Internet provider help

I need suggestions for a DSL internet provider to replace my Bellsouth DSL.
I have been with Bellsouth since before DSL was available, but have found out that if I don't keep my telephone service with them (We do not use the land line any more) that I cannot have DSL through them. So bye bye Bellsouth :sadwavey:

Thanks Rick

Philip 04-06-2007 03:23 PM

verizon fios if available in your area fo sho

RickS 04-06-2007 03:47 PM

No it is not.

Loki047 04-06-2007 03:48 PM

Get cable and phone and interent through the same company, we use comcast and its cheaper than dsl with phone line.

Braineack 04-06-2007 03:59 PM

plus cable should be more like 7-10mbps, unlike the max for dsl at 1.5mbps

RickS 04-06-2007 04:00 PM

Comcast is not available. So far I have only found Earthlink and Timewarner cable.

RickS 04-06-2007 04:02 PM

Verizon fios is showing up to 30mbps on there $180.00 plan:eek5:

Braineack 04-06-2007 04:07 PM

they use roadrunner. i used to have that service back in the day, it's fine, like 5mbps.

neogenesis2004 04-06-2007 05:19 PM

fios + usenet subscription = 100's of dvds

Joe Perez 04-06-2007 05:50 PM

Time Warner is fine. I've been a RoadRunner subscriber for years- first in Mason, OH (Cincinnati suburb) and presently in Carlsbad (northern San Diego). Never had any complaints about the service at all. Plus, they of course have the coolest mascot of all the HS providers. :D

Like yourself, I have no traditional telephone service- I use Vonage.

lol newb =P I work for a small DSL ISP in Oregon.

Unkown Myths aboot DSL

1)Comcast Cable will get you 7-8 megaBITS per second DOWNLOAD
2) Comcast will get you .3-.4 megaBITS per second UPLOAD
3) If you get close to that upload speed you choke the line and pwn your downstream to around .5 megaBITS
4) DSL can go up to 8 megaBITS down with a 1.5 megaBIT up.
5) DSL when max on the Upload can still get the same down
6) Call your DSL phone provider most of them have a standalone line for 5-9 bucks a month that will run DSL to your hizzy just no phone. Gotta call them and bitch about it though cus they dont like selling it due to they make more $$$ off of phone lines

as for your situation call around and try and find a local ISP that does DSL they can prolly help you find a phone company around that will do a stand alone line. IF your only phone company around is Belsouth (aka the people who own the DSL lines in ze ground) then your screwed and I'd recommend going Comcast but if anything goes wrong fear their Tech Support from India =P.

Comcast is fine and all but for what 60 bucks a month for it I'd rather have well in my area at least the 54.99 + 5 bucks of stand alone for a 7meg DSL line.

Doh Im a newb you cant get Comcast. DONT GO EARTHLINK SWEET JESUS DONT GO ROADRUNNER OVER EARTHLINK.

Philip 04-06-2007 09:11 PM

boy I'd kill for a 5 meg DSL line, I've about had it with comcast.

Call your phone provider. Most ISP's for DSL do a breakdown like so

Down/Up

256/256
756/256
1.5m/512
3m/756
6-7-8m/756-1.5m

some offer less some offer more I know that we offer 256/756/1.5/7

neogenesis2004 04-06-2007 09:45 PM

I miss living on campus.....dual oc-48 connections for campus. Although the rooms had old 10T ports. Lets just say that they got very near their theoretical throughput :) I think I :cough: downloaded :cough: over 500 ...video films.. freshman year. I now have a hefty collection.

If you are farmiliar with usenet then you will know the plethora of downloads that can be obtained. Along those lines though, I read that comcast is actually implementing a policy that says they can ban "excessive bandwidth" users from service for up to a year if they choose. They haven't stated what that limit is though. I don't usenet much anymore because I'm not on campus, and my roommates play WoW and bitch and moan if I d/l.

Yeah, I'm switching. For what I pay for my 5 down/MAYBE half up cable I can get 7/896kb the up is with qwest, price guaranteed for life, 41.99 plus taxes of about 8 bucks.
It'll be hooked up next thursday :hs:

Fritch 04-07-2007 12:39 AM

FiOS FTW

20/5 connection for $49, TimeWarner/Brighthouse can't touch dedicated network speeds of FIBER TO THE HOME!!! hahaha

y8s 04-07-2007 10:37 AM

I'm surprised brainy doesn't have FiOS what with his new northern virginia early rollout.

