Fuck Jack-In-The-Box!

For the second time in my life, I'm in the ER at midnight because of that fucking place. On occasion, I've been known to drive 20 miles for a Sourdough Jack when I just had to have one, and I do love their breakfast croissants... but FUCK! The wife and I picked up lunch on the way home from errands and her Spicy Chicken Sandwich is the reason we're here. She's pretty messed up. Fucking food poisoning!

The only good thing is that she worked in this ER for 4 years so she knows everybody, and THANK YOU SWEET BABY JESUS, it's empty tonight... seriously, we're the only people in here.

OH... and there's free wifi!

NA6C-Guy 04-13-2010 03:11 AM

Sucks to hear. Glad we don't have them around here, I would be tempted to eat there.

WonTon 04-13-2010 03:13 AM

You have Jack's, same thing. Fuck that place, yea it's good on occasion but I've heard too many of these stories. Hope she feels better quick.

gospeed81 04-13-2010 06:32 AM

When I lived in Lubbock there were no Jack-in-the-Boxes at all in that town. Closest one was 5hrs away, a little over an hour outside of Dallas on the few holidays it was worth driving home.

I later found out that JitB lost the battle to Carl's Jr's in Lubbock after they had consistent cases of food poisoning and other health code violations, and were pretty much kicked out of town.

I can still remember sitting in that JitB in Weatherford, TX, halfway through a road trip to Houston with my Tech buddies, eating pretty much one of everything on the menu, and thinking I had just reached civilization again.

We have a guy in the club who named his Miata "Mickey" because Disney bought it for him (well, paid him enough money in the lawsuit for him to buy it) after he got food poisoning there. You suck if you don't get an LSX Miata out of this!

Confused. Plus, Fuck Arby's I've been craving Arby's since I got to Germany in September, one of the few fast foods that hasn't made it this way yet. Assholes.

saint_foo 04-13-2010 08:17 AM

Roy Roger's > all (if they were only cheaper).

I recently found that I do really, really like 5 Guys' burgers. If you get the right toppings, it's friggin' brilliant! I had 2 last week (one on Wed, one on Thur). I did notice that one location made it "better" than the other one. So, I guess it's really who's making the burger, the amounts of toppings, etc.

Also, I think Fudd's > 5 Guys > Red Robin > all cheaper quality beef chains

But if I had to go to grade-D beef, I probably would do a Checkers or In-and-Out if they were close by. Arby's roast beef is atrocious, so I can't eat there.

Doppelgänger 04-13-2010 08:31 AM

I've never waten at JITB, I remember the bad cases of undercooked meat from back in the 90's on the news and have always thought about that every time I see them...and will never eat there.

Tried In and Out while out west...not impressed. Yeah, they're everywhere which makes them easy to go to, but quality wasn't anything out of the ordinary. In South Carolina there is a chain called Rush's that is pure win. Here in Atlanta, there is a place called Zesto and they have the best chili cheezeburger I've ever had.

Once in a blue moon, I'll enjoy a Checker's burger and some fries. I love their fries....but I know that food is some of the worst *ish out there....which is why I have one meal about every 2-3 months from there....which is far more frequent than how often I stop at McDonalds.

The laziest most uncaring mother effers work there, but that $1 menu beats the shit out of McDs.

Forgot about Chic-fil-A. Semi healthy fast food, with awesome service. Only place my daughter really eats outside of home. She knows what quality is.

If you post the same thing in every thread on this topic, you should expect people to get annoyed.

EDIT: It's all about menu choices. I recently had a coupon for a McDs salad, and I have to admit it was better than I expected, and surely much healthier than everything else on the menu. Chic-Fil-a grilled breast with just lettuce and tomato is pretty good, and a sensible choice as well.

Regardless of the food we choose to eat, we should not "expect" it to not be properly prepared...

Mmmm. However, the last couple of times in NYC, I didn't get good White Castle. Kinda messed me up. May have been b/c I ate 12 sliders plus fries...but I digress.

