I'm not following up that end. I did file a police report the night of the accident. I'm wondering if that is why his insurance couldn't find him for a while. Maybe he was a "resident" of the county.

I thought a hit and run was a pretty serious crime -- maybe even a low-level felony.

Anyway, glad it worked out for you.

Leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injury is a third-degree felony, punishable by 2 to 10 years in a state prison. If the injury is not serious, it is a felony punishable by up to one year in a county jail or up to five years in a state prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000.

Hit and run involving damage to an occupied vehicle is a Class C misdemeanor – with a fine of up to $500 – if the damage to all vehicles is less than $200, and it is a Class B misdemeanor, up to six months in a county jail, if the damage is more than $200. The same penalties apply for hitting a parked car and leaving and for damaging fixtures, or landscaping without stopping or reporting.

Good luck getting the police to actually do something about it.

Check this out.. It's the middle of a January blizzard and you're driving 35mph down the interstate with ~100 meter visibility. Suddenly you strike a dark object and it quickly disappears from your view, and after stopping to inspect the damage and figure out what the ---- you just hit, NOTHING is found except some minor cosmetic blemishes to the car. Continue driving to work and phone the country Sheriff and they'll charge you with leaving the scene of an accident, a Class C misdemeanor because some meth addict was walking across the interstate in a blizzard then vanished into thin air after you hit her. Ask me how I know this.
