I got a garmin nuvi on sale at Wal Mart years ago. Paid 160 since it was on sale. Still very happy with it.

 

I just bought a Garmin Nuvi 760 "factory refurbished" on Amazon for $199 which is a stellar deal.

 

Refurbed Tom Tom One 130 FTW. Bought one two weeks ago and used it at the Deals Gap all weekend. Liked it so much we bought the second one a few minutes ago. Paid $59 for each. One was free shipping one was $2 shipping. I think the age of the map is a crap shoot (depends on what was loaded when it was sent back to the factory). Doesn't really matter to me since all maps are obsolete about 5 seconds after the unit goes into the box.

 

+1 for Garmin Nuvi, forget the model number my wife got me. Never thought I'd use it and now I love it. Makes it hella easy to pick up parts I've found on CL (and get there first).

Base model is great, but watch discounted models (like my Black Friday edition) which often have outdated maps. Traffic isn't a big deal, even in Houston I don't think the GPS could have saved me once in the year I've had it.

EDIT: My brother also uses a Garmin Nuvi on his motorcycle. His is a few steps up, and we both swear by them.

I am looking for a small, landscape oriented GPS to use as a timing/speed indicator only. I don't need full color, loadable maps, voice, road closures, etc.; just a basic GPS I can build a bracket around and temporarily mount to the driver-side visor plate.

I have a Garmin Nuvi, what I had before was a Garmin Street Pilot. The thing I miss most is being able to "plan" the route. The Nuvi needs the start and end points and it tells you how to get there. The Street Pilot would let you set waypoints along the way to make it go through the area you want to use.

 

Garmin etrex is a handheld that is used for hiking. I can't imagine that you can't pick one up used for $50.

The eTrex is the right form factor, but is portrait vs landscape. The Nuvi and TomTom are a bit large to mount from the visor bracket without becoming a hazard...

We just got back from a week long trip with three other cars. Three of us had Garmins, and one had Magellan. The Magellan was wrong more than it was right. I was using the Garmin 750, which has been replaced with the 760. You can find that model for about 300. They make cheaper ones, just decide on what options you want.
