tl;dr

One day you'll learn that it's not always about speed.
Except, neither car mentioned in OP was a "muscle car" in the classic definition. Corvette doesn't classify (it never did, IMHO) because of price and IRS. F-Body never classified because it was a PONY Car, along with the Mustang.

Btw, "Most of our miatas will beat the pants off any muscle car it comes up against straight line" is a VERY dangerous and ignorant thing to say... Kinda like saying "my bone stock Mazdaspeed6 will demolish every honda civic on the street."

I know a bunch of people who would argue the camaro distinction, but the vette definitely was NEVER a muscle car.

The F-body is a pony car.

The pony car classification was applied to all versions of these nameplates, from the base economy models, as well as models with more equipment, features, or the "muscle" performance models.[23] The intention of these performance models and factory support in racing was on developing a competitive marketing image for their pony cars.[24] The automaker's marketing department's strategy was to promote a perception of these as "sports-type" muscle and performance to promote sales. The competition between the manufacturers was so fierce that the Trans-Am Series from 1966 to 1972 is described as "The Pony Car Wars".[25]
The Mustang, Camaro, Thunderbird, Barracuda, AMC Javelin, etc were all classified as Pony Cars. My long time understanding is most of these cars were designed for a specific race circuit and intended to be more affordable car, even with some 'muscle' under the hood ie 396 cubic inch and larger motors.

I just said "muscle car" meaning V8 car...I forgot I am on properdefinitionpolice.net so I should have been more specific...sorry.
To clean things up I have owned many V8 cars such as a 1988 Trans AM GTA that I built a mild 350 for, and I had a 1971 Pontiac Lemans that had a pretty healthy Olds 350 in it. I had a pile of cars like those and I sold everything. A few of my friends still have their high school cars, such as a 1970 El Camino SS, a '74 AMC Javelin SST, '65 Mustang fastback, and a '70 Chevelle SS to name a few. I bought my Miata cause it is light, is great on gas, and is easily and cheaply modded to go fast. My friends and I still go to the drag strip every once in a while, but we just have fun. I appreciate their old muscle because of what it is, a true American classic with a ***** to the walls American V8. I like the style of that time period and love seeing cars like that that are still on the road. They appreciate my car because they know there was a time when it ran 16's in the 1/4 and now it runs 13's and gets better fuel mileage than it did stock. Since they see what it came from to what it is now, it's accepted. That and I think because it's RWD.
That being said...

Corvettes have always been sports cars.
