FWIW, I've become a fan of 'TX Whiskey'. Tastes great and goes down easy with a few ice cubes.

Serious observation:

If you're lying in the cardiac ICU, and you still send your husband out to bring back dinner from Pizza hut, you are never going to get any better.

Lol.

If you are bored and have a HULU account, stream the documentary "Muscle Shoals". It is about some of the most iconic American music being created.

^ hulu usually has "x months free" taster offers for the Joe Perezes out there.

Late to the whisk[e]y party. I love straight rye. neat. Sometimes a manhattan.

I also like straight white tequila neat. Sometimes a margarita.

it's OK if you don't. my oldest son doens't like chocolate. my youngest does. TBD which one will drink straight rye with me in 20 years.

You rarely see anyone in a bar order a drink of any kind of distilled spirits (excepting brandy (and when was the last time you saw anyone order brandy in a bar?)) and drink it neat. Well, maybe some liqueurs, but they are usually much sweeter and have a far lower alcohol content. And I can't say I've seen many people order liqueurs straight up, either. But except for shots, it's pretty rare to see someone sipping a glass of pure vodka, gin or rum. They're almost always consumed in a particular well known recipe. Vodka martini. Gin & tonic. Rum and coke. You get the idea. There are multiple variations and combinations, but the old standbys have to account for the vast majority of the drinks consumed. Not sure of the rest of the world, but this seems to be pretty common in all the English speaking places I've been.

Then you take whiskey. Or whisky, if you like your single malts. I tried a bunch, and I have to say that a lot of them are pretty nasty. "Hints of smoke and peat". More like hints of old sock and dirt. Mix one up with some ginger ale, and bob's your uncle, as they say across the pond. Except that even adding water is a mortal sin to some. God forbid you like your drink chilled, as I'm sure there are places in the UK where that will get you stabbed repeatedly. Yes, I learned all about proper tasting, including warming the poison in my hands first (it does bring out different smells), and swirling it around in the glass, etc. Still tasted like turpentine.

Add a decent mixer, and I'll drink almost any alcohol, but I really don't like the taste of whiskey well enough on it's own to bother. Rather have a bad beer than some of the "top shelf" stuff I tasted in Scotland. Yet here I am, sitting at the computer on my 3rd or 4th whiskey mixed with some very bad store brand ginger ale. I wouldn't drink either by themselves, but together they make a delightful combination that goes down easily.

Guess I'm just a heathen.

In other words, the expensive stuff isn't all that good for beginners. Try Jack Daniels neat. Or Woodford Reserve. Or Makers Mark.

If still not your thing, try some different rums, again, neat. The Kraken is a little too sweet for me, but might be a good into to spiced rums. Ditto Sailor Jerry.

I'm going to give you a pass because you're in the hospital. JD and Woodford, in the same sentence? Comparing the two? You must be on the good stuff.

Genuine not snobby question, what do you guys prefer about the non-aged Tequila vs a Respado or Anejo or Extra Anejo?

While I haven't tried anything other than blanco in over a decade, I do remember the other tequila styles reminding me of drinking liquid ashtray.

Not comparing them as equals, just acknowledging that different people like different stuff.

Take my step father. He's from Tennessee, a JD man, and will look down his nose at anyone drinking Jim Beam or Even Williams. Now, I've given him a lot of good stuff over the years, and while he's acknowledged most of it as decent, he still prefers his JD.

I'm ok with that. And I understand that it's very mellow and slightly sweet in a way that might appeal to someone who doesn't think they like whiskey neat (or even on the rocks) as an entry-level bottle.

I mean, I haven't always injected Macallan 18 directly into tongue with an insulin needle. It took a while to build up that appreciation.

At some point in time JD changed from 86 proof to 80 proof. The taste shifted to burnt brown sugar and I stopped drinking it.
I have a bottle of 86 proof that I bought December 31st, 2002. My friend got arrested on the way to a party that night and we never drank it.
Not sure why I have been saving it.

My company sponsors a race team. We sponsor Scott Speed through Andretti Autosport in the Red Bull Global Rally Cross series. His car was wrapped with one of our 970RA Shift Effect colors for two double headers in June. He had podium finishes in all 4 races.

after a while all spirits aged in oak tend to taste similar. lots of vanillin and tannins and brown color. for some, the process enhances and mellows the flavors. that's why you get lots of aged scotch that's really sat in barrels a long time.

but I like the raw flavor of unaged, distilled agave. particularly those done in alembic (pot) stills. sixshooter's recommended cheapie Camarena is such a beast.

This is our go-to as well. Has won or came second in all blind taste tests in my household. My favorite is corazon de agave when I know what bottle it comes out of, but more money for sure.

Camarena tequila is pretty good, if you can find it in your area. Check out Z Tequila, a good #2 in choice IMO

Since I live in VA, I can see exactly what's near by and the state run stores don't carry it. That means driving to DC and that's hard. I'm lazy.

Tim: Corazon's only $5 more a bottle here ($25). And it's no longer in the goofy super tall stem so it'll fit on your shelves.

There is a laguna blue NA parked right behind my Mazda2 in my work parking lot. You better bet they got some miataturbo.net stickers, mkturbo.com stickers, and a mkturbo business card on their windshield held down by the wiper blades.

I've been driving a Kia Soul for the past three days. The one with the hip-hop hamsters.

On Saturday evening, it did a stellar job of rolling across the 8 miles of un-paved and washboarded County Line Road that Gmaps thought I might enjoy experiencing at 50+ MPH. (I did not.)

And the air conditioning in this thing works like a champ. Seriously.

And with the GDI engine, it's not horribly slow.

Glad to hear it has some pep. Just confirms my belief that my co-worker is a grandmother trapped in a 40 year old man's skin suit. He even has the manual! BTW, not sure how it is on the driver side but when going over big bumps at an angle I feel like my torso is being tossed side to side risking injury. Same goes for the back seat, those suck for bumps as well.

Forecast for Tuesday, August 8:

110F, with %90 humidity.

And the pool is out of commission this summer.

And, we'll be working under roasting lights on Wednesday.

And, it's reaaallly hot. And damp. Wet even.

A horrible rainstorm comes after these heat waves.
The whole sky exploded a couple weeks ago. We had hail the size of lemons, cars were destroyed. Buildings suffered incredible damage.

Never used to be like this around here.

All this happened in one day:
(You'll see an explosion at around 1:27. That's where we were.)
