but it is not mentioned at all in the letter. |
I'm assuming he registered it.
|
Its very simple in the case of the case of the above Skyline: DOT didn't crash test it and EPA didn't emissions test it, therefore you don't get to drive it. As far as those bureaucracy are concerned the Skyline is made of nitroglycerin and runs on styrofoam and plastic bags.

Oh and every car in the UK is a rust bucket. My dads 5yr old STI has lost all of its heat shields, spots underneath, and even the aluminum is furry.

According to this, it seems they wanted to seize the car because it is not DOT or EPA compliant. Isn't that a bit irrelevant? I though you could own motor vehicles that are not approved by alphabet soup agencies, you just can't drive them on public roads.

This means however that there is a cheap source for parts and racecars (if you have tracks going clockwise). But it's a bit easier to import when you're inside the EU, and can drive the thing home. I have a rust bucket 98 RS bought in Glasgow, left hand shifting is not that hard to learn and spirited driving is done on close to empty reads anyway. Sure, overtaking when you are driving on the wrong side requires some planning. |
