Got screwed over

On thursday I found an ad for a terrific NB for sale.
I found the car while at work, and one of the things I do is find cars that I want the company to purchase, and if possible, we get it and part it out. I showed the ad to my boss, and he told me since I liked it so much, I should have first crack at it for myself personally. And if I wasn't going to buy it for myself, then the company would buy it. I fell in love with the car and decided that if it checked out, I'd buy it and turbo it. And if it wasn't exactly what I wanted, then the company would buy it and we'd part it.

The owner of the car lived about halfway between where I work and where I live, and right off the interstate. The car was a red 99 with AP1. Possibly a sport, I don't know, she didn't know and didn't have the VIN on her. But it needed a replacement 5 speed (or maybe just a clutch slave??), looked terrific in the pics, and she wanted only $2600. I called her and told her I would come buy the car from her after work. We agreed to meet at 7, and I told her I'd leave her $1000 cash and come back the next day with the balance in cash (damn banks close before I get off work and I think $1k is the daily ATM limit). But as it turns out, I had $1500 in my car that I was supposed to deposit, and so I had enough to go ahead and buy it in full. I called her back and let her know.

About 5pm I showed the ad to a coworker, and told him I was going to buy it that evening. Here's what happened after that, but I didn't find out until this (monday) evening. He went to the back of the shop, called the lady, and offered her $2850 for the car. Again, I had agreed to pay her full asking price of $2600. The seller called me back and said she had a higher bid on the car, and wanted to know if I'd beat it. I declined. And again, I did not know at the time, that it was my "friend" and coworker who had called her.

In the mean time, I had gotten myself worked up about the car. Which was my fault, I should not have excited myself to the level that I did, before the car was in my name. So when I found out that I was "outbid" in an auction that wasn't supposed to take place, I was pretty much crushed. But, I did my best to brush it off. Such is life, right. It did bother me though, and I didn't sleep that night. Not at all.

The next morning (friday) I was screwing around with my dog. I was probably being an asshole to him. And well, the fucker bit me. Right in my face, pretty good. Remember the thread about supergluing wounds up so you don't have to get stitches? Well after bleeding for like 8 or 10 hours, I glued my lip together and the bleeding finally stopped. I was so tired and out of it, I really don't know what happened. The little bastard should not have bitten me, and I can't make any excuses for him, but the sleep deprivation probably contributed to the result.

Had a great Saturday at the Mitty. Got 2 laps on the track. Loved it, and was supposed to go back Sunday for up to 2 hours of time on the track. I got myself ready to go, and decided I'd take a little nap before I went out the door. Ended up sleeping several hours and missed my time. Oh well.

So, back on point. Went to work today. The coworker mentioned above was late today. As is his usual custom. He also took an odd lunch time. I found it strange that I didn't see his truck in the parking lot when I went out for my lunch, but whatever. Then at closing time, he bailed out before me. I wasn't too far behind him though, and I saw him pulling out in the red miata. Now it can't be a coincidence that all the sudden he's in a red early NB with an appearance package and a brand new plate. When he saw me looking at him, he took off in front of another coworker who was leaving, and bailed out to the street as quickly as he could. I stopped the coworker that he cut off, and well, things started to make sense.

I went back in and spoke with the boss. He saw the red miata that morning, and had already figured out what had happened, and said he was waiting for me to see on my own, and he was hoping that it wouldn't be until the end of the day so I could have a night to cool off.

It's not like this guy needed the car. He has his big dually truck, a 1st gen rx7, a 2nd gen rx7, a 3rd gen rx7, and 2 NA 1.8 miatas already.

So right now I'm pretty fucking pissed. The bastard who swiped the car out from under me never at any point said anything to me. So he's a combination of coward and lowlife. I didn't realize that he disrespected me at all, let alone to that degree. I'd probably still been upset had the guy pulled me aside and told me (before I saw the car for myself), but to a much lesser degree. But then it turns out that my other coworkers all already knew too, and nobody wanted to pull me aside to tell me.

