you could probably build an equal or better system than your uncle's for less by searching for used quality equipment. goto www.audioasylum.com and do some reading there (good place to start). Don't forget, a crucial factor in reproducing good sound quality is your listening room.

If you are going to the effort of making some speakers then build some ESLs. I did a while ago and they were awesome. I since traded them for some STAX headphones.

I love how audiophiles seem to crop up everywhere :P

I run a pair of monoblocked 405.2 amps 200W per channel Class A in to 8ohm

Its over kill for the spendor speakers I use but it sounds great.

Vintage Quad FTW!

Hey, I have that same driver :P

pat,

just maximize the space you have and build a box 18x26x36 out of 3/4" MDF.

That's around 8 cu.ft. for either one after driver displacement and stuff and you'll get these response curves

depending on whether you vent it or leave it sealed, or you can just vent it and make some sort of plug so you can hear it sealed :P

stuff the box with polyfill (or pillow stuffing stuff.. you can find bags at walmart for pretty cheap)

the vent will just be a 4" PVC tube from Home Depot probably and you'd have to cut it to 7.45"

But if you want to go sealed, 8 cu.ft is probably too big

IDK im just throwing ***** out
