I believe this is why I see most motorcyclists around here sitting to the far side of the lane when at a stop. Easy to see what is behing you and already most out of the way with a clear exit path.

NICE!, i still remember when i first got my bike. The torque on tap was intoxicating, and the intake note is awesome. Let us know if you have any questions about tuninig it and whatnot, and most of all get us some pictures!

I love a SM, but i would be such a hooligan on one. Awesome bike, i'd like to add one to the stable some day.

The hooliganism becomes an addiction, I definitely recommend the DRZ. It might not be as fast as others but they are tanks. I have 18.5k miles on mine and counting!

The SuMo school is such a great deal, arrive and ride until you are too tired.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned it further back in this thread, but I had the nastiest DRZ400SM in the land. Yosh full Ti, FCR-MX carb, Millennium big bore, gutted airbox, under 300lbs wet. It was more fun than anyone has any right to have on two wheels, but it was a miserable only bike. It felt like you were destroying the thing to maintain 80mph with a group of other bikes, it was deafening, a full tank would get you half the distance that a sport bike would go, and it was a torture device after 30 minutes in the saddle.

That bike actually led to the end of my actively riding every day and getting back into 4 wheel toys. Maybe if it had been a second bike I would have been happier with it, but after a few months it just made me feel like a jackass when I found myself riding like I was brain dead every time I hopped on the thing.

Sounds like my bike except for the big bore kit, I'll probably snag one when this motor goes south. I really feel you on the freeway thing, I find myself avoiding freeways more and more especially with the 44t rear sprocet. I still manage to get places in the same amount of time with questionable antics. Two things I've really been eye-ing are the Clarke 3.9 gallon gas tank and a Seat concepts seat to help alleviate the distance problem.

The other solution I've considered, is picking up something like a V-Strom, DL650 or SV650 to have some touring ability for very little money.

I received a full fairing kit with my bike because he didn't want it. I believe the kit is from this company:
BUELL XB9R-XB12R 2002-05 FAIRING, FULL RACE FAIRINGS, FENDER, TAIL, SEAT COWL, UNDERTAIL, CCS, THUNDERBIKE

The pieces I have are the fiberglass versions of these







How easy will these pieces be to sell? The tail piece is painted black. The other two pieces are bare, sanded, and ready for paint. What would a good price to get a quick sale without giving them away?

Honestly, go over to buellxb.com and sell those things. Pretty neat forum, obviously nothing like this one.. tons of old people, squids, and rednecks. However, parts sell like a quickness over there, and honestly the prices on some of these random obscure buell parts can be pretty absurd (considering the cost of a whole bike).

Those things will probably fetch a decent amount too. I honestly have no idea what to ask for em, other than pull up the MSRP and take near 1/2 off. Should get you a quick sale and not be ripping anyone off (yourself or the buyer).

Although you might be able to get more. I really dont know what kind of demand there is for those right now.

I love the bike. 66hp, 295lbs bare. I use it for exploring the local mountains and desert. A bit big for tight single track but anything faster than a jogging pace is fine. Rough double track and fast desert roads are where it shines. Eats rear tires like candy. Headlight sucks. Wheelies at will.

Pulled some of the emissions equipment and other bits to shed a few lbs.
These bikes are known for sometimes having minor chafing and strain issues in the wiring harness. Reroutes, zip tied and insulated a few things here and there.

Tuning the thing was huge. Stock, it liked to flameout if you rolled the throttle on too quickly from a stop. It also bucked a bit at low rpm. DBW throttle is tuneable. Good thing because the stock map was so sensitive that plonking over loose ground was a lesson in frustration. Too sharp throttle response and too much low RPM torque made it sketchy at low speeds. Tweaked the EP maps (throttle) to damp throttle inputs, added fuel to FI map (fuel), left spark table untouched. Now you can drag the front brake until it skids with the throttle closed and the ECU will chug it forward without stalling like. Those changes allows me to ride one gear taller everywhere and just smoothly exit 10mph sandy switch backs with complete control. Does 105mph on the top end. Doesn't every enduro bike?

Sorry for the shitty cellphone pics but that is the only camera I own. The stock tail piece was red so I decided to plastidip the whole bike white. It isn't perfect but it looks great from any farther than a foot or two away. It was super cheap too. We will see how it lasts.

Nice man, they usually call that color combo a "creamsicle" buell, they didn't make any in that combo from the factory. I like it, but.. dear god, get rid of the green!

I know it's hot, but hope you didn't ride it with those shoes . Seriously though atgatt.

Getting a motard is a great way to prove to the world you're not into bikes to look cool. They look like a riot to ride. Honestly, even my TL and VFR were faster than I trust myself not to be a tool/kill myself with.

Right now I'm trying to decide whether to pull the basketcase GPZ900, which I was trying to get running about 7 years ago, out from my parents' deck.

I love the idea, but I already have more into it than it would be worth IF it were running, and I have at least that amount to go before there's even any chance of it being streetable. I've rebuilt the top end (was a project to learn on), compression numbers were great, it ran awesome for about 10 minutes aside from leaking/burning oil like a sieve, and it needed all kinds of stuff, including repairing a leaking rad and fuel tank, before I put it under my parents' deck years ago. I have no idea how badly it's rusted now (it was at least under a cover). It is a unique bike, and frankly I think I'd rather have it as a street bike than a newer sport bike - more reasonable performance, more comfortable (after cartridge emulators), and there's just something about having what was the fastest production bike 30 years ago. In a straight line it would still run even to my '09 VFR, which is pretty impressive considering how primitive it is. With the engine out, you can see how spindly the frame is. I think my mountain bike may be stiffer.



If bike parts were anywhere near as cheap as car parts are, this would be a much easier project to justify, but when you're talking about a radiator barely larger than your hand that costs $400, costs add up quick for a vehicle that'll be worth $1500 when it's finished. By comparison, turboing the Miata seems like a sound financial proposition.

I occasionally watch Top Gun to psych myself up over the whole thing.

I am slowly removing all of the green. The PO painted almost all of the bolts green as well which I have mostly replaced already with new hardware and locktite red. Those are also not my shoes. It was just my brother standing next to the bike while I took a picture after finishing assembly.

I do need another pair of shoes for riding though. When I am not wearing dress shoes for work I am generally wearing sandals or boat shoes. I have some running shoes I can use for it if I need to but I would prefer to get something else entirely? Any suggestions? I am not looking for a full on motorcycle boot because I want something that I can normally wear with jeans even if I am not riding.

Planing a Rally Raid 5L auxiliary tank, backordered until June (How dare they not have the shiny toys I want when I want them!!!!). Plastic, sits exactly where exhaust canister sits but on other side. Range is now around 150 miles. The tank will bump that to around 215 which is a bit more comforting when I'm in BFE and 60 miles from the nearest paved anything.

I have a few aftermarket guards on the bottom to protect stuff now, might add one for the rear rotor.

I have to do something about the weak head light. Fine on the mellow local fire roads I already know like the back of my hand. Not awesome in BFE when you're relying solely on the GPS and fuel capacity to not die in the desert. OTS kits are stupid expensive. Like we did with the T25 cars, I want to build my own compact LED flamethrowers.
