I messed up bad...
Hey guys. I was in a pretty bad accident this past Friday and just wanted to put you guys in the know about my current status and condition.
Details: Friday night I was on my way home and crossed the center line at the same in my 2001 A4 as a 1960s model Ford F150. We hit head on on the driverside. He incured a fractured orbital, broken jaw, facial lacerations, and a massive concussion. I on the otherhand was not overly lucky. I broke my right femur in one spot, cracked the joint that connects to my kneecap, on the left side I broke my femur in two spots (one compounded), the hip where femur connects to it broke. I also had a cracked rib on my right side which partially punctured my lung. Also I had a few 1" lacerations on my liver and a partially ruptured spleen. I was admitted to the ER around 11:30PM and laid around in the ICU until 1PM. From there I went into surgery inwhich I spent 9 hours straight. Remained in the ICU until Sunday night. Been in a regular room since. Early predictions by the surgeons is that I'm looking at 2 months before I can pressure on my right leg and 3 months for my left. then rehab starts. Long road but I will survived. Guess my search for the new car got accelearated.... Looks like I'm going to be going with a 00-01 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. |
Damn, dude.
Just damn. Pictures of compound leg fracture? |
Sounds like you should be looking for a 1960's F150.
Heal up. |
Holy shit man! Thats pretty intense. Glad to hear your OK though.
Hospital rooms and surgery sucks, so I def feel for you. Hopefully they give you some nice pain killers you can get hopped up on for a few months while everything heals. :bigtu: |
I'm sorry to hear this. It's really scary when you consider how lucky you were to not be in a Miata when this happened.
How are your genitals? There has never been a time better than now for that penile enlargement you've always needed. |
Ouch. Man that is not cool. Hope you have a cute nurse or two to keep you busy lol
|
Hope you get happy ending with sponge bath. What were yall crossing lines for, at the same time?
|
O_O damn! Get well soon
|
Glad you are still on this side of the grave, good luck with the recovery.

Crumple zones are only good if the other guy has them too. At least it helps.
Glad to hear you're ok. I work in the ICU, sounds like you recovered quickly compared to the injuries you sustained, that's always a good sign. Although I don't deal with much trauma. |
Shit. That absolutely sucks. Hope you are doing as good as possible for the situation.
|
Oh man, that's horrible. At least you're still with us! As much as you're going to be bored out of your mind, don't rush yourself. Make sure you heal properly.
|
Damn man, get better soon.
What made you cross the center line? |
Sounds like he borrowed all of your crumple zones and left you with none. I hope your recovery goes well. Not being able to walk for that long...

Glad to see you survived, you were very lucky. Maybe this will give you a chance to make the Beer of the Day thread a daily event? My best advice, lay off the Ibuprofen...That shit is bad news. My wife's uncle just died like 10 weeks ago from liver failure, and it was because he took too many pain killers. Also, don't get too crazy with the meds. When I wrecked, they prescribed me with vicotin. That was great, but after I was all healed up and I was fine, I had a slight chemical dependence. I got as many refills as I could, and I still took them. The only problem was, I washed them down with Wild Turkey and Cherry Coke, until my ex-fiance caught me, flipped the F out, and flushed all my pills. All in all, I wish you the best of luck and a complete and speedy recovery. |
Glad to hear your alive. Could have been worse if that helps at all. Take care of yourself in recovery. I couldn't take car of my ankle in the military and now have a cane and a limp at 30. Also agree with ^ on the meds. Been there a little too. Best hopes for your recovery man!

Didn't want to dig this one back up, but did want to update everyone... I was released from the hospital yesterday morning around 6AM into the care of my father and step-mother until I am mobile on my own again. Still pretty much stuck in the bed with some wheelchair usage. Most of the paramedics have loved moving me because I only weigh 155 lbs rather than most around here that are 300+. Recovery is going well, but I still have a LONG way to go. To answer a few question from above:
Rick: Not sure if we did cross it or not. It was a narrow road and we came over a hill and hit. This is what we were both charged with after the Troopers investigated the accident. thirdgen: Luckily my lung did not collapse. They were concerned that it would, but the puncture was small enough that it did not. hustler: I asked about the enlargement surgery... Insurance wouldn't cover it. I spent enough on fixing my legs so I opted not to go for it. Maybe next time. |
Glad you're going home at least. I can't imagine you would have been so fortunate in a miata.
|
Have a good Thanksgiving and best of luck during recovery.
|
Glad your home dude! Here's the some good useful info and NSFW forum HERE :giggle:

Good to have you alive, peasant. |
Glad you're heading home, take it easy like they say. I'm just getting over shoulder surgery from a bike accident in the summer and if there is anything to pass along it's don't push your limits when you're healing bones.
|
Haha!!! Thanks for the lolz Gene. |

