Headlight modifications to become legal?

http://www.sema.org/Main/ArticleDeta...ontentID=58714

So it seems like rules are softer now concerning lighting...

elesjuan 12-06-2007 03:29 PM

So does that mean my retarded bright ass molested HID lights are going to be legal soon? :D

UrbanSoot 12-06-2007 03:31 PM

seems like

miataz 12-06-2007 03:47 PM

why are HID illegal in the states? because here there not, some old fucker came out and said turn your lights down because they were to bright and there 10,000k aha we flashed are high beems and we said get back in the car before we kick your ass and he got back in it was like some 70 year old:rofl:

SamS 12-06-2007 03:49 PM

10,000K means they're blue (and perform worse than white lights), it doesn't mean they're really bright. Most retrofitted diy HID setups aren't aimed well and produce a lot of glare, which could anger other drivers.

HID lights aren't illegal. My Mazdaspeed6 came with them. The Retrofit kits are supposedly illegal when they're installed in non-projector enclosures without a horizontal cutoff. Which, I don't care about. :D

SamS 12-06-2007 03:59 PM

Correct, OEM HID setups are obviously legal. That's why I commented about 10000K diy retrofitted HID's. OEMs typically use 4000K-5000K lights, the best range for visibilty.

UrbanSoot 12-06-2007 04:05 PM

thats what my z has. works very well.

spike 12-06-2007 04:25 PM

Aftermarket HID lights are not illegal if they are DOT approved.

elesjuan 12-06-2007 04:33 PM

I bought 6000ks for the Miata in the crappy ebay junk 7" "projectors." They put out an unbelievable amount of light yet oddly I rarely get flashed by someone.

Had them for 2 years before a cop finally stopped me about them. Was getting onto a highway behind him and there were no lights around at all. The entire inside of his car was just GLOWING whiteish blue then came the mirror adjust.. lol. I followed him down to the first exit, got off, I moved into the left lane and he got into the right, turned into a parking lot then turned around to follow me. I went through a drive through window and he pulled up next to me in the parking lot... Was trying to order and he was trying to talk to me. Asked if there was something wrong with my lights or something.. Told him the headlight housings were crappy and had some new ones on order, he was like "okay just wanted to check for future reference.. I had to adjust my mirror they were so bright." I'm thinking, "wow, you had to adjust your mirror?! OMG."

I look at it this way... During the middle of the day nobody seems able to see my bright ass red car... So do you think at night even with headlights anyone can see it? They sure can see me now. :)

Might add my Speed6 is the only vehicle I have that has DOT approved HID lighting. All my cars and bike have HID lights installed. The bike being brightest with a 5500k 100 watt D2S HID system from UnityHID... Its from a super high end teardrop police spotlight.

miataz 12-06-2007 10:35 PM

aha w.e all i know is there bright as fuck w.e blue il get a picture if you want one and i took out the plastic cover underneath the one the just projects the top half now its the whole light so there really blue, get people mad so many times, they have to like cover their mirror.

Bryce 12-06-2007 10:44 PM

Your lights, along with jacked up suvs and trucks that don't re-aim their lights, are what piss me off the most while driving at night.:slap:

miataz 12-06-2007 10:52 PM

aha yup, my buddys the one who has them there in a 4-runner, but he owns automotive warehouse, so he pretty much gets everything for free...so do i sometimes lol:bigtu:

Anything higher than 6000K = dumb and useless.

we were just scaring him so he would go back in his truck, he was tripping out on us, every night now people high beam us its annoying not my fault they cant afford HID's

y8s 12-07-2007 09:15 AM

part of the problem is that there's a loophole concerning wattage.

automobile lighting in the US was limited to 55W for low beams but has no consideration for newer, more efficient technology like HID. for example a 35W Xenon HID setup is probably 3-5X brighter than a typical 55W Halogen.

I dunno if the regulations have been updated (probably) but you can definitely see how a poorly set up HID kit in optics designed for less efficient lamps is going to cause problems.

I'm happy with my VisionPlus +50% halogens for now. for the cost.

You can buy hids on ebay for $100, thats not really expensive.

SamS 12-07-2007 10:16 AM

How does them getting HID's solve the problem of your RicerBlue(TM) HID's blinding other people?
