thx and no thx guys haha. i am the guy int eh red/white striped shirt. i do have tennis shoes on, my old ass worn thin ones. the guy whereing sandles was just there for the ride. kevin, stupid flying guy... hes just an idiot, always. yea i made the roll bar, never got around to putting it in untill last weekend. and yes i did destroy the diff on my way down. after i got to the bottom i saw a good gas station so i told granger (flip flop dude riding with me) that i was gonna see if it could even hold any boost with it all fucked up, so i went into second, hit about 7 psi and it exploded, the subbie behind me saw a ton of oil fly out the axle holes and they werea bout 50 ft back and heard it go out. then it just sounds like rocks after that and the engine is no longer connected to the ground so we pulled into the gas station.

no wire tuck, megasquirt and not using any extra options on the car is why is pretty much empty, but nothing is tucked. turns out i have been rich and can still pull another 15-20whp more out of it next time i tune. looks like itll be awhile till i am back on the road, gotta swap diffs, change front main seal, change the plugs, alignment, bolt on the new suspension, primer the rest of the body and paint it and get it tuned again. probly be done by the end of may. .... then she will be done! well except for the hardtop when i get rich

i lost mine a month ago. the pinion broke on mine, not the ring gear. the u-joints on the driveshaft were really stiff. i like my MS lsd, so i had a shot peened ring and pinion installed with new bearings and seals.

mxv 05-01-2007 01:35 AM

putting in my 1.8 open/(torsen) ((fingers crossed for it being a torsen) in a few weeks. donor car has 90k miles. would you suggest me replacing the bearings and seals when i put it in or when i switch it over to a clutch pack? or just never bother?

akaryrye 05-01-2007 01:59 AM

how about bushings too? Mmrdirect.com?

cjernigan 05-01-2007 02:07 AM

You guys keep reminding me. I need to go see mmr and see what's up. They're like 2 miles from me.

surprised the pinon went and not the ring.

neogenesis2004 05-04-2007 08:28 PM

had a few teeth get chewed up on the ring, but not as bad i was going to expect. and even that was probly caused by the pinion going out. so tecnically that means, my 1.8 rear end is just as suseptable to breaking as this one right?

kung fu jesus 05-04-2007 10:03 PM

yours looks like mine, but not as bad. the pinion split of about 40% of the helix, not just the teeth, the actual pinion.

i have a shop i goto here since i don't have the time or garage space anymore. the owner is japanese as are the rest of the employees (all are difficult to understand), but their workmanship and knowledge of miatas is second to none. he told me that when the u-joints start to stiffen on the miatas, the vibration it causes just eats up the pinion. i never knew that.

i'm not one to take my car in for repairs, but i have to admit, i never doubt these guys. hiro's garage in costa mesa. koji-san ftmfw.

got the 1.8 conversion in with some modification of the ends of the axles from me trying to knock them out. everything went it great other than that. my hoping for a torsen was for nothing. but i never looked inside.

is there a way to tell by turning the pinon and seeing what happens to the axles or buy turning the axles?

ya if you take off the stubshafts off and look through the hole, if there is a bar going across in the middle it is an open.

aka its already in

kung fu jesus 05-06-2007 02:24 PM

make your own water box and dump the clutch?

Al Hounos 05-06-2007 02:27 PM

yeah, prettymuch the only way i believe, just drive it hard, you should be able to tell. you can't turn the wheels because a torsen will turn opposite ways like an open.

Braineack 05-06-2007 03:04 PM

the pinon gear on the 1.8 should still be larger.

look through the stub holes, if you can see through it's a LSD, see the bar (as above) it's an open.

just do a couple of donuts in a parking lot and if the car wants to go wide, you have an open differential.

cjernigan 05-06-2007 10:45 PM

I have an open, my brodies suck. When turning my driveshaft both wheels turn the same direction though, is that normal?

mxv 05-07-2007 12:57 AM

yea it wont take long to find out if its open or not by driving, but its still not drivable. front main seal is out, thats my next job. i got 13 tires on wheels to take care of, all bald and need to be thrown. when i get her back on the road and pump out another 15-20 more whp out of her ill take care of some rubber and well know if its an open or not haha.
