Works equally well in both circumstances IMHO. It is the method to bring an out-of-control car to a stop with minimal distance traveled. Of course, the best strategy for the road is granny driving.

Actually, the one time where I got bit was back when I had stock suspension. The transition from soft springs to hard rubber bumpstops can really upset the car. In this case, I was driving home from a long day at work and was nodding off a bit on an empty interstate. Opened my eyes, was out of position and put in an abrupt correction. Car hit those bumpstops and said "C'ya!" I spun for what seemed like an eternity. Ended up making light contact with a guard rail but was otherwise OK.

And then there's black ice . . . .

Not necessarily minimal distance. One of the primary goals when spinning on the track is to prevent the car from hooking back up and rapidly changing direction, so as to make it easier for the cars that AREN'T spinning to avoid you.

Exactly. I watched my buddy lose his car in T5 at Rd. Atlanta from my rear view as a back marker spinner let off the brake mid spin and rolled right in front of him. Sent him off to the outside into the butt end of the tire barrier and put the car about 8ft in the air. The guy had them locked up as I was coming to him, let off while I was next to him and start rolling back to the outside right as I passed. Both feet in was repeated several times at my driver school.
