I just had the second-most amazing evening...

Last week, I moved to North Carolina. New job. Rented a house out in the 'burbs, at the end of a cul-de-sac.

This evening, as I was pulling into my driveway, a couple of guys were standing around outside the garage of the house next to mine, drinking beer out of cans. I unloaded the groceries, grabbed a beer of my own, went back out, and introduced myself to the neighbors.

This was around 7pm.

We all got to talking.

They pulled a folding table and some chairs out of the garage and set 'em up in the driveway. I went back into my house and brought out some high-quality tequila and bourbon, and some cigars.

Another guy went back to his house and brought back some good cheese and sausage. Then another guy wondered away and came back with two live lobsters. I went back to my place and got butter. A large pot and a Cajun cooker appeared. The lobsters were boiled. We had no crackers, so I went into my garage and came back with a channel-lock pliers. The lobsters were dispatched.

We had about a dozen people at a time at the peak. Folks were coming and going, but a core group of five formed and held down the fort. Two Toms, a Mike, me, and a batshit-crazy guy who calls himself DJ, and apparently rode here from Florida on a 50cc scooter. This guy is Florida Man™ to a tee.

We finally disbanded around 11:30, having agreed that we'll be doing smoked ribs tomorrow evening, apropos of nothing.
And I can't help but think that this must have been what it was like when the Mirabella Bar Association first came into existence 15 years ago, just before I moved to Carlsbad.

I think I like this neighborhood.

I remember growing up we would have block parties. The city would block off certain streets throughout the year between the blocks. Once every 5 or so years our street would come up, all the cars were removed. Tents set up, smokers, BBQs, bounce houses and other stuff for us kids, people had their pools opened, i usually ran street hockey, ect.

See the burbs aren't all THAT bad Joe. :)

What you have described, Joe, is a typical summer evening in my neighborhood. This type of thing (minus the lobster) is pretty common (about once a week) in the nice weather.

Stupid turbo question:

Would a very short exhaust out the front fender (or straight up) after the turbo have any major disadvantages over a proper downpipe and a well configured exhaust system?

Performance is the only concern here.

1.6 OHV L4 engine, 1/8 mile drag race.
2 barrel Weber carburetor.

Can't get a hold of specialty turbo carb. So, should I go with a draw through or pressure chamber setup?

I'm pretty certain asking these questions here would be regarded as seeking expert advice rather than cheating.

I'll disclaim that my knowledge here is mostly from reading & talking with old-timers. I've never turbocharged a carbed vehicle.

A draw-through setup tends to draw oil through the shaft seals on the cold side when the throttle is closed at higher RPMs. A pressure-chamber system solves this, but can be a little finicky about fuel pressure. The FPR needs to be referenced to the inside of the box, or located within the box.

Pressure chamber is far better set up. A draw through design suffers with the problems of fuel droplets impacting the compressor wheel causing erosion, pooling of fuel in various locations in the piping as the charge cools, especially in the intercooler, and various issues related to the separation of the charge air and the fuel wreaking havoc on mixture. A blow through pressure box design eliminates these concerns.

Just as with fuel injection, a boost referenced fuel pressure regulator is necessary. In the case of a carburetor, they usually operate at 3 to 5 PSI, with some needing as much as 8 to 10. Check your specifications.

As a side note, a draw through carburetor will need to be sized much larger to generate the same CFM as a pressure box mounted unit.

Carburetor icing can also be a problem on draw through units but is not an issue on pressure box arrangements.

I just need to figure out a way to route the throttle linkage.

If you're not a US military or police buff, you probably have never heard of the 1033 Program. It essentially provides a bureaucratic means to transfer excess military grade weapons to local law enforcement agencies. Sure, you may not like local police departments having all types of military gear, such as grenade launchers, helicopters, boats, M14s, M16s, and so on.

And you probably won't like how the agency seemingly doles out the weapons to anybody. All you have to do is apply, create a fake website, and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) will oblige. Law enforcement experience is not required. There doesn't seem to be a requirement that the requesting agency actually be real, either.

Seeking expert opinion once again..

I'd like to use an intercooler for this turbo project.
Don't have one, can't get one. (unpossible with the current storyline)

Two choices:
Use 45mm OD thin walled pipe as side tanks, drill 20mm holes and weld in a bunch of 20mm OD pipes in between to make a crude IC.
Inlet and outlet would be from the top, like a TDR IC.

Or,

Use a radiator.

Either case, I'm spraying water on it. As in, windshield washer tank and pump and nozzles, hooked up straight to the gas pedal.

Please feel free to laugh, but also feel free to share your opinions.

The radiator idea sounds pretty good to me, all else being equal. Much greater surface area, a lot less labor, and it's something that's, you know, actually designed to transfer heat from one fluid to another.

Thank you, Joe.

I have access to a large(ish) truck radiator, and one from a 4 cylinder car.
I'll check them both for internal volume and flow.

And, if I move the dist vac advance from venturi to port vacuum, it'll just retard itself.
I'll need a very simple det hearing device and set the distributor by ear under load.

It's a 57 Hp OHV 1.6. I am expecting maybe 85 - 90 Hp out of it.
