Santa Clara = Silicon Valley?
my high school job was pharmacy delivery guy and I drove through all the areas where the tech sector grew up. In a sense, I watched it hatch in real time. This was around 1991 and on. |
Oh what...Joe's coming to Nor Cal?!
|
Point of speculation:
Joe is giving away all of his garage posessions. Santa Clara has garages! What the eff? |

We can talk about electronics, turbos, monetary systems, and conspiracies over beer! |
He's going to buy a Prius and become a hipster.

And instead of internet slap fights, you guys can get in real world slap fights

You guys have it all wrong. Joe is getting a big check to jump ship so he is selling all his old crap and getting ready to buy all new top-of-the-line equipment (or going minimalist chic and paying someone else to get their hands dirty).
Plus, he needs space to park the Porsche. |

It has become abundantly clear why Joe has parted with all his human possessions:
First Apple Computer Sells at Auction for $387,750 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1373543157 (AP) First Apple computer sells at auction for $387,750 NEW YORK An original Apple computer from 1976 has sold at auction for nearly $388,000. Known as the Apple 1, it was one of the first Apple computers ever built. It sold Monday for $387,750 at a Christie's online-only auction. Bolaffi, an Italian collections company, says in a statement that it bought the computer. The seller was a retired school psychologist from Sacramento, Calif. Vintage Apple products have become a hot item since Steve Jobs' death in October 2011. Jobs joined forces with Steve Wozniak to build computer prototypes in a California garage, and Wozniak built the Apple 1. Another Apple 1 was sold in May for a record $671,400 by a German auction house. It broke a record of $640,000 set in November. |
Bumping this for legitimate claims.
I think Joe is going to be an 18 wheel truck driver after his NYC ventures.

Hmm.
Well, I'd definitely have to move someplace cheaper, as $1,500 a week isn't a fuckton anywhere I've lived recently (San Diego, Silicon Valley, NYC). But on the other hand, you've very nearly described my dream job otherwise. Granted, I usually travel by air rather than by ground, but the whole "away from home for weeks on end" thing doesn't bother me in the least- I do it all the time, and in fact I get antsy when I'm in one place too long.

I take it that you were a company driver. What was your impression of the scene for Owner-Operators, in terms of pay, scheduling, etc?

Presupposing that one has the means, would it be better to simply purchase a new truck for cash up front, rather than financing a new purchase or always buying used?
