What do you like about the job, day to day etc? What are the cons to the job? How saturated is the industry now and in 2 years would you say ? What level PE are you, how long have you been at the job and how did you get in?

 

Daily problem solving, troubleshooting, casual atmosphere, complex process keeps things interesting, temporary assignments in the states or over seas if you're into that kinda thing.

Shift work, takes years off your life, work with hazardous materials, everything can kill you, most jobs are away from home (not mine though)

Saturated now with oil's drop, 2 years if will be busy again I imagine.

I'm a 3rd class working on my 2nd, I've been doing it 4 years, got hired a few months before school ended, high GPA but that didn't matter because I was interviewed by car guys and we just talked about my Miata mostly

I'd say there are plenty if engr jobs in remote locations that you won't have a 100-200k salary, but could make that in per diem, overtime, and incentive pay. One site that I was on in the states paid $600/week per diem, 20% incentive and time and a half OT for salary engineers. Of course, the only free time you have you spend sleeping and your friends and family are your coworkers...and you'll probably go through 2-3 wives unless you are lucky enough to have her working in the front office with you so you can see her a few hours a week.

 

If you're willing to travel, and live in pretty lame conditions, you can make a ton of money. One of my dad's contractor friends worked all over the country. Willing to take any job anywhere in the US, and leave on a moment's notice. He rarely worked more than 6 months out of the year, and spent the rest of his time on a huge houseboat somewhere in Florida. But you gotta be good at what you do to be the go-to guy for jobs like that.

Last I saw him was probably 30 years ago, and he had retired at 50 with plenty of cash in the bank.

 

I prefer jobs where I work <5 min from home, get paid double time for OT, have a schedule that gives me 5 days on 5 days off and can drive my car to site. But to each their own.
