I really want to build a 510 coupe to daily (56k cough and die)

but really prefer this look:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/167/4...842e1742_b.jpg

Of course it would be powered by a 1.6l miata motor sitting in the garage.

hustler 10-04-2008 03:16 PM

I had to replace that shit because the wheels were different sizes
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/178/4...1ac00d67_o.jpg

I would drive that shit every day.

Where can I find one of these?

Sleeper_MX5 10-04-2008 04:45 PM

My friend just sold his for 26k cash! it was on turbo magazine!

craigslist is your friend

KPLAFIN 10-04-2008 05:34 PM

Here's a good project in Fort Worth.

Not a bad price either if it's got little/no rust.

Yeah. The 510 has been popular since they were new. Drop in that 1.6, greddy upgraded with an intercooler, would be very nice. They are hard to find in good shape for reasonable money though. You can pretty much do a BMW 2002 for the same money. Another car that looks good with real performance mods.

Rafa 10-04-2008 08:03 PM

Those were insanely fast back in the day. We never got any 2 doors here (only 4 doors) but they were really, really fun to drive. My brother in law used to own of the few.

Another curious bit; they were called Datsun 510 SSS back then. Nissan had not changed its name yet.

bryantaylor 10-04-2008 11:10 PM

screw having old/project/race cars for a daily. my lincoln has spoiled me

Don't know if I could bring myself to put anything other than a 4AGE in it, though.

18psi 10-05-2008 02:31 AM

a local has a 510 with sr20 and a gt30r with supporting mods. thing is ridiculous

Fireindc 10-05-2008 03:55 AM

Those sr20 swaps look so damn clean in that engine bay. A 1.6 bp would be right at home.

m2cupcar 10-05-2008 08:24 AM

I'd go swedish

Newbsauce 10-05-2008 09:39 AM

The 510s are great, however, finding one that is not a rust bucket anymore is pretty difficult.

Good friend has a 510 4-dr he hopes to build... Sometime before he dies.

He's got an JDM SR20T waiting for it, and many too many projects before it.

Swedes can be great but they are heavy pigs. Seen a couple really nice builds. One that HPDE's around here. Classy older car. Tough to want a car that heavy though after driving the Miata. Light = might!

icantthink4155 10-05-2008 02:51 PM

Im stupid for 510s they are gorgeous!

My corrado drove like that. I loved the old 3rd-gear tire smoker/vette roller.

Nitroracer 10-05-2008 11:26 PM

I browse craigslist for people throwing out their old cars that I could turn into interesting daily drivers. Found a 63' ranchero, and a 66' valiant earlier today. Slant six and three on the tree.

Not too many good foreign cars left on the east coast. Rust eats them like candy.

UrbanSoot 10-05-2008 11:28 PM

thats my new project ;)

Midtenn 10-05-2008 11:51 PM

After daily driving AE86 Corolla's for years, I'm ready for some small measure of luxury in my daily driven vehicles. Those are some beautiful old school cars though.

I'm afraid of cars from the 21st century...way too much crap to go wrong, and probably stuff that I can't fix. After the vw debacle, I've changed what I want out of a vehicle.

miatamania 10-06-2008 09:09 AM

These are sick...a friend of mine races a scca pro mod (?) class with his...he is bringing up one of this cars to finish...since they have lights, turn signals, etc required by class rules...its going to be a street car :D

Me too. haha. Newest vehicle I own is the hardest to work on breaks the most often, and it's my tow vehicle! My other cars are a 91 MR2 Turbo and a 95 Miata. OBD1 for me please.

Along the same vein and vintage, here is my old dog. 72 Dodge colt. Gutted, cage, tube frame front half, fiberglass fenders, quarters, hood, decklid. Weighed 1,860 with front and rear glass. Running 13x10x20 canilevered slicks on 13x7 minilites.

This actual car was built by Car and Driver back in 73 for their project car. After the build they promptly crashed it at Lime Rock. A buddy of mine bought it and did the tube front to fix the damage and drove it for 20 years, winning the Mid-Div championship in 1980 in GT4.

1.6 SOHC C2 4g32
Dual Solex carbs
12.5:1 compression in C2 head
forged rods
forged pistons
.600 lift S9 cam
triple springs, titanium keepers
4 into 1 C2 header
2 1/2" straight exhaust

155bhp on 110 octane. Redline was 8200.

I never tracked it. Just used it for autocross in DP.

RdSnake 10-22-2008 10:28 AM

I have 2 other projects besides my miatas:
74 celica with 18RG DOHC engine with mikuni side drafts, close ratio 5 speed and TRD suspension.

77 celica liftback that will be the recipient for a 3SGE "BEAMS" engine with a 6 speed transmission.