Any way, that was my week.

Oh, forgot to mention, my loser brother was driving my Montero. You see, I got a dirt cheap Montero that needed a transmission. My dad put in the trans for me, and it was a good beater truck. I put new tires on it, and the rear end went out. So I left it ad my dad's to dispose of, fix, sell, whatever. I signed the title and left the date and odometer boxes blank. He fixed the diff I suppose, because my brother was caught driving it. He doesn't have a license. So a Sherrif was at my house on Monday.

OK, so that was my week. And this week will probably end with me quitting my job, because I don't want to work with people who disrespect me so.

that sucks. real bad man. kick the dog and knife some tires, you'll feel better (J/K)

supra441979 05-05-2008 09:02 PM

Great deal on the car, but oh well shit happends. Sorry to hear that and you should borrow a monster truck and run over that miata. :giggle:

Ben 05-05-2008 09:05 PM

exactly, it happens. but the line between doing the right thing, and being a total jack hole, was not a fine one in this case. we could have come to an agreement, even if it was simply a coin flip.

IMO, it's a akin to coming home from a business trip to find some guy in bed with your wife, when all your friends knew what was going on but didn't tell you.

i don't know if that's a good comparison, it is only a car after all. still i'd be pissed, not sure what i'd do but i usually come up with the best ideas when i'm drunk:bang:

chriscar 05-05-2008 09:12 PM

That motherfucker. What a piece of shit. And he knows it.

Ben, if you like where you work, don't quit your job over this. That prick showed that he has no conscience, and it'll come back to bite him.

This doesn't have anything to do with him not respecting you, it's about HIM being a loser.

C

MX5-4me 05-05-2008 09:13 PM

That sucks man.. It's shitty as hell.. Your boss is a fool for keeping that guy around. How can he trust him? If he burned you he will burn others as well.

Hire some dudes to break his legs. You would be surprised how cheap you can have that done.

MX5-4me 05-05-2008 09:16 PM

+1

He doesn't even respect himself. Any self respecting person wouldn't do such a thing.

samnavy 05-05-2008 09:20 PM

Doing what I do for a living, you can't go to work with a guy who did you like that dude did without having a talk about it. Having personality conflicts is just part of life, and competition in the workplace generally makes a company (unit/squadron) stronger as the best players will get the ball.
But when you stab your boy in the back over something "personal" that directly affects your work relationship, it's gotta be solved. I'd have no problem calling the guy, going to his house, and trying to figure out what happened over a beer. Maybe there's something going on you don't know about. It seems at face value to be pretty cut-and-dry... that the guy is just a cocksucker looking out for #1 and his response to you will probably be "fuck you if you can't take a joke". But if you don't resolve it, the workplace suffers... and business suffers... and then your boss gets involved and nobody wins.
I'm sure word will get around pretty quick... the guy snaked a car out from under you in a dirty way and HE looks like a shitbag. The fact that he probably doesn't care will just end up making him like more of a mega-douche. But there's a fine line between continuing to allow him to look like a douche, and looking yourself like the guy who "lost" and won't stop whining about it. Walk that line and he'll lose the respect of the shop and karma will make something good happen for you.

dpexp 05-05-2008 09:24 PM

Kick that dick in his ---- !

cueball1 05-05-2008 09:49 PM

Ben,

Talk to the boss again. He know's the situation. Ask how you are supposed to deal with this. Point out you still have to work with the guy. Point out the stress and the bad situation he put you and the whole shop in. Don't go off the deep end, yell, scream, cry, just lay it out as calmly as you can with the boss.

Of course none of this applies if your boss isn't a reasonable person or someone you feel comfortable with.

Sad way to learn a life lesson. Never talk to ANYONE about a screaming good deal until the deal's done. Lousy way to learn that.

Rafa 05-05-2008 09:56 PM

Patience Ben. In Spanish we have a saying: "la venganza es un plato que se sirve mejor frio" (translation: revenge is a plate that is better served cold).

