Internet provider help
I need suggestions for a DSL internet provider to replace my Bellsouth DSL.
I have been with Bellsouth since before DSL was available, but have found out that if I don't keep my telephone service with them (We do not use the land line any more) that I cannot have DSL through them. So bye bye Bellsouth :sadwavey: Thanks Rick |
verizon fios if available in your area fo sho
|
No it is not.
|
Get cable and phone and interent through the same company, we use comcast and its cheaper than dsl with phone line.
|
plus cable should be more like 7-10mbps, unlike the max for dsl at 1.5mbps
|
Comcast is not available. So far I have only found Earthlink and Timewarner cable.
|
Verizon fios is showing up to 30mbps on there $180.00 plan:eek5:
|
they use roadrunner. i used to have that service back in the day, it's fine, like 5mbps.
|
fios + usenet subscription = 100's of dvds
|
Time Warner is fine. I've been a RoadRunner subscriber for years- first in Mason, OH (Cincinnati suburb) and presently in Carlsbad (northern San Diego). Never had any complaints about the service at all. Plus, they of course have the coolest mascot of all the HS providers. :D
Like yourself, I have no traditional telephone service- I use Vonage. |

lol newb =P I work for a small DSL ISP in Oregon. Unkown Myths aboot DSL 1)Comcast Cable will get you 7-8 megaBITS per second DOWNLOAD 2) Comcast will get you .3-.4 megaBITS per second UPLOAD 3) If you get close to that upload speed you choke the line and pwn your downstream to around .5 megaBITS 4) DSL can go up to 8 megaBITS down with a 1.5 megaBIT up. 5) DSL when max on the Upload can still get the same down 6) Call your DSL phone provider most of them have a standalone line for 5-9 bucks a month that will run DSL to your hizzy just no phone. Gotta call them and bitch about it though cus they dont like selling it due to they make more $$$ off of phone lines as for your situation call around and try and find a local ISP that does DSL they can prolly help you find a phone company around that will do a stand alone line. IF your only phone company around is Belsouth (aka the people who own the DSL lines in ze ground) then your screwed and I'd recommend going Comcast but if anything goes wrong fear their Tech Support from India =P. Comcast is fine and all but for what 60 bucks a month for it I'd rather have well in my area at least the 54.99 + 5 bucks of stand alone for a 7meg DSL line. Doh Im a newb you cant get Comcast. DONT GO EARTHLINK SWEET JESUS DONT GO ROADRUNNER OVER EARTHLINK. |
boy I'd kill for a 5 meg DSL line, I've about had it with comcast.

Down/Up 256/256 756/256 1.5m/512 3m/756 6-7-8m/756-1.5m some offer less some offer more I know that we offer 256/756/1.5/7 |
I miss living on campus.....dual oc-48 connections for campus. Although the rooms had old 10T ports. Lets just say that they got very near their theoretical throughput :) I think I :cough: downloaded :cough: over 500 ...video films.. freshman year. I now have a hefty collection.
If you are farmiliar with usenet then you will know the plethora of downloads that can be obtained. Along those lines though, I read that comcast is actually implementing a policy that says they can ban "excessive bandwidth" users from service for up to a year if they choose. They haven't stated what that limit is though. I don't usenet much anymore because I'm not on campus, and my roommates play WoW and bitch and moan if I d/l. |

Call your phone provider. Most ISP's for DSL do a breakdown like so
Down/Up 256/256 756/256 1.5m/512 3m/756 6-7-8m/756-1.5m some offer less some offer more I know that we offer 256/756/1.5/7 Yeah, I'm switching. For what I pay for my 5 down/MAYBE half up cable I can get 7/896kb the up is with qwest, price guaranteed for life, 41.99 plus taxes of about 8 bucks. It'll be hooked up next thursday :hs: |
FiOS FTW
20/5 connection for $49, TimeWarner/Brighthouse can't touch dedicated network speeds of FIBER TO THE HOME!!! hahaha |
I'm surprised brainy doesn't have FiOS what with his new northern virginia early rollout.
I've got the 3/768 from Verizon. It's nice except for the midday disconnects... and when I upload at max, it totally slows my downloads. |

call qwest and yell a bit more at them. In Oregon Qwests State plan for 7down is a 1.5 meg up not 896k.
as it is with comcast I have to limit my torrent uploads to 20k/sec because it'll max my connection out at 30. Even at 20 my vonage is a little spotty. |

Be warned with Qwest if you ever have slow speeds call them up and be a fuckhole about it else they never fix it. |
