Default Got Hit Today! Damn bad drivers and the death of a nice car!

Man what a screwed day!!!

The Good:

Okay so I have spent the past 3 weeks swapping my automatic for a new MSM 6 Speed and doing a bunch of upgrades while in there... As my luck would have it, I got my driveshaft on Monday morning and installed it Monday night. Got to drive my newly transmissioned Miata for the first time ever. It was sooooo damn great; everything I wanted in the car. SPEC stage III clutch was sweet... 6 gears going forward as opposed to the automatic's 3.5 gears. Pure joy! Got to drive the car for an hour before going to bed.

The ugly:

Anyhow got up this morning with the burning desire to drive my car; so my wife was gonna be my victim of a random act of kindness! I'll drive her to the metro and break in my new setup at the same time! Cool idea... but really, really bad outcome.

The Bad:

So I am on I270 in the right lane and some dumbass in a minivan decides to stop dead in the right lane and attempt to cut over several lanes all going the same place. My wife and I are putting along at 30 MPH in the right lane and see the minivan make this sudden stop; so I hit the brakes, shoot right towards the shoulder and think we avoided the mess... Nope, not our luck! Just as I am getting ready to cut my wheels back to the left and re-join traffic... WHAM and then WHAM! A few explitives later and a lot of anger boiling from my fingers... I come to a stop. Damn lady behind me in traffic decided to plow us at ~20 MPH and shoot us off the road and into a concrete wall!!!!

Okay, now I'm pissed and my wife is hurting... we get out to see what happened and another person hits the lady that hit us! WTF Montgomery County? Is it that hard to drive!!!!!

An ambulance ride for my wife and 8 X-rays for me and we're written off with no fractures thankfully; but quite a bit of seateblt rash on my neck and bruises in strange places. Car is likely a total loss... could not drive it home since the front passenger wheel is hitting the inner fender liner and is a long way off from the appropiate alignment. All body parts on the right side were damaged by the concrete wall, rear is screwed, hood is gone, and the chassis is screwed... :( :(

I only got to drive this thing for a shave over an hour after building it!!! WTF, I hate my wife getting hurt... I hate bad drivers and I hate being sore... oh, and I hate the fact my car will never be enjoyed after 3 weeks of work and thousands of $$$ spent on upgrades...

Sucks to hear, but at least it looks fixable. Seems like something that would happen to me.

Wow that is really shitty.

How much will insurance cover? I assume you can take all the fun parts off that and bolt them onto a replacement, but my limited experience with insurance companies tells me they may try to call hitting the concrete wall your fault.

I would cut a bitch.

Yeah the car sucks but at least your wife is ok.

BTW, you may want to change the order in which you complain about those things. I suggest "I hate my wife getting hurt, I hate the fact my car will never be enjoyed after 3 weeks of work and thousands of $$$ spent on upgrades, I hate bad drivers and I hate being sore."

Point taken! I will change the wording cuz the wife will beat me silly for not putting her 1st place. Love that girl but she does carry a big stick!

Cheers,
Prospero

The people that hit me are checking out their car... Ohh, I so badly want to add captions!!!

You can sorta see the extent of the damage from here... the front wheels are all out of canter. The driver's side wheel is cambered by ~15 degrees and still aims straight with the steering wheel. Left side is toed out by several inches and is cambered out like mad.

Glad you two are OK.

Car doesn't look all that bad. I take it you'll be in touch with her insurance company soon?

Damn that sucks and as a local I sympathize with you :( Good luck and hopefully you can get that buffed out proper. BTW if it's totalled and you do a buyback there's a good miata shop -- york automotive mt airy md off I-70. Ed over there may be able to help you get the car in driveable shape again for minimal $.

Hey everyone! Thanks soooo much for the well wishes... it's better than the drugs perscribed by the ER.

My wife and I have no major injuries other than our love for the car. Insurance company sent an adjuster and he felt confident that the car is a total loss... too much chassis damage and also the fact he'll have to nearly repaint the entire car! The only things that will not be directly impacted from today's hit would be the driver's door and trunk lid. The rest of the goodies all will need to be blended. Good for me in a way.

Anyhow, I'll get some better shots tomorrow and hope for the best. If anybody has a line on an 01-05 NB in red, yellow, or orange... I'm gonna be in the market.

Cheers,
Prospero

Get your parts back before the car gets claimed by the insurance folks and goes bye bye.

I'm glad you weren't hurt, either.

rear is fixable. front - get tubular subframe and new suspension and you are all good. might as well do v8 swap while at it

Well, the car was deemed totalled by the insurance company today. After the dealer inspected the chassis and found that both A arms are bent, break line was broken, swaybar was bent, shock was bent...and more... they said it was over $6k in damage before really even tearing into it. Bad news but good news at the same time.

So, all said the car is going to be sold as scrap once I pull my turbo goodies out.

Also, on the bright side, we now have a new car!!!!

Since my long term plan for Trixie (the black miata) was to paint her orange or yellow and convert the body to the newer 2001 style, I was going to part with some solid $$$ to repaint and refresh my car. Anyhow, in light of the accident I knew that she was not ever going to be right again. So rather than beat this poor girl to death it would just be better to start fresh. So out with the old (and loved) and in with the new (and loved)... Please meet Sandra, our lovely 2002 SE!

I started the search the evening of the wreck...sorta following the notion that Trixie was gone; and found this darling. She only has 56k miles and was in perfect shape... ready for the turbo and mods! Wife loves the color and we feel safer since you have to be blind as *** to hit a friggin yellow car!!!

So I guess all things work out one way or another. I'm bound to another few weeks of work in the garage which is a blessing in a way... it keeps me out of trouble

Nice job on the replacement! I didn't want to jump in earlier as the death of a car can be painful, and it would be rude, but now that it has been replaced, I could really use the taillights. My black car has a driver's tail broken.

Anyway. Congrats on the 02SE..as I also have one.. but in Ti. Dimp the leather for some cloth.. you will hate the black leather. Or if you're buying back your car, toss the seats in it (given they are in nice condition) and throw the leathers in the attic. But now you have a car with some good stock parts... 6spd, 3.9 diff, pretty decent chassis bracing, the big sport brakes, the nicer heads/tails and even the BOSE isn't all that bad (i have an auxmod for my mp3 player and use the EQ on it to make the Bose sound 200% better).

I dare you to get a custom tag that says NANERPUS.
