Started helping my buddy do a few cars a couple weeks ago and now its turned into a part time job, borderline full time. Its cool though, cause he lets me do my ebay thing throughout the day if I need to (phone calls, emails, pack/ship sold items, etc).

The work isn't hard by any means and I actually really enjoy it. Rather than dragging my feet through mud all day carrying forms or getting covered in concrete, I'm just cleaning nice cars. lol

I'm going to be working on a website for him and I started keeping a photo record of his clients. He has a great set of clients with some really nice cars. Personally I'm waiting for the R8 to come in. :bigtu:

These are a few of the cars we've worked on the last 2 weeks. The '64 vette has been in a barn for the last 20 or so years and this was its first hand job since then. I wish I had been taking before pictures cause some of these came in pretty rough.

Tell me, Vash, what does a detail shop use on the dash to prevent shiny dust collecting problems?

New cars don't shine but most aftermarket dash juices do (armor all, 303, etc).

Just clean with water?

We use a special foaming cleaner that he gets from his distributor.

He's against the shiny "armor all" type cleaners.

Actually we have a couple different foaming interior cleaners. One is a basic cleaner and the other is for hard to remove spots. Both work extremely well and is better than anything I've ever used myself.

I'll get the names of the cleaner and where he gets it from for you.

y8s 06-03-2012 07:56 PM

awesome, thanks.

Vashthestampede 06-04-2012 11:02 AM

Y8S, he recommends this stuff called "303" for the miata interior. The bottle says 303products.com on it.

It's good for rubber, vinyl, fiberglass, tires, plastic and leather.

The other stuff I've been using is called "extra foamy" made by hi-tech. The super cleaner is called "crazy clean" made by sprayway. He said you might not be able to get these ones though.

petrolmed 06-04-2012 11:19 AM

Those cars look great! I've been detailing cars myself for my own small summertime business for the past 4+ years. It's rewarding seeing the before and after even when its not your own car. What is your exact role when you detail, do you do everything or just have a specific job? Is everything done by hand? I'm curious to see how a professional shop does things.

shuiend 06-04-2012 11:55 AM

Vash come down to SC. Then detail my car. I am complete and utter failboat at cleaning and detailing and all that stuff.

skidude 06-04-2012 12:03 PM

Are all these just cleanings, or does he do paint restorations as well? My next cleaning project on the miata is going to remove some light swirls and stuff, and make the paint actually shine. Now it is just kind of... dull.

Anything with a silicone base will do this. For some odd reason, people think shiny = good. Avoid silicone based products.

I use a light soapy water and wipe down with a microfiber.

303 i have tried. It's not as glossy and fugly as slimor-all but it's still too shiny for OEM look.

I will look into the foamy and crazy stuff. Most of the time just getting the scuzz out of the dash texture makes a huge improvement.

And like doppel said, microfiber FTW.

This stuff. Meg's quik interior detailer.

No residue. Will leave your dash matte matt.

since you have nothing else to do, can you do your dash in four sections:
armor all
303
meguiars interior detailer
damp rag

and show me the comparison? trans be damned.

Thank man! I do everything so far except run the buffer, only because we haven't had time to go over it just yet. Otherwise I mainly wash, dry, clay and do the full interiors. He mostly does the polishing and waxing, along with the dressings.

Everything is done by hand except for the buffing machine. He said you just cant get the best results without it. He's got a pretty good method worked out. We could crank cars in and out of there if that's what he was looking to do, but right now I think he's just comfortable staying just busy enough.

Yes, mostly just detailing. We can do paint restorations depending on how bad the paint is and how much someone wants to spend. Some customers want a basic detail, while others want the works. He's pretty open to everything except pet interiors and bikes

Every single cloth we use at the shop is a microfiber one. Whether for wiping while wet or drying, we use no cloth rags at all.

Yeah man, that foamy stuff is amazing. I told you 303 only because that's what he recommended, but he himself said he doesn't even do much interior work. After doing all these interiors myself and using the foam spray I'm sold.

That Mercedes SUV pictured above came in with the two front seats dyed from dark clothing rubbing on the light colored leather. The regular foamy stuff didn't do much with it, but the crazy clean and a lot of rubbing made them like new again. I was thoroughly impressed.

Soap and water isn't doing it right. Get a good professional cleaner.

To help speed up the interior cleaning I use different brushes along with the vacuum to clean out all the little crevices before spraying them down.

Damnit man, no before pics!?

Doppelgänger 06-05-2012 07:33 AM

What might you recommend for seude seats? I have 10AE seats and I'd like to get them nice and blue again.

Also, I'm convinced that all glass cleaners are a farse and are made knowing that the glass will attract dirt at a fast rate. I only use a detailing spray wax on windows after wiping with a damp micro (never use rain-x or similar products either). This comes from years of using multiple glass cleaners (mainly Stoners) and switching to waxing windows.

I'm going to start taking some before/after shots this week.

The first step was to start taking ANY pictures just to get him a portfolio started. Now I'll work on actual detail shots. Like before and after shots of the trunk lid and door jams, wheel wells, ---- stained carpets, etc.

The upholstery cleaner we use is TITS. So far any stains that have come in have been removed with this stuff. Spray and toothbrush the ---- out of it. Wipe dry and vacuum up loose debris. 1 hour later looks brand new.

I'll get the name of it and the glass cleaner we use on Sunday. Yep, you heard right. Working Sunday too! lol

Here's a couple Lexus suv's we did this past week and a miataer we did yesterday. The miata sits outside all year round, only covered during the winter months. Can you tell?

Yeah I was surprised myself. Apparently the husband puts Borla exhausts on everything he owns. Even the wife's miata. lol

I wish I snapped before shots of this thing cause it was FILTHY. Complete with a mouse nest under the wiper cowl! Polished up nice though.