Don't make any hasty decisions you may regret later. Cool heads always prevail. Take your time before deciding

johndoe 05-05-2008 10:03 PM

Don't really have a suggestion but I would be extremely shocked that a coworker would pull something that shady, like beyond words. I don't know how you could work with someone like that without wanting to punch a hole in their face every time you saw them. I'm sure it's going to make work a hell of a lot less fun place to be from now on.

kotomile 05-05-2008 10:05 PM

Damn Ben, that sucks, the entire situation. I dunno about quitting the job though, seems you have a pretty good gig. Maybe kick that guy in the teeth a few times to make yourself feel better.

johndoe 05-05-2008 10:06 PM

Exactly, just wait and in two years set everyone of his cars on fire.

Braineack 05-05-2008 10:12 PM

have hustler e-thug him, hell sell it back to you.

y8s 05-05-2008 10:12 PM

the seller's a loser. the coworker's a loser.

at least you're not out anything on the deal except a little sleep.

the guy who bought the car will always be the guy nobody will trust.

a box of nails from home deep may mayke you feel better. careful not to drop them in the loser's driveway though.

Vashthestampede 05-05-2008 10:31 PM

That sucks man. Sounds like and asshole, fuck him and fuck anyone that wasn't a friend to give you a heads up. I wouldn't quit my job, but I'd quit talking to any of the dickheads that were part of it.

My brother did the same when he was in highschool back in the 80's. Found a chevelle that he really wanted and told his friend about it. His friend cut school early and by the time my bro was ready to get the car it was gone.

Better to keep "one and only" kind of deals to yourself until its official.

Karma's a motherfucker....he'll get his somehow. Probably involving the red 99'...:)

Vash-

Braineack 05-05-2008 10:33 PM

i would devote my life to making his a living hell.

JayL 05-05-2008 10:40 PM

This is what you do. Show up at his house after work, kick his ass in front of his family and neighbors. Then when he's laying on the ground bleeding, go over to his new car and key the shit out of it. After that, kick his dog a couple of times (kicking the dog is optional) and give his wife a kiss on the way out of there. Go to the nearest bar and have a drink.

reddroptop 05-05-2008 11:06 PM

I wouldn't do jack shit right away. I wouldn't quit or complain to the boss either.

It is a salvage yard, correct? Shit like this can get out of hand very quickly and "accidents" can become much more.

Don't speak to the ------, leave him be, everyone will know what he did. Same shit to showing "friends" ebay auctions before they are done. Never ever do it.

In a couple months if you are still pissed, you can do something, that doesn't directly lead back to you. Then you have plausible denialability, not that I am condoning anything illegal in any way, shape or form with this post. :)

lmao, I like this plan

Saml01 05-05-2008 11:16 PM

WOW that is fucked up beyond a doubt.

Thats akin to telling your best friend you are interested in asking a certain girl out and he goes behind your back and asks her first.

Sleep well though, life has a very funny way of working itself out.

patsmx5 05-05-2008 11:24 PM

Drop tiny specs of crushed ceramic from a spark plug below the windshield around the wipers. See what happens. :)

Yea that sucks what happened. I'd wait a couple months and see what happens, then decide if you need revenge.

Stein 05-05-2008 11:40 PM

Damn, that blows. I can't fathom doing that to someone-especially someone that I have to see every day.

magnamx-5 05-06-2008 12:05 AM

damn ben that sucks i can't believe your loyal dog would bite you like that wow.

Fireindc 05-06-2008 03:13 AM

I'd confront that piece of shit. If things got hot id kick his ass. There are some lines you don't cross. He crossed one.

johndoe 05-06-2008 03:18 AM

I'm pretty sure kicking a coworkers ass is a line you don't cross...

yea dont kick. or punch. you touching him is off limits. the bat in your hand however is not YOU touching him,its a bat touching him, and is therefor fair game

elesjuan 05-06-2008 04:28 AM

I'd just hope the things bombs and blows the fuck up on him.

