How much is torsen+carrier worth?

There is a guy local to me that has a torsen with the carrier he is willing to sell. He wants $400 and my open with carrier in trade. That sounds steep to me.
What are torsen's worth, just the diffrential and carrier assembly? No rear end housing, drive shaft, axles or any of it.

Zabac 09-17-2007 04:00 PM

not sure, whatever people will pay for them, they are very pricey...i've heared people paying 700-800...insane

Al Hounos 09-17-2007 04:05 PM

yeah, they go for a lot. just remember there is also the RX-7 option.

firedog25 09-17-2007 04:11 PM

Planet Miata salvages them off eBay and sells them for $700+.

For the diff alone.

cjernigan 09-17-2007 04:13 PM

Sounds like a deal then and i can just go pick it up. Just have to hide it from the g/f.

firedog25 09-17-2007 05:05 PM

Girlfriend?

Unless you're mooching off of her dime then I'd have to say what you spend your money on is your business.

Wife? That's a whole other story.

cjernigan 09-17-2007 05:07 PM

She act's like she's my wife. It's not the money, it's the time I spend working on the car she cares about. The more upgrades i do, the more time i spend away from her. Not that I'm trying to spend any time away from her, it just works out that way.

I truthfully think the only reason she cares is because she doesn't know how to drive a manual tranny car so she can't drive the miata. Not that I would let her to begin with..

Train her to fetch tools...then it'll be quality time, LOL

cjernigan 09-17-2007 05:20 PM

It's hard to work on anything when it takes her 10 minutes to find a 10mm wrench.

Zabac 09-17-2007 05:33 PM

dude, no way...i couldnt put this any better in my own words...this is my exact problem..."oh you bought this? i guess i will be spending time alone again" you bought what? i guess ill stay home again" yadda yadda yadda, lol
she doesnt know what a socket is? let alone what 10mm socket is...she dont know what a mm is...wtf
and she wants me to teach her how to drive stick, haha, i told when i buy another car...

cjernigan 09-17-2007 05:38 PM

I have tought her how to drive stick on my ranger, it's standard and it went alright. She drove us into a ditch and almost hit a telephone poll in reverse but hey that's how it goes.

IS THIS A GOOD DEAL? I just talked to the guy and he said I can come pick it up whenever. So yeah I am putting my rear in as part of a trade and $400 for a carrier and torsen 1 out of a '94. No idea what they cost otherwise like this. I also will get a 4.10 instead of a 4.3 out of the deal which is nice.

jayc72 09-17-2007 05:43 PM

It's a decent deal. You are in effect paying $400 for JUST the torsen diff since you are swapping everything. It isn't a steal for sure, but considering the labour needed to do just the diff swap it makes sense to go about it the way you are.

Ben 09-17-2007 05:47 PM

94 is a TorsenI
Some will aruge that you really want a TorsenII, and the TI has less value

$400 seems to be on the average-to-high price for a TII, but in effect you'd be buying a little lower R&P and saving yourself from having to install.

I'd probably look out for an RX7 LSD and 3.9 R&P which should come to $400 or so together, but be more work.

jayc72 09-17-2007 05:50 PM

If you go with an RX7 diff you'll still have to factor in the cost to rebuild it. Or you should.

hustler 09-17-2007 05:56 PM

Fuck that. I gave $350 for an open rear end with axles, drive shaft, 1.8 rear brakes still attached, and a loose torsen and carrier.

Pics of said girlfriend's tittays?

cjernigan 09-17-2007 05:56 PM

Guess I'll give it the go ahead then. I've looked for some RX7 lsds and they don't pop up cheap often enough for me, plus I would have to rebuild it for the peace of mind and then reset the backlash and all that mess.
So yeah, i pay a little for the convenience of being able to unbolt it in the car and bolting the other one right back in. Should work out alright and it's something I've never done before.

cjernigan 09-17-2007 05:57 PM

Damn hustler sounds like you made out good. Can you throw another deal my way?

Ben 09-17-2007 06:00 PM

Sounds like a plan man

so.... uhm how bout those pics then ? :)

cjernigan 09-17-2007 06:03 PM

Man i can't even get pics of the titties for myself. She does happen to live just down the way though. Hmm wonder what I do have on file though, probably nothing good.
