Miata gods smile upon me
I think they are happy that my V8 car was driven last night.
Today on my local car forum a Miata ad pops up for a black 94 with no PS or AC and bilstiens, clean California rust-free car. And a hard top. For $2000 obo. No pics, though.
After calling and getting the VIN from the seller and calling Mazda to verify that it was in fact an R package I bought it sight unseen. Driving 2 1/2 hrs each way tonight after work. I have since seen pics. It has some issues but I was happy with it.
No, I didn't haggle. I paid the whole $2,000 for a hard top equipped 94 R.
:inb4yousuck:
EDIT: Pics show some interesting add-ons. Remote oil filter, some carbon fiber headlight bucket thingys with two little head lights in each-barn doors are gone, turn signal indicators, who knows what else is on it.

You can now hate me more. When I got there and drove it I told him that it wasn't what he had described. He agreed and we settled on $1300. Ran fine at 75 for the 200 mile run home. 80 was not safe. Motor pulls strong and there is an aftermarket exhaust on it that appears pretty new. The rears were completely skins with wire cords showing through. Bilsteins need to be rebuilt. Bushings are shot. All stuff I would do anyway but I used it to push the price down. One outside rear latch is broken off of the hard top. This was the biggest downside for me. Well, that and it has a "nice matched staggered set of rimz" - staggered as in 17 on the rear 16 on the front. Not sure of the brand.
On a positive side, here is the wheel that I got with the car It is in perfect shape.
The car was impounded on a drug stop going from CA to Iowa. Guy I got it from bought it from the towing company so he still made money at $1300. He drove it for a year.

Not selling the wheel. The plan is the entire drivetrain including suspension, front and rear subframes are being transplanted into one of these:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_96
but it will be modded, heavily, for road course work. More like this:

Gutted, caged, semi-tube framed, firewall moved back about 10", turned into a 2 seat car, small turbo installed. It WILL be badass.
The SAAB has similar dimensions to the Miata. A bit narrower and a bit longer in wheelbase. Converting from FWD to RWD will take fab work but no biggie. The underside is dead flat on the car.
I just started casually looking for a 94-97 donor last week now that the V8 car is nearing completion. When this hit, with the R package, but not nice enough that I feel guilty cannibalizing it, I knew I lucked out.
The SAAB is in a local's shed as a roller. Looks like $200 will buy it with lots of spare fenders, doors, glass, etc. Good to have in the event of an off.

I'm putting together some design ideas.

Interesting concept car. Can draw some inspiration from this. I need to gain about 4-5" of width over the wheels anyway.

I really, really like this.