Op > you're lucky, get well soon. |
Well guys... Physical therapy has come and gone today. Today I was able to stand up for the first time since walking to my car before the accident. Granted this was with help from the therapist getting up and a walker once up, but it is definitely a HUGE step in my recovery progress. I was also able to march in place slightly while standing as well. However it was only about 4" of lift for each foot, but it sure as Hell beats being bed ridden like I was. Just wanted to keep the community updated on my progress as I promised.
Also, I have another appointment with my internal organ injury doctor tomorrow, so expect a report when I find out the results from that. |
Do you need some KY ?
Anything we can do to make your life better besides build a time machine? |
Time machine would be awesome. Doesn't even have to be a DeLoren... I'm not picky at this point.
|
Small world.... I heard about you from some guys at James firearms in Greer. Funny to see your story on here. Glad to hear you're doing a little better.
|
Ouch.

Just dropping in to give you guys an update on my status as promised.
Was transported to another doctor visit yesterday. Wasn't very sure who this doctor was, but found out he was one of my ER doctors that took care of me when I was first admitted to the hospital. He was also the doctor who noticed my ruptured spleen, lacerated liver, broken rib, and lung damage. I also found out that the damage to my right lung was more severe than I had thought as it had actually collapsed while I was in the ER. It recovered quickly, but did collapse nonetheless. He listened to my breathing and said everything sounded excellent and that I was lucky as all my damaged internal organs are self-repairing and should be better after 6 weeks. This includes the ~1" long and 1" deep laceration to my liver. So all is well on this side of the computer. My dad is pushing me pretty hard on the physical therapy which brings the pain, but it is necessary for my recovery. In doing so, I have regained 100% side-to-side motion in my left hip, and gained additional bend in my knees to get closer to 90 degrees. Hope all of you guys are doing great and enjoying your weekend. |

Dunno if it puts your mind at ease, but liver tissue is one of the fastest growing tissues in your body, hence the ability to cut half of it out and give it to someone else, so if it sounded bad, its not. Well any internal laceration is bad, but you get my point. So do you have a ~.5" scar on the sides of your rib cage? ~3-4" below your arm pit? Sounds like you're doing great. Working in an ICU in Portland I see a lot of this, more internal damage though, strokes and MIs and such, as we're not a trauma center, but even so, it sounds like you're recover very well. Be lucky you weren't 20-30 years older, it'd be more than double the recovery time. |
glad that you are alive. good luck on your recovery!
|
Glad to hear that progress is good.
|
Sorry to hear about your accident and am glad you are recovering well. I will back Hustler 120% for your genital rejuvenation (just protect your sphincter).

Just to put things into perspective, here are some pics of the car after and some of my scars I'm going to have after the surgery...

The car is ruined but those scars...
...they'll buff right out. Really sucks to read about this because it happened almost exactly the same way to a co-worker of mine a couple of years ago. Interestingly enough after the wildly expensive exploritory surgery he went through to find his internal bleeding he had almost all the exact same issues you had. Lacerated liver, punctured lung, ruptured spleen etc. He actually got criminal charges for crossing the center-line in his accident. Spent 2 weeks in jail and paid fines out the ass after he was completely healed. He was also not drinking. |
Holy Christ... Why did he get charged and arrested for crossing the center line? It was obviously not a felony DUI. Hate to hear that...
|
I spy, with my little eye, either scissors or a hemostat.

Well guys, it is another week and I thought I would give you guys another update on my status/progress. I have been working really hard during the weekend to make as much progress as possible. It seems to have really paid off. I am now completely dependent as far as getting in and out of the bed into the wheelchair, transferring to the john, and transferring into the shower bench seat. This is a big step from where I was.
Today, physical therapy has come and gone and I was able to accomplish a new 'skill'. I was actually able to stand up in the walker (with assistance still) and walk/turn around in the walker. It is a lot of work due to not being able to bare weight on my legs yet, but I was able to do it. I also have full range of motion inside-outside of both of my hips now. Degrees of bend in my knees are: right = 88 degrees and left = 85 degrees. So I am still progressing at a nice rate. Looking forward to things progressing this week to see where I end up. Hope everyone out there is having a great week and I will keep you guys updated as always as new things come up. |
So, the 60's vintage F150 with which you collided head-on, is it the same one visible in the background here, which seems to maybe have a slight tweak to the bumper?

Haha. That was not the same truck. I did get to see a few pics of the truck, and my Audi definitely put a hurting on it. I was surprised.

I was kind of curious about that. :D |
Thanks for posting these up because it's a nice reminder the potential a car in motion has in store for you if it goes wrong, regardless of how safe your car is. Definitely a brutal crash and injuries, but surely it could have been worse. So did you both cross the centerline? just you? how'd that happen?