BTW, for all you "oh, healthy >>>>> fast food".....yeah, no kidding. However, this thread is for all us fatties, cholesterol-laden arteries, digestive problematic folks. If you don't do fast food, then please refrain.

It is not about menu choices. it's about food source choices and food handling choices.

you can go to a burger joint and get:
grass fed organic beef made from beef from only a few cows, organic veggies, hormone and antibiotic free cheese, fries fried in olive oil

or you can go to a different burger joint and get:
factory beef from hundreds of cows (in one burger) that is lower in omega 3 fatty acids and higher in saturated fat and has a higher probability of E. coli (corn makes cows sick--this is fact) and full of whatever antibiotic du jour the "rancher" has over fed the cow which leads to human antibiotic resistance, veggies with pesticides and less nutrients from over farmed and over fertilized soil (the extra fertilizer runs off into the watershed and causes algae blooms which leads to widespread death of aquatic life) and cheese with more hormones than a post-menopausal mom and flavor created as some scientists lab experiment and fries fried in whatever oil is cheap.

we all love fast food. I still eat at mcdonalds once in a while. But I know what I'm eating (well, not really) and I weigh that risk when I place the order. people in general are very ignorant about what they put into their mouths. most of this stuff we eat is not food. it's high profit margin manufactured products that have a familiar flavor.

and McDonalds has no responsibility to properly prepare food other than meeting FDA minimum guidelines (which aren't necessarily "good practices" in most cases). I still can't believe places advertise "100% beef" is in their burgers. What the fuck else would be in there?

y8s 04-13-2010 11:37 AM

Dood I love fast food.

I just eat at fast food places with quality stuff. Elevation Burger, Chipotle.... oh and if you've heard, even Arby's is now offering grass fed beef in Richmond as a test. If it was doing it up here, I'd be cramming a beef and cheddar down my throat.

I shed no tears for you, but I'm sure we can work something out. You ship me some of that Westvleteren, and I will ship you some roast beef sammiches. Not sure if I can guarantee freshness though. :D

I recently tried a 5 Guys burger. Shitload of fries and the fries were good. The burger wasn't too bad but was a touch on the greasy side. It was in the Tyson's mall food court though, maybe other locations are better.

In Colorado they had this chain called Good Times. In high school we'd sometimes go there on our lunch break. Their burgers were adequate, but the seasoned curly fries were what I really liked.

Between McD's, BK and Wendy's, I'm going to Wendy's. One is just as bad for you as the others, but Wendy's tastes better.

budget racer 04-13-2010 11:55 AM

Turbo_4 04-13-2010 11:58 AM

I hate jack n the crack. I can't remember the last time I DIDNT get the gurgles from eating there.

Doppelgänger 04-13-2010 12:07 PM

I eat very little beef...burgers are a treat for me. 95% of the time I get "fast food" it's going to be something of chicken content.
I <3 Arby's...chicken. Rarely do I get anything roast beef related.

More places need to serve chicken salad though. Anyone like Which-Wich? That *ish is bomb! I have not been to 5 Guys or Red Robin in like 5-6 months+. I usually grab a nice fresh eggsalad sandwich from the cafe in my building for lunch, eat lots of pasta at home, go out for mexican pretty regularly and really like some of the pizza joints around here.

Sparetire 04-13-2010 12:11 PM

I'm with Y8s on this. Fuck fast food.

Local restaurants around here will get you a real burger that actually fills you up, fries that dont suck, cute chicks in the vicinity, a game on TV, and a beer for about 20 bucks, and that incudes a decent tip. Skip the beer and you can walk for a good bit less. Shoot even a draft special will save some cash. Or spend about half that to experience:

Spending as much time standing in line or parked in the drive-through as you would in a small restaurant, just with far less pleasant scenery to look at. I dont like back hair and wannagees competing for visual real-estate.

Better yet, learn to cook. Last night I had a steak that I had marinated with salt, pepper, garlic, and worstershire sauce all day, some home fries, some brocoli, and a beer. Cost me about 5 bucks. It was from one cow, it tasted awesome, and I got to watch 24 while I ate it. I also have another steak (it was a 2 pack for about 4 bucks) marinating right now and I think I'll do a baddass sandwich with it and sauteed onions. I have not had food poisoning in years.

