Help me choose a car...

Ok I need a car for 3-4k, $3500 would be ideal. My dads friend can get me cars at state auctions so a car the is 5k would be 3-4k at the auction.
Things I need in a car are:
Fun to drive
4dr would be ideal but I could do 2dr as long as it as back seats
Leather a plus
Has to look like I'm not poor

Cars that come to mind 2000 BMW 540i, 2001 vw passat, 2000 Saab 9-5.
I'm a new real estate agent and I'm going to be selling houses from $300,000-$1,000,000 so I'm not in the poor area or the rich area, more like middle class so I don't need a Bently.

Let me know what comes to mind

Are you going to be driving clients around?

Get something that is practical and in really good condition, something common that won't kill you when you need to fix it. If you are going to have clients riding in it, get something large with easy access in and out of it. Get a Toyota Camry. Or better yet a domestic.

The one and only real estate agent I dealt with had an older Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Whatever you do...don't get an Xterra...they're a bitch to get in and out of the back of.

Get salesman to drive YOU around, with you and wife climbing in back to get an idea.

Mercury Grand Marquis comes to mind...not bland like the Crown Vics, but uses the same cheap parts, affordable, comfortable, big and quiet. Consider road noise since you're going to want to make comments to set up each house you show, and will also want to hear what the buyers are whispering in the back.

i got a 03 mazdaspeed protege as a daily for 4k

4dr-check
peppy-check
fun to drive- not to bad actually

I'm in the process of looking at houses. Seems like about 80% of the realtors I see drive full-size Buicks, probably because they have easy access with a comfy back seat, and largely because they're American.
Unfortunately, there are still enough potential buyers who have a chip on their shoulder about foreign cars, and as a salesman you don't want to risk offending a customer even if he really deserves it. Especially in a shitty market.

The realtor I've been using drives a 10-yr-old Park Avenue for work. His driver the rest of the time is a Mustang GT.

Anyway, I'd just suck it up, buy something cheap, presentable and American, and forget about fun-to-drive. Grand Marquis is a good choice if you can find one.

Volvo's Not high class, not stupid to maintain. Very COMFORTABLE Parts are rather cheap. Lots of online support for repairs. Turbos can be very fun. Can find turbo with manual trans if lucky.

850 1994-1997 volvos 1000-2900$
s70 v70 1998 - 2000 sedan and wagon 2000-4000

thre are plus and minus to all the models, Once you get out of 2000 the cars do get complicated with their ETC throttle bodies, but not too hard to maintain.

Goodluck

I always liked the e39 5 series....It also be a nice car to drive clients around while still being modest...

kotomile 01-22-2010 05:22 PM

I think the German cars would send the wrong message. You don't want someone to see your car and think you might be a bit too good at what you do. Keep it sensible and, preferably, domestic.

Some clients bring families too. A minivan isn't a bad idea.

NA6C-Guy 01-22-2010 05:22 PM

Older BMW, too many years and models in the price range to list any one.

miataspeed2005 01-22-2010 05:39 PM

I wanna look like I have a head on my shoulders and not some young 23yr old that's immature. I can't do the minivan that's just too much

gospeed81 01-22-2010 05:43 PM

What about an oldskool CRV?

Great all around, cheap, responsible, dependable, big, good on gas.

2001 HONDA CR-V,runs good a/c, clean title

I want a car, I drive the mdx all the time and I hate it

rharris19 01-22-2010 07:05 PM

E30? An older odyssey would be pretty sweet

Cspence 01-22-2010 07:28 PM

In my eyes you really need to pick a car that sends the right message. If you get something that screams "I'm makin too much money" I know I might be weary of having you as my agent for the mere fact that you might not do best by me. On the other hand, if you get a POS, I'd think your a broke ass no good real estate agent....I mean why else would you drive a shit box. :giggle:

NA6C-Guy 01-22-2010 07:34 PM

So we agree then... an early 90's BMW 5 series. Shows class and that you are at least good at what you do, but it's not a piece of shit so that they think you don't know what you are doing. Plus, nobody thinks a 20 year old BMW is "high end". Man, he drives a '93 BMW 5 series, he must be loaded!