Lesson learned, don't EVER tell anyone else about a good deal until you've got your grubby hands on it.

However, if I was that guys manager or boss, I'd have fired his fucking ass for the complete and blatant disrespect for a fellow employee.

fmowry 05-06-2008 06:22 AM

Not really OT but not Miata related. Go get the dog bite checked out. I broke up a fight between mine and my sisters dog and got bit on the lip and had a puncture under my chin. That shit got infected and took about a month to heal after 14 stitches and a run of antibiotics. You don't think after your dog has licked his balls and his ass, that the bite on your lip is nice and clean, do you? :)

Frank

Atlanta93LE 05-06-2008 06:31 AM

Aha! I knew something was going on with that car...I called and got myself excited about it too, but was told somebody else was coming to pay in full, and I couldn't get there in time to swipe it myself :vash: But damn, I sure would have liked to have had it sniped by Ben...would have made it more the norm :giggle:

Zabac 05-06-2008 09:47 AM

Damn, that sucks, but don't quit, just show everyone that you are better than him...

hustler 05-06-2008 09:52 AM

quit? Why the fuck would you quit?

I just turned over my life into something different in the last few months. If you're thinking about quiting, its a mistake. Sure we're civilized and its the 21st century, but you have to kill or be killed. We don't do it with hands anymore, we do it with neuro-chemical transmission. He deserves your domination, so show him who's boss. It was pretty shady, and he's afraid of you. Wreck him, he deserves it. It will serve as an example for the rest of the world. He corrupted your professional relationship. When a lion is eating an antelope, and another lion cuts in, its a fight to the death. Crush him.

m2cupcar 05-06-2008 10:14 AM

If this guy snagged a car from you, he'd love nothing more than to have you quit you're job over it. Stay there and he'll probably spend most of his working hours suspect to your motives - wondering what you're up to. Outsmart him I say.

y8s 05-06-2008 10:23 AM

walk up to him and tell him he should quit.

then hover around him a lot and stare at him.

but dont do anything. just get into his head.

Zabac 05-06-2008 10:28 AM

what Y8S said...

Toddcod 05-06-2008 10:37 AM

It sucks, but it is just a car. I buy and sell cars all the time as well as you. I used have would of been pissed to the point of jacking him up. But I am now 30yrs old. Something better will come up to piss him off.

The best thing you can do is forget about it. More cars will come around. And don't let the prick ever know about another one. It is just a car. Don't quit your job. That is foolish.

If you let it go. You will shine infront of your boss. And don't think for a second he won't remember what a back stabber he is.
Just make your car better than his.

Mabe get something he really wants. Drive it 2 weeks and make a profit with it. Everyone knows he is acting scared of you anyways.

Do what you want. But I would act like nothing is wronge. Learning when to let things go will be the differance of how far a person makes it in life. Doing something rash will just devastate you and your finances. He or the car isn't worth you have to go to court over.

I cornered him. He wouldn't look at me. He said that since we're not friends, what he did was totally on the up and up. I, of course, begged to differ. He didn't care. So I mentioned to him how proud his recently deceased father would be with how he conducts himself under his family's name. And then I went back to work.

Just start unbolting parts from the car. Start small, like subframe braces, the license plate, etc, and slowly get to larger parts, like the exhaust, body panels. Don't steal the parts, just leave them under the car or behind it.

I did ask him why he didn't say anything at all to me. I mean hell, we could have flipped a coin and he could have gotten the car at a lower price by not bidding against me. His response was that "it's too bad I was too poor to outbid him," and that "he's a successful business man, and it's business." That was followed by "we're not friends, I wouldn't have done that to a friend." Dick wad. He's 10 feet from me right now, and I'd really like to walk over and punch him in the balls. I'm still that angry. I'm usually pretty easy going, but I'm having a lot of trouble letting this one go.
