is a whipped coke like a Colorado Bulldog?

that stuff is yucky
|
Who said a couple of pages back that they liked Sailor Jerry rum? That stuff is terribly harsh. It bites like rubbing alcohol and doesn't have a redeeming flavor on top of it.
Buy one bottle of Ron Zacapa and you will be ruined as far as tolerating any of those harsh rums like it or Bacardi ever again. Speaking of rums, has anyone here ever tried Cruzan Black Strap Rum? Much as all rums are made from sugar cane syrups, Cruzan Black Strap tastes like it was made from molasses syrup and has a really unique flavor profile. I recommend it if you like molasses, as it makes a great rum and tonic in a tall glass especially if you go heavy on the limes. Very refreshing. http://drinks.seriouseats.com/images...zanprimary.jpg |
My mixed drink of choice is exceedingly simple- Rum & Coke.
On the subject of rum, there is much to be said. For the purpose of mixing with cola, fanciness is not required. Historically, my favorite rum for this purpose has been Cruzan estate light rum. It has a rather interesting flavor that I can't quite put my finger on, but it really shines through. Relatively cheap, though not stocked at most grocery stores. Lacking that, good ole' Bacardi Silver also works just fine. It's hard to really go wrong with rum for the purpose of mixing. A couple of months ago, I happened to buy a handle of Bacardi Silver that came with a little airline-bottle sample of Bacardi's new Oakheart spiced rum. I've never been a huge spiced rum fan, and when I tried it straight it was absolutely horrible (think Southern Comfort with a Ricky Martín accent), though mixed with cola I was really quite surprised at how well it worked. This was clearly the intended purpose for this rum, and I've since purchased several bottles. It only seems to be available in a 750ml size, however availability is far better than Cruzan (they carry it at the local Stater Bros), so it's become my new everyday mixing rum. As for a good sipping rum? I hate to keep sounding like a broken record, but it's Bacardi again. Specifically, Bacardi Rum 8 Anos Reserva Superior. It's a rather simple rum which spends 8 years on oak. Serve it neat at room temperature, and it can be savored as though it were a $50 single-malt. |
Ever tried Appleton Special, Joe?
|
Also, will someone take that damned image out of post #62? It slows this page down way too much on my phone.

I will also have to try a "rum and tonic" but it seems somewhat... off to say.

Another one to try if you haven't - and sixshooter might like this one with tonic - is 10 Cane. |
Another mixed drink I like is a Belfast Bomber:
Bailey's cut with Bourbon or Cognac |
I don't always drink mixed drinks but when I do, it's an old fashion with makers mark.

I really like gin Gimlets.
And Whiskey Sours - with Maker's Mark bourbon. I much prefer Gimlets and Whiskey Sours using Calamansi instead of lemons. Nicer flavor. I told Y8s I liked the same and he loled at me... :brain: |
I am huge into vodkas. Sometimes with a little water on ice.
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7020/6...fef905e8_b.jpg It is quite smooth and when brought down in temperature is quite pleasing just to sip. Add water if you drink in quantity. Took that pic of my "shelf" where i keep most of my stuff. I have been experimenting with coffee liquers recently as I used to have a Starbucks liquer set of light and dark but I have since ran out and its been discontinued. I have several different variations but nothing is the same. My favorite of the collection has to be Patron xo Cafe so far but its a tad harsh and needs to be mixed down to sip. http://gearpatrol.com/blog/wp-conten...n-xo-cafe1.jpg |

I will have to pick that up; I am a fan of Cruzan as a value rum and I am a fan of Gosling's Black Seal rums (80 and 151).

Also a fan of Mount Gay rums. For mixing with Coke, I usually go with Mount Gay or Appleton Estate.

It's almost like a smoother, more palateable "overproof" if that makes any sense. |

My wife was a huge fan of the Starbucks liqueur. None of the others we have tried have been the same. The Patron XO Cafe' is definitely one of the best remaining choices.
I tried the Godiva liquer and was not a fan, it was like drinking artifical chocolate. |
i have a nearly full bottle of the patron xo.
and probably will for my whole life. :ugh2: |

5 bottles of george t stagg
one thomas handy one sazerac. |
For those of you buying at ABC, consider branching out to smaller locally owned places.
Or, if you can find one in your area, Total Wine & Spirits is pretty great in terms of price and selection. :) Faefae - What's a "bottle of sazerac?" I thought that was a cocktail. |

"The 2009 release was named in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible the “World Whisky of the Year,” making it the best whisky on the earth. The 2010 release is comprised of whiskey that has been aged on the first floor of Warehouse K. The first floor enables the barrels to age slowly and gracefully. This vintage has a crisp spice, minty sweetness and pleasant oakiness." http://bourbonbuzz.com/2010/10/06/bu...ue-collection/ |

Patron XO Cafe' is so common here as a chilled straight shot or rocks drink that it is available in most liquor bars. It tastes much more of coffee than Kahlua which has more vanilla and caramel flavors added to it.

Busted out the Johnnie Walker Black and some of the new Vya sweet vermouth (and some bitters) and whipped myself up a Rob Roy (2.5 oz of scotch + 3/4 oz sweet vermouth + drip or two of bitters) and I am pleasantly surprised.

Tried my first Cognac over the weekend. As soon as I mentioned to the waitress that I was looking to try one she said I had to try Grand Marnier and got me a "taste" that turned out to be almost an entire serving. Tried it and was in love! Ended up ordering one. If you want to feel like your drinking like a king, nothing will do that like drinking cognac out of one of these glasses.

I like cognac, prefer armagnac.
Tried a sazerac for the first time this weekend. Loved it, lots of depth and layers of flavors. Picked up a bottle of Four Roses small batch. Haven't tried it yet, letting it breathe. |

also!!! I managed to get a manhattan made with Carpano Antica and rye when I was out to dinner last tuesday. I gotta say, I will probably never drink cheap $h1t vermouth again. having a quality cordial in my liquor has changed me. I feel kinda stupid asking what vermouth a bar has, but F it I'm going to pay for a $12 glass of tasty distilled spirits only to have someone pour a 4 month old bottle of piss-wine into it. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1327349506 |

My wife just bought this for me yesterday. $75 on craigslist, solid cherry. Shelves are removable, adjustable, and can be used with or without the wine rack loops. Top comes off to form a serving tray, and covers a removable solid white granite surface.

I've been enjoying mine neat, decanted from a plastic bottle which formerly contained a really foul-tasting soft drink. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1328743957 |
Drinking a blended Scotch poured out of a re-used plastic bottle in to what looks like a plastic cup may not exactly qualify as drinking like a king... I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.
Meanwhile, I can't really recommend the following bourbon for sipping. Without knowing all of the jargon and terminology, it's significantly more "harsh" than something like either my favorite "value sipper" Buck or something a little higher end like Woodford Reserve. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I...0/IMG_0191.JPG |
I suppose I should mention my drink from my birthday dinner.
Woodford Reserve Bourbon infused with apricot, honey, and cinnamon. The flavors were VERY subtle with just a hint of sweet apircot for the finish. |

I call it the Gimp Gimlet. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1329976021 |
I drank an entire handle of Bellows Whiskey and puked all down University Avenue in Gainesville, FL earlier today. Hooray for $9 handles.

I know. I like Gordon's in a gin and tonic...but I wouldn't use it in a martini.

I don't ever remember them marketing the stuff in my area, though I wish they would have! |
I have a Tito's Vodka bar mat sitting at my house. Want it? I'll trade you for something.
