Any of you guys use it? What do you think about it?

I just started a trial and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it.

a CMS is a CMS is a CMS. what're you using it for? simple stuff is easier with wordpress or the like. if you're doing a massive ecommerice type site, maybe joomla is better suited.

I need a very basic site.

Things I need:

Contact info
Description of services
Pricing
Active listings page
Customer feedback
Create an appointment
About me

I'm sure as I make it I might add/remove something, but that's basically what I'm looking for. I want it to be simple and to the point, but look good as well.

My gf's father is a big wig computer guy and he recommended I use them. I have frontpage and hate it. I tried dreamweaver and just couldn't learn it. So now I'm trying something new.

I'm checking out Wordpress now.

Can I use something like this to create the site and then just upload it to the server I'm already hosted on? Or do I have to switch my hosting over to them as well?

wordpress has lots of add-ons that let you customize pages. at the risk of embarassing myself, I made my wedding website in wordpress.
http://www.mattandjenn2010.com

you can do as much or as little as you want.

you can upload it to your own site.

and it's not just a blog. you can remove the blog parts and just put in static pages.

you can also monkey with the CSS if you want or just use an off the shelf skin.

Well since I started the trial with Joomla I figured I might as well **** around with her a bit before I try something else.

I watched all the tutorials and even went back and re-watched a few of them. Its probably easy enough for someone that knows what their doing, but a lot of this is foreign to me and its kind of a learn as I go type thing.

This is about how far I got after a hour or so of fooling around with it. I'm not sure exactly how I want the layout to be just yet, but I figured I would post it up here and see what you guys think of it so far.

Here's the link to my trial site

looks good.. but the main graphic and prep/list/ship graphics are all just too huge. maybe cut them all in half?

interesting concept though.

I'm hoping to get your package out this week. It took a little longer than I expected to have it ready.

Thanks man.

That's the first thing my gf said when I showed her. "Your logo is so huge!". lol

I'm going to spend as much time on it as I can today. I'll try resizing everything 50% and see how that looks.

I'm still not sure how this whole Joomla! thing works. I currently have my .com hosted with lunarpages and I'd like to stay with them, but switch to using this joomla design instead. I'm not sure if I can do that though.....

lunarpages shouldn't care... i think you can install most things with just FTP access but if you have shell access, you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Ok....so Joomla doesn't need to be hosted on the cloudaccess server then? I was under the impression that I needed to host it on their server in order to use it.

Basically I want this. I have the .com already and know my way around the lunarpages CP enough that I'd like to stay with them. Not to mention the price is right. I'd like to design a Joomla! site and have it on that .com once its all finished.

I have very basic html knowledge and would prefer a "template editor" to help speed things along. After some searching on youtube and watching tutorials I'm even more confused than I was before. I'm not sure what I should use to make it. I like the look of what I have now, but I'm trying to change background colors of the modules and its not working.

Its funny. Normally my weekends would consist of going out drinking and getting into trouble, now I'm home in front of the computer watching tutorials and waiting for my gf to get home from her parent's. lol

Any help on this is much appreciated btw I need to get something up for myself by spring cleanup time and then I'd like to work on one for the foundation company. I also have 3 other .coms sitting dormant until I have time to work on those. Too many ******* projects going on at once!!

i'm not a web developer at all... I just play around. I have dreamhost and have, at some pont, installed:

gallery
gallery2
roundcube mail
horde
squirrelmail
mediawiki
joomla
dotproject
wordpress

and probably other stuff... the point is, I've got one account there and several domains, each with 0, 1, or more of these installed (and most aren't used--just to play around)

DH has a lot of "one click installs" that are simply preconfigured for their services/servers but everything else is pretty much "unzip and run the configurator" easy to install.

from the looks of lunarpages site, it looks like they do something similar?
http://www.lunarpages.com/hosting-so...basic-hosting/
http://wiki.lunarpages.com/Category:Third_Party_Scripts

unfortunately their wiki is a little lacking but might help you.

the "template editor" is one thing I liked about wordpress... it's easy enough to set up a theme page with some customizations and then each addition is literally drag and drop or edited like a wysiwig blog entry.

Up until 3am and still ******* around with it this morning.

I was finally able to understand how joomla works and what the hell it actually is. I downloaded filezilla and put the downloaded joomla files into my public_html folder and after some more reading I made a database and installed joomla on my site!!

Now I'm at the point of getting a template I like. I liked the one I used in the link to my trial page, but I installed it to my site only to have some error pop up. I was trying to get around it and just use the damn template, but I registered on the joomla forum to ask around and a guy made it pretty clear why it didn't work. Seems some of the 1.5 templates don't work on the newly released 1.6 version, so I'm SOL.

Thats where I stand now. I'd like to make something clean and simple like that template allowed, so its shitty I cant use it. Figures.

I'm excited to learn something new. Joining the forum was probably the best thing I could have done. Most questions have already been answered, so it makes troubleshooting pretty self explanatory once you start learning what to search for.

Y8S, if you recommend I try out anything that might be helpful please let me know. Anything involving making a template or graphic design stuff would be awesome.
