I recently watched The Darjeeling Limited for the second time, with someone special.

I get the ending now. They are leaving all of their father's baggage behind, and moving on to the next step of their life journey unencumbered.

Totally missed that the first time.

I kept seeing Sicario pop on my Netflix suggestions... finally watched last night. Great little flick. Benicio Del Toro is awesome.

I really wanted a bit more "closure" at the end with the main chick... what happens to her? Does she get promoted? Does she go crazy?

rleete 11-03-2017 06:20 PM

She cries and they promote her. She never arrests anybody ever again.

Actually, I thought her breaking down at the end was sort of out of character. Did she want to get the bad guys, or what? Did she think that they played by the rules? She had already seen what they were capable of, why did she suddenly become some sort of white knight?

thirdgen 11-03-2017 06:41 PM

I liked that flick...actually just recommended it to a buddy 2 days ago.

rleete 11-03-2017 07:05 PM

Oh, don't get me wrong, I liked it as well.

It's just when he's walking away, and she has the gun on him, he knows she's broken - she won't shoot. Sort of a shell shock/PTSD thing. Which is why I made the comment above. She gets promoted for helping break up the ring of baddies, but she's spent. She will never be a field agent (or at least not an effective one) ever again. He knows all that, and while it saddens him, he counts it as part of the cost.

My favorite part of the movie is the wet willie interrogation technique.

slug_dub 11-04-2017 06:34 PM

Ghost in the Shell... seriously disappointing. I'll watch it again just to clarify why if any of you are going to cry foul about it. :p

I liked Sicario. Speaking of Villeneuve, anybody see The Arrival or of course Blade Runner 2049??

Blade Runner was really solid... its not perfect, but I felt it stands up on its own while still doing the material justice. The story wasn't so hard to figure out that it made watching it annoying, and many of the visuals are quite spectacular. Score might be a little too loud in places.

Tonight's selection:

I really liked Hell or High Water

I went into this one with low expectations, but didn't hate it at all. Bad casting choice, but we also know that actresses are cast by the blowies they give, not acting abilities.

I had even lower expectations for this one considering I couldn't even get through the original -- twice. I enjoyed it, they did a good job with it. still slow and boring, but they built the characters/story up well.

Watched this last night...it was decent.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

So The Force Awakens is the soft reboot that it is and all that goes which really mean: its a carbon copy of episode 4.
The characters are pretty good overall... but its a pretty dumb story.
Its a lot of fan service to try and save face but I can live with that.

The Last Jedi though... what the hell happened here? They went straight back to doing the same stupid shit George did with the prequels to tell a stupid story with complexifications that serve no purpose than to make the scene ideas they came up with make sense.

Just like with the Brianne of The Empire (who can remember her actual characters name??) they introduced another character without really giving him any context or super objective that you just *know* is going to be in the next movie hence being introduced, but theres no anticipation of what that might be for because he's just plonked in this one to drive plot in a few scenes and nothing more. This is exactly what they've done with Brianne of The Empire... she shows up again in this movie only to serve a small plotty fight scene, and thats it. What was his fucking name again?

Most of this movie is about two ships drifting through space because one ran out of fuel.

Luke has become a whiny bitch.

Kylo Ren is still a whiny bitch.

They fill so much of the movie with Kylo Ren and Lukes continued whiny bitchiness that theres no space to even really explore Rei skirting with the darkside.

Chewbacca is essentially sidelined because there's no Han for him to play off.

Porgs: unfunny comedy relief is unfunny.

Snoke is so absolutely not scary because he is very shabbily introduced in terms of plot and blocking. Boom... 5 mins in and we're in Snokes red room and he's jabbering away. The first we see of him he's way back in the room in a super wide shot sitting down. We know he's a bad guy cos his room is red. He must be scary. No impact at all.

Confusing 'Hows Finn?' 'Where's Rei?' tensions suggesting *something* that point to them being red blooded humans that they continue to then dispense with, ignore or chuck in other characters to confound, like Rose.

I don't need these movies to be like old Star Wars. I make this rant because I simply want movies to be made with basic and fundamental elements that make them enjoyable to watch... oh wait thats where I went wrong.

rleete 12-19-2017 07:35 AM

You are confused about the purpose for this movie. You assume it is to entertain, or at least further some plot line.

WRONG.

