If, instead of figuring out a proper buck/boost regulator, I simply throw a resistor and a zener diode at a circuit for which I need to supply about 40ma at 8 volts-ish, with a supply that's going to be bouncing around from 9-15 volts, does that make me a bad person?

Reverant 09-21-2011 04:08 PM

Not until the user of said power supply burns to a crisp.

Joe Perez 09-21-2011 04:20 PM

40ma at 0-7 volts.

Through a 5 watt zener.

I'm more concerned that some future engineer might see what I have done and that it will bring shame and disgrace upon my family name for generations to come.

In 1989 gas here was $1.03, $1.13, $1.23 per gallon for regular, mid, premium. Ten cents increase per grade.

Today, it’s $4.11, $4.21, $4.31. Still ten cents increase per grade.

As a percentage, the increase per grade is roughly 25% what it used to be.

What the hell? Has the cost of increasing octane gone down stayed the same that much?

Yeah, it's closer to a $0.20 spread here as well.

this is such bullshit, it's widely known that interstate commerce is driven by diesel and this fact is exploited. diesel is fucking trash, it should be no more than a fifth of the average gasoline cost.

scottyd 09-21-2011 09:56 PM

I was paying $4.05 for it. It's crap.

pusha 09-21-2011 09:57 PM

any time it goes over $4, I wince

scottyd 09-21-2011 10:01 PM

One of the greatest things I've ever done to my Miata... for the first time... adjust the turnbuckles on the top latches. Pulling them up tighter makes my minor drip in heavy rain go away, and pulls the side window seals up tighter, for less wind noise. It also cured some of the top rattle when going over harsh broken roads. Why I never did this before...

$150 Gerstner box for $34.95. Not an original USA-made Gerstner, but part of their "International" line (read: Chinese). Still well-made and a good deal.

So I did some work on the concrete biz website a few weeks ago but never actually got time to finish it. Still lots to do before I'll be happy with it.

Just got another email for a job. Thats 2 jobs just by having our name on the internet in one month. One guy owns a modular company, so getting in with him will hopefully give us some year round work as well.

Still, I do this all for free, in hopes that the day will come where this will all pay off.