I've got the 3/768 from Verizon. It's nice except for the midday disconnects...

and when I upload at max, it totally slows my downloads.

call qwest and yell a bit more at them. In Oregon Qwests State plan for 7down is a 1.5 meg up not 896k.

not real worried about it.

as it is with comcast I have to limit my torrent uploads to 20k/sec because it'll max my connection out at 30. Even at 20 my vonage is a little spotty.

well with 896 up you now have 90-100k upload to use. lol. 7megabit down is around 800-900k download speed.

and if you ever wanna check www.speedtest.net place rocks. Be warned with Qwest if you ever have slow speeds call them up and be a fuckhole about it else they never fix it.

Fios is the shizz. I have had britehouse(time warner) before and the picture quality for the tv is uncompromised. Even the non HD telecast from FIos owns Timewarner. The internet services rocks too. Of course, if it isnt available, then it is a mute point, and Timewarner is the next closest thing.

96rdstr 04-08-2007 09:18 AM

Here is y connection speed with Fios' basic 5mbps service. They have a 10 or 15 service for like 10 bones more per month.

call your ISP. 1.5Meg should get LEAST 1.1megs. Call them if you consistently don't get above 900.

Next time I do it at work I'll post mine. 35m down and 15m up. =)

oh btw, the 15/2 service you're referring to was recently upgraded to 20/5 for the same price. I sell this stuff every day ;)

yeah, but I pay like 30.00 for the 15/2, they want like 40 something for the 20/5(new rates). I dont need that kind of bandwidth. Even with the VOIP phone I have in the home office does just fine on the 15/2.

y8s 04-09-2007 11:08 PM

I just switched my cell phone over to a data plan so I could browse and shit. I get 150kbps download over a bluetooth tether. not 3g sadly.

Pitlab77 04-10-2007 01:19 AM

Ihate time warner. Their techs are idiots that do nothing but read scripts even after you tell them that you have already run all "their" test and want to speak to level II (aka) in the USA support.

And they can never get anyone out for days

756k dsl? eh

[shamless plug] stay local with your ISP then when you call tech support you can a local person =P and if the problem is on the qwest/verizon/whoever side the local people will deal with calling the indian tech support for you.[/shameless plug]

Earthlink via a time warner cable connection... Not Shabby

I'm pretty happy with this since I live in a place where the fastest DSL I could get was previously 768k. It's reliable and functional.

That's for the low low $35 per month plus another $30 for the phone line I never use. They don't do the DSL only service in GA.

had comcast for nearly 18 months.... roughly half of that I didn't pay for because the service was shit. internet was dropping over a hundred times a day... the tv would not get ANY picture for hours at a time... I'm never going with comcast again, and probably not cable either. Check out the AT&T unity plans... we are getting satelite, dsl, long distance, and in the near future mobile phone on one bill and fairly cheap (under $100 without the mobiles... with them it's like $155). I think my comcast was $150/mn for internet/tv that rarely worked right.

speed test it and if it isnt running right call qwest and yell... they fuck up a lot. Them Indians they use build the connections to the wrong routers all the time. I hate dealing with qwest.

The test is too dependant on performance of the server. I get results from 4000kb/s to over 15000kb/s depending on which server I choose. Neat graphics though.

Yeah, try the closest to your location and then one or two that are around the same area. I know my work when i Ping to Portland from Corvallis (70mi) away I get 15-20m down 10m up. If I ping to LA i get 35m down 23m up because we are on the same back-haul line that runs to LA. So we are going down our own Fiber line all the way to the server as in to portland we bounce around a bit. It is still the best way to check your avg speed other then say running a ping command and then doing all the math.

yeah, but.. it's quite consistent between tests, and if I run the cable and dsl at the same time on two different lines and my 5mb cable line runs 5mb and my 7mb DSL runs 5mb I kind of have issue....

plus comcast has a hell of a burst, I can burst 12mb for a second.
