We usually use a small 12 GA 3 shell with either #6 (or #8 shot) it does the job safely from a distance...

I have cleared my car...If you hate to use poison in your car WD-40 works great. Literally the whole nest just froze, died, and i scraped the thing out in 2 minutes.