It is, simply, to milk as much cash (almost $20 a ticket? NFW) out of the masses as possible around the holiday season. And you rubes keep buying, so they'll keep making.

thirdgen 12-19-2017 08:29 AM

The Weatherman, starring Nicholas Cage...absolutely sucked. I watched it while I was on a flight. Made me wish my plane crashed into the English Channel, and they made a movie about it that would be the most depressing movie ever made, which would still be better than any Nicholas Cage movie. You suck, Nicholas Cage...nobody likes you.

Speaking of the English Channel, I also watched Dunkirk. Nice spelling hack job, Hollywood. Wasn't a fan of this movie, I felt it went very slow, and didn't do a good job of telling the story.

TurboTim 12-19-2017 08:31 AM

Eh, I liked it (newest star wars) a lot. Much better than staring at my iphone for 2.5 hours. I'm the type that can go into a movie and not think too much and enjoy it. It's a fucking movie. My wife on the other hand...yeah true, poe via finn going off and doing his thing with rose was the direct reason 99% of the resistance was killed off. Good job assholes.

They should not have killed off the cuter asian. :dunno:

$20/ticket, are you all nuts?! I just looked at my Fandango email, I paid $15.38 for 2 tickets. We got there at 9:20 for the 10 showing, and the adjacent "imax" show at 9 was just starting. Horray for coming attractions I guess.

Also, it's not IMAX if it's not a the franklin institute, seriously wtf. That ghetto IMAX is just a slightly bigger screen that's curved at the sides. Lame.

Braineack 12-19-2017 08:57 AM

I'm seeing it again tonight in a real imax theater.

The Smithsonian's two IMAX® theaters are the largest and most technologically advanced theaters in the Washington, DC region! Offering dual 4K laser projection and 2D and 3D presentations, watching our giant-screen films that measures up to 6 stories tall offer a truly remarkable and immersive movie-going experience.
sub's issues are exactly why I thought the decision to go with a new director for each film was dumb. There were a lot of pointless scenes and attempts at comic relief. Nothing was answered. He rendered Snoke completely pointless.

I really hope JJ can pull it back together, but now I really think it needs to more films to do it. I'm going to be pissed when the 3rd film starts: It's been ten years and the rebel alliance has rebuilt...and it's full of a bunch of shitty fat Asian girl actors who have the force.

on your complaints:

Luke was like yoda. detached and didn't care.

of course Ren was still a whiney bitch -- all skywalkers were.

I don't feel like rei was skirting with the darkside more that she was searching for answers -- but the scene with the mirror was retarded.

Snoke was always dumb -- all of a sudden there's this new sith lord that's the more powerful in the force than anyone else? and everyone seems to know him? he was always dumb and I'm glad they killed him off, but it made Snoke pointless.

I gagged every time Rose was on screen. One of the worst actors ive seen in a long time -- she must give good head.

while the movie was entertaining, Rian Johnson did the franchise a disservice. I felt he was more concerned about silly side stories that didn't advance the plot at all, and making sure he hired as many women roles as possible -- despite acting skills (rose was awful, and so was the purple haired chick). Think about Order 66 and when all the Jedi were being killed off -- even in that shitty movie Lucas tried to convey how awful it was with intense music and misery and despair. While all the transports were being picked off one by one, it was like: Oh well, here's some shiny foxes! He was most concerned with pushing his weird mushy feelings about Hope and making the story his own.

And like I said, no questions for Force Awakens were answered at all. Even in the first trilogy, they gave away darth vader as lukes dad in the second. this one gave away nothing -- all that happened was the rebel alliance was basically destroyed, but don't worry some slave kids also have the force and eventually in 20 years they can rise up.

One thing I couldn't figure out at the end was: Chewie jettisons Rei off on Snoke's ship. She fights Ren and they explode the light saber. Suddenly she's back with Chewie on the flacon to save the day -- how did that happen?

I hated the Casino scene so much. That whole half hour should have been cut.

Well this is the crux of it yes. Not to get carried away with dissecting the ridiculousness of basing your entire workflow around market research alone... they are going to make movies that cost this much anyway. Some people are going to pay to see it anyway. It doesn't cost anymore to make them actually good, and then there would be less rubes because they are also experiencing actually good stuff... and even more people would likely go. Humans are so dumb.

Then the story could have been about that, and also about training Rei... 'I didn't realise why Yoda didn't want to teach me at the start but now I do...'
I can get behind Ren being Lukes nephew and that it all went wrong and all that, but in that case make the damn movie about that and stop trying to tell it in past tense while your actual current story is about two ships drifting through space :p

A fair point I should have remembered that. :D
