^We can't even shut the door when we go to sleep, otherwise the cats take turns scratching at the door non-stop.

That.

I tried once to outlast them and not open the door but they scratched and yowled until 4 in the morning when I caved.

And in typical cat fashion, when I opened the door they walked away.

His big power move is when we leave him outside he will jump and latch onto the screen of the window on our room and meow until someone gets up and lets him in.

I feel like when we have kids they will be less dependent on us than this cat is.

Trust me, after the kid hits 4 or 5, they are much less needy.

If you let them outside they get exercise and stay slim.

and get run over by cars, or catch deadly diseases, or get eaten by rabid foxes, or get in fights with other cats..

he also has anitexty issues and would probably rage quit life if he was outside for an extended period of time.

Inside/outside cat. He is obese and has been hit by a car (or skateboard). Note the tongue slightly protruding from his mouth.

I can't imagine my cats not going out. Yes, it's a risk. It's called life.

Locking people up is called prison. Why is it okay to lock up a semi-wild animal?
