See if you can drink the entire thing tonight!

Bryce 03-05-2012 02:28 AM

I'm a fan of vodka, tonic, and lime juice.. or just on the rocks. Tito's is good and cheap. I'm about to have some Polar on the rocks.

I used to not like scotch, but I had a swig of it at my dad's gig last night and really liked it. Don't know what kind it was though.

pusha 03-05-2012 11:10 PM

Yo, anyone here like Seagrams 7?

The 7&7 has always been my drink of choice when drinking socially.

y8s 03-06-2012 10:55 AM

this isn't 1972 jake. drink something with more class.

dont be bound by stupid names to stupid brands that are mediocre.

I just so happen to like the drink and I prefer mixed drinks if I'm drinking casually. I don't think it's as dated as, say, a Tom Collins would be. Jack Burns is the only guy to still drink those and he's 50 years behind the times.

Trust me bro, I could drink you under the table any day of the week. I don't need some "harder" drink to feel like a man. Only little p u s s yboys like you think that stuff puts hair on your chest.

Scrappy Jack 03-06-2012 11:42 AM

I have to side with y8s here. This thread is for drink snobs, not for well drinks and convenience store beers.

Who is drinking Tom Collins'?

The date of invention of a drink has little to do with how classy it is. A name brand of so-so canadian whisky plus a do-they-still-sell-that soft drink full of HFCS mixed together is just not classy.

I guess the mistake you seem to be making is based on the fact that you think drinking should be comprised of the things that keep Costco in business: massive volumes at discount prices.

You go ahead and drink yourself under the table while I waste my money on stuff that's really good.

Fine.

While in Edinburgh, I purchased a bottle of Glenfiddich Havana Reserve -- a 21 y/o single malt which is aged in Cuban rum barrels.

How many of these ever made it to the states? ;)

I'll agree with you on the Canadian whiskey.

I'll disagree on the esoteric soft drink.

Behold, Schweppes' bitter Lemon!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1331054436

Sadly, you can't buy this in the US. I've only seen it in Germany, though I understand it to also be popular in Russia as well as the rest of Europe.

I can't really describe the flavor. It's like sour, chalky, carbonated lemonade. I'm sure it'd be horrible by itself. But add some Bombay Sapphire gin and it turns into something really wonderful.

pusha 03-06-2012 12:22 PM

gin + water

shot of gin, sip of room-temperature water. IDK why, but it's delicious. Only the flavor of juniper berries up in that mofo.

isn't that all gin really is? herbs added to neutral spirit?

JasonC SBB 03-06-2012 02:14 PM

Would Tito's Vodka plus above Bitter Lemons = Hendricks gin?

I looooove Hendricks Gimlets! Especially with a bit of cucumber juice added!

I'm not nearly as well-versed in gin as I am in rum and tequila, and I don't believe I've ever tried Hendricks. Cucumber-flavored gin strikes me as... odd.

y8s 03-06-2012 03:47 PM

joe: most gin has "other stuff" in it besides juniper. except maybe booths?

As a red-blooded American, you should ditch that floppy-headed whisky and switch exclusively to the Official Spirit of the United States of America: bourbon.

And yes, I am a big fan of mint juleps even though it's hard to sound suave when ordering one. :D Then again, I like mojitos and mint in general.

Speaking of mojito: what is the proper mixer for guys here?

I very much dislike the mojito, I also dislike all rums and most vodkas. Yet I purchased a bottle of rum-infused whiskey. Hmm.

It's tough to get a proper mint julep this far south so I'll typically make my own.

I won't turn down a mojito if it's offered to me on a sunny day. Especially if there's a nice breeze.

The resort where I used to summer, Palmetto Bluff, really made me fall in love with sweet tea & vodka. I know it's sort of a fairy drink, but they go down like water on hot days. I've tried Firefly and other premixes but none compare to the "real deal". Probably the only vodka drink I enjoy.

Yes my friends it is BACON flavored Vodka. Blind tasting and people say they think they just drank bacon. Its a fad I'm sure it will go away.

My latest fav is Tuaca and coke......delish. I was always a Captain and coke guy till I tried Tuaca and I am hooked. Try it!

The scotch is for drinking neat or maybe with the occasional Rob Roy if I'm feeling daring. The Rye is for the Manhattan brethren or blue-collar neat.

I dont know why but I like to have a blue collar whisky and a white collar whisky on hand for when I'm in either mood.

I almost picked up a bottle of Old Overholt instead of the Bulleit but since I don't know what I am doing with Rye and they were out of Russels Reserve Rye, I got the one above.

Scrappy Jack 03-08-2012 09:24 AM

I dig the Bulleit Rye. If you can find it, Buck 90 is a great "budget sippin'" bourbon.

mgeoffriau 03-08-2012 09:34 AM

Bulleit Rye makes a great sazerac.

Solid. Thanks for the positive feedback.

I just happen to have an abandoned bottle of Pernod and Angostura and Peychaud's bitters to toss in with it. No lemon though.

