Hey audiophiles, ? about todays Woot.

I would really like to get some surround sound going in my house. But I dont know much about recievers. From what I understand, with all the inputs this has, I can hook all my stuff into this, and then have 1 HDMI output to my tv and be done. Is that correct? Right now I have a Wii through component, xbox360s though composite, and cableboxDVR though HDMI to my tv.

Yes. Same as my Onkyo. I have the cable box, xbox 360 and apple tv hooked into the receiver via HDMI with one cable into my tv's input 1. Change the receiver to either cbl/sat, dvd or aux and it will do the work for you.

I'm actually thinking about picking up the newest version of my Onkyo 7.1 because it comes wifi ready, can be controlled via iphone and stream directly from pandora.

Its the jealousy talking, that sounds pretty badass. Can you control it from Android too or just iOs?

Not sure, but it only talked about itouch/iphone capability.

I know you can hook it up to your PC through the network, so I'm sure there's a way (or will be soon) to use Android as well.

Here's the one I think it is. I was reading about it in the new crutchfield and don't have it here with me.

Definitely miles from my price range lol. For a fairly basic home theater setup is the woot one any good?

I have no personal experience with Pioneer, but I would go off this if I was considering it for myself.

http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-VSX-52...owViewpoints=1

Spec wise it looks like it has good features and power output, but I would still go off the reviews.

The Onkyo I linked before is the 7.2 model. Here's the same type of receiver, only 5.1 like you want.

You already have the speakers I take it?

Efini~FC3S 09-30-2011 09:50 AM

I really like my onkyo 7.1 set-up. Very good value. Obviously not super high-end but it seems to be about the best you can get for $400-700.

I need to go through and set mine up again. My puppy chewed through one of the speaker wires so it's been on ~6.1 for a while...

You're looking for HDMI transcoding and scaling. The description reads as if it does HDMI switching only, which agrees with the price tag. So no, I does not look like it does what you want. It's also only 5.1, which is kinda lame.

Yeah I forgot to mention that part. Like with my system (cause its a few years old), its only considered a HDMI switch so I still have to run the audio with optical cables. Like Ben said though, for that price range that's what you can expect to see nowadays.

So In order to do everything with one HDMI output I would need to connect stuff to the receiver with an HDMI?

y8s 09-30-2011 10:25 AM

I just got a new TV literally two days ago. It's my first TV in 10 years and I was switching component video through my nearly-ten-year-old Denon up til two days ago. Now I have 2 HDMI (PS3, TiVo HD) and one component (receiver which switches DVD and nothing now) and MY GOD the input switching on the TV is balls slow.

Not to mention that since I use a Harmony remote, I have to set the power-on delay to like 20 seconds with the new TV.

but the TV is beautiful. and way lighter than the 176 lb CRT I had.

believe me, the first thing I thought was "oh shit, new tech is gonna make me need all new components now!"

Typically yes.

Most receivers do not convert between video formats, they just switch within them.

Do your Wii and Xbox not have HDMI outputs?

Its possible to get HDMI cables for them, I just dont own them. No reason to unless I get a receiver that has multiple HDMI inputs. My TV only has 2 or 3.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you not asking about a receiver that has 4 HDMI inputs?

(Imagine the following being read in a kindergarten teacher's voice)

Darren has three HDMI-enabled devices, and a receiver with four HDMI inputs. If Darren plugs all of his HDMI-enabled devices into his receiver, how many open HDMI ports will be left?

wtf this was $199 this morning, now its $250... BOOOOO

matthewdesigns 09-30-2011 02:56 PM

I don't want to turn this into a debate about "audiophile vs consumer" goods, but consider the price of this Pioneer, or even the H-K receiver, and how much stuff is packed into it. Sound quality is going to suffer hugely, amplifiers are going to be pretty anemic, D/A converters are going to be bottom shelf, ect. If I were you I'd save a few more months and get something you'll be happy with from longevity and audio quality standpoints.

Just my .02