I hate to say this Vash but if you're using photos for your portfolio, you're going to need better photos. The difference is subtle, but the lack of sharpness and blown out colors is hampering the big titty look of the cars.

Here's how I'd set that Canon SX120IS:

P Mode on the top knob.
Turn the flash off.
Turn exposure compensation down two dots by holding +/- and rotating the dial.
Set the custom My Colors option "colorsymbol"C
and... press DISP to set the options:
Contrast: normal (you may want to play with this--the histogram will tell all)
Sharpness: bump up one (you can play with this)
Saturation: bump up one
The manual doesn't give details on other options for "my colors"... so I'm guessing what's available up there.

and watch the histogram closely while you shoot. You want to avoid the graph bunching up at either end. You can use the exposure compensation to corral it some. And remember, once you overexpose a bright spot, you can't get information back--that's why you want shoot slightly dark.

Fuckign right on man!

I had no idea I could even get those menus!

Just changed everything like you said and took a few practice shots and they look pretty damn good in comparison to the auto shots.

When you say watch the histogram, where do I watch it?

y8s 06-08-2012 10:58 AM

if you hit the DISP button twice, it should pop up on the display.

page 45 of manual:

take some shots, then post them up!

Yeah, auto mode blows. Also if you can try to get the shots in the same lighting. The best would be the before and after shots with the car in the shade (like the garage) so you don't get a bunch of blown out hot garbage spots.

Or you can do like the the miracle creams/weight loss things and take a horrid before pic and a fantastic after pic

How many different jobs do you have vash? do you work 600 hours a week?

Quality Control Bot 06-11-2012 11:38 AM

I love the look of these but at the dealer here, out the door with the LTZ package it was $88,000 including employee discount special they had on and that does include all our tax.

Test drove it, felt cheap. Certainly not woth the 88k imo.

Right now I'm working 7 days a week. Between detailing, concrete and eBay, I'm probably working at least 70hrs.

Detailing is getting me extra money per week, plus its an opportunity to use the shop for eBay related reasons. Our shop is a construction shop, so its not the best place to be storing antiques and ----. Plus while at work I'm able to kill 2 birds with one ------- stone.

I have more pictures to share that I've been taking per Y8S's recommended method. When I have some time I'll post them. :bigtu:

Yeah Rick, $88k for that truck would be insane. I just don't see the money in it. Same as the H2 we did today, not worth the cash.

Faeflora 06-12-2012 12:21 AM

Depends on what you want done and how big the truck is (reg, extended, crew cab).

Trucks start at $200ish and get to upwards of $350 for a full detail.

I had my Jeep detailed at the dealership recently, and it was 200 bucks. Probably not anywhere near the level of attention that a true detail shop would give. So I don't think that price it too far out.

Yeah fo real. Hasn't daddy ever taken any of the vettes to get cleaned?

Some cars that come in get a full in/out for $150. It really depends on the vehicle and what exactly the customer is looking for.

90% of the cars get the same job. The extra is usually for bigger vehicles and if they want me to go crazy on the interior. I have a bit of OCD, so its a fitting job for me. I cant just clean it a little, I have to literally clean the ---- out of it. lol

Here's the 750il we did this past week and the 370 Nismo we did yesterday. We did a few other cars but they weren't worth taking pictures of (crv, couple jeeps, etc).

Holy ----, your car should be the poster child for the work you do because that thing was filthy as ----. BTW those shots came out the best...probably because there wasn't direct sun shining on/into it.

Do you guys do any cutting before you buff?

Thanks man! Yeah I agree the car cleaned up really nicely.

We only compound if we have to (taking out scratches). Otherwise we basically just wash, clay bar, polish and wax. Between washing and claying we also use bug and tar removed for any stubborn ----.

This week I'll be going to have my ebay sign done up so I can hang it out in front of the shop. Hoping to pick up some extra business while working down there. The side of the building I'm putting it on gets standstill traffic at morning/afternoon rush hours, so I'm going to try and make something that really brings people in. Probably a 6'x8' or something of that nature.

Yesterday we worked on this '98 M Coupe. I wouldn't believe it had 150k miles on it if I didnt see it myself.

I was fortunate enough to drive it in and out of the garage! lol

I got the shop owner to agree to letting me start doing bikes. He said he just never has and really doesn't even know how to move one, so he just tells people we don't do them. ---- that, even if I have to split it 50/50 with him I couple probably do 1 bike a day after work.

At least this time it was a Z06. :bigtu:

I was this close to listing it on eBay for the owner (he's thinking about selling it), but after overhearing him talk about the car and some quick research on current selling prices......he wants about $10k too much. So I didn't press the issue.

How much to detail my lexus?

I used this one shop locally with a angieslist coupon for my miata and they sucked. Put slimy armor all on interior. Blech

I just want a monthly interior vacuum / wipedown / wash.

I wanted to update this thread with some pictures of the job we did yesterday.

The welding shop owner has a dragster he races on his time off. I seen it when we did the foundation for his new house (complete with a concrete burn out strip right out of the garage), but this was the closest I got to it before.

There's a local show this weekend so he wanted the truck, trailer and drag car all done up. Took us all day, but he was happier than hell when he came to pick everything up.

He fired it up for me (wish I had my video camera) and jesus christ he just about blew my ears out. 1400hp and loud as fuck. Set off the fire alarm and had everyone driving by breaking their necks to see what the hell all the noise was. lol

BTW, the dude than tunes the dragster is the same guy that tuned my car.

You need to take your GF on a vacation to Charleston SC, and then spend a day cleaning and detailing my car.