What's your sazerac recipe?

mgeoffriau 03-08-2012 11:04 AM

Originally Posted by Scrappy Jack (Post 845173)

Nothing specific, I'm not picky. A rye whiskey, dash of bitters, simple syrup, in a glass swirled and coated with any anise liquor (I usually have Pernod on hand) and a lemon peel spritzed into the glass and then garnish with the peel. The beauty of a sazerac to me is the depth and layers of the flavors, and doesn't rely on any particular recipe.

y8s 03-08-2012 01:53 PM

It's really unfortunate that I'm not a big fan of anisey-licoricey flavors.

mgeoffriau 03-08-2012 01:58 PM

Really? I love it. Some Pernod with a bit of water over some ice is the ticket on hot day. Love seeing the Pernod cloud up as it mixes with the water.

Scrappy Jack 03-08-2012 08:46 PM

A recipe I found mentioned "coating" the glass with Pernod (or Absinthe or some other rare liquor) and then pouring it out. Is that your method? That seems too wasteful for me to get on board with...

mgeoffriau 03-08-2012 09:20 PM

Yeah, but I'm a tightwad. Pernod isn't 21 year scotch. Use a little, coat the class, pour the extra back in the bottle. It'll be fine.

alternatively the recipes suggest chilling the glass first and then doing the swirl with the liqueur.

honestly, you should be able to pour a small enough amount in there to get it all coated and not have much left over beyond a dribble. I'm talking a 1/4 oz or less.

y8s 03-09-2012 08:54 PM

OK.

I am not a fan of the Sazerac. not only does it ruin the taste of the rye but it makes me all tingly with a flavor I detest.

oh well, worth a shot. anyone want a really old and full bottle of pernod?

Found it: sparkling water. We had dinner at The Columbia recently and that's what they made theirs with. Not as syrupy as the average bar-made mojito that uses Sprite/7-Up and not as bitter as one made with soda water/seltzer.

The Bulleit Rye is great in Old Fashioneds for something a little different. As a "rye light" bourbon, the regular Bulleit still seems to have a bit more rye spiciness to it.

I am looking to pick up a gift for someone and need some help. I've checked Google and Amazon without much success so far. I'm looking for a good quality, 8 oz flask, preferably something that is wrapped in a tooled or "vintaged" leather. Unfortunately, it's one of those "I'll know it when I see it" things, so I can't cite a specific design.

Anyone have any recommendations on other places to look?

i'm a manhatan guy, streight up extra dry. which for those of you who don't know the drink, means i like whisky, but don't want people to think that i drink out of the bottle. my problem now is that i found Knob Creek single barrel, and fell in love with it, but it costs an arm and a leg when at the bar, so now i start with that, and as the night progresses i go for cheeper and cheeper burbon. then i wake up with a smakk elephant where my brain used to be.

Faeflora 05-04-2012 03:21 PM

whiskey.

the reason you get hung over with whiskey and not vodka is because it is full of cogeners

which is chemical stuff. serious.

drehl 05-06-2012 08:34 PM

i get a hangover regardless of what i drink, and i'm not a huge fan of vodka. high end liquor doesn't hurt quite as bad in the morning as the cheap stuff.

I like the Four Roses but haven't heard of or tried the Boodle's. If you ever see it, I just got turned on to Eagle Rare. It's a bit "spicy" with more rye content, I believe.

Boodle's British Gin -- better than the cheap brands, less expensive than Hendrick's.

I think I've seen Eagle Rare in a store recently. The Four Roses SB was my consolation prize -- the store also had a bottle of Jefferson Reserve Presidential Select which I lusted after but could not afford.

Calvados = apple brandy

Pere Magloire XO is very good stuff.

I'm having Jose Cuervo Silver right now. Do y'all find gold better for sipping, and silver better for margaritas and such? I find that I prefer it that way.

Scrappy Jack sent me here, as I'm taking a rest from the politics forum.

My wife made me a GREAT drink last night with my favorite ingredient. Our cupboards are a bit bare (need to go to the store), so I asked her how she made it; juice box and vodka.

Thank God for little kids in the house! ;)

Check out a web site called www.TheHoochLife.com . My friend started it, and it's dedicated to small U.S. distilleries and the awesome cocktails that can be generated.

What flavor juice box? You've got to be specific around here. ;)

I'll make sure to check it out. In the meantime, you (and/or he) might want to review 40 things every Drunkard must do before they die

On a separate note, I've been trying to make "skinnier" cocktails as part of my fitness regimen. I made the mistake of picking up some Tillet Farms organic cherries and they make a delicious Old Fashioned with some decent bourbon and sparkling water. Instead of simple syrup, I use a bit of the cherry juice they are bottled with.

I also made my own sweet and sour mix today. I used fresh squeezed lime juice, a bit of fresh squeezed lemon juice and some Florida's Own orange juice with no pulp (no oranges in the house). I mixed it with a gold rum (Appleton Estates) and a splash of sparkling water. Not too shabby.

I also picked up some whisky stones to use in cocktails as a compliment to ice. I stopped using them in Old Fashioneds, though - I can't get to the cherries if I use them!