I don't think so. Not the same menu, and not the same food quality. Jacks kicks ass and is cheap. Used to get breakfast there nearly every morning, since they were the only thing open that early typically. Get 2 steak biscuits for like ~$1.

Good points and I agree with most of it, especially the overuse of antibiotics.

My issue was with you saying anyone deserved to get sick, and I wasn't going all the way back to the cow on the food prep issue. Simply put, they should cook your meal all the way through, in a cleanly environment, regardless of which factory the patty came from.

That said, I have real issues with subsidized fast food, artificial food costs, and the production methods that come into play in this system. I also generally support local establishments (like our Super Burger) that still use fresh ingredients. Fast food is good for one thing, when you really really do need food fast (and close to campus).

Didn't Mrs. Navy get sick from chicken anyways?

thagr81 us 04-14-2010 08:52 AM

Spicy Chicken IIRC... Sorry to hear that she is still sick though Sam. :(

sixshooter 04-14-2010 11:20 AM

That sucks, Sam. Best wishes on recovery. I was hospitalized once for food poisoning. Not fun.

For good food fast, I'm eating at Moe's Southwest grill. Steak Homewrecker all the way for the WIN. All fresh veggies and ingredients. It's got sliced marinated steak, black beans, rice, lettuce, tomato salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, and more, all wrapped into a football sized burrito. Sooo healthy for fast food and sooo good! I can barely finish it and then I need a nap.

In a pinch I'll take Arby's Turkey Bacon Ranch, or Chick-fil-A as an old favorite and less healthy backup.

But if you have never tried a patty melt from Waffle House, you haven't lived. And if you have one too often you will die.

I have enjoyed subjecting myself to the substandard tasting crap that comes from Krystal's on occasion. It ALWAYS brings me pain, but I still do it once or twice a year. Sometimes it is very great pain. I'm a very slow learner.

OK he didn't deserve to get sick (I actually said "expect to get sick"), but everyone should be aware of the risk of eating at that type of establishment.

As far as cooking food through, the better the meat, the less you need to cook it through because there's a smaller liklihood of contamination. For an everytown USA grocery store ground beef burger, yeah I'd cook through. ground meat surface area = home for bacteria inside the burger. but for a grass fed local steak, I'd eat it red and not worry. Most of the badness is on the outside.

Generally speaking, I stop cooking our locally raised / farmer's market pork and chicken about 5 or so degrees below USDA recommendation temp and let it coast up to there.

I wont get into what "fresh" and "natural" mean...

You sir have never been to The Beacon (http://www.beacondrivein.com/), where you can actually order extra grease on your food. And yes, even if you eat there once, you can still die.

in retrospect (and less flippantly) it probably should be "would not be surprised if", but whatever. calculated risks.

I would be interested in this...
they mean nothing.

well almost nothing.
"natural" means something to the effect of "minimally processed and raised/grown for human consumption".

"fresh" can mean "never frozen below 26 degrees" or even "not heated", but it isn't necessarily linked to the elapsed time between harvest and consumption.

some labels do mean something relevant.
if you see "USDA Organic" then it complies with the USDA's guidelines for organic production (which vary from product to product). generally it prohibits use of antibiotics, GMOs, animal by product as feed, hormones, pesticides, etc.

"grass fed" is similar. animal must have access to grass and get most of its nutrients from grass.

...

did I mention my fiancee works on food production issues?

edit: she's actually on capitol hill today at a panel discussion about antibiotics use. recent tweets from her:

"most of the 9 billion US food animals are given antibiotics regularly, when they are HEALTHY"

"According to federal testing, 80% of US meat/poultry is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria"

"Study shows 23% of pigs on a conventional farm carry MRSA vs 0% on organic."

(MRSA is Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or basically untreatable bacterial infections. ie you get one and you hope you recover on your own without kicking the bucket)
