God, that brings up two points:

1.) Remakes of pre-90s children's shows NEVER work. Think Ninja Turtles, Transformers (has anyone SEEN that new crap being passed off as Transformers), Loony Toons, etc.

2.) Dora the Explorer:
Fence. River. FREEDOM! Fence. River. FREEDOM! Fence. River. FREEDOM!
That's alls I gots to say about that.

Dora has never tickled my loins. The show is not educational at all nor is it entertaining. I hate the backpack song(cause I used to watch my cousins and they would scream PACKPACK, PACKPACK!) Also, when I was on spring break a few years ago, I turned on nickelodeon to waste time while I was hung over. Dora was on talking about 3 toed sloths. Apparently they make the sound of "EEE, EEE". Folks, the only sounds they make is the rustling of leaves, thud of falling out of said tree, and crunching of bone when a leopard gets them.

Whatever happened to the cartoons that didn't care about anything but entertainment? Gimme some good ol' spoongebob.

The Wiggles makes me want to be violent, like smashing adorible puppies with a sledge. Dora is deal-with-able, I watch Spongebob by choice. Ive noticed alot of childrens shows have some hidden adult type humor, Spongebob is one of those shows.

Joe, that last post made me laugh. You captured perfectly the particular hell that is children's programming (in every sense of the word).

I want you to know that I had a sleeping chihuahua on my lap when I read that, and he is now in a corner, shivering in terror as a result of the raucous laughter which that caused..

Dora is kinda borderline between shows that might teach a few basic concepts (shapes, numbers) to the 2 year old set, and shows that include just enough superficial multiculturalism to convince parents and the FCC they are basically the second-coming of Sesame Street and deserve completely unobstructed access to our children and our pocketbooks. I cannot count the amount of Dora merchandise in this damn house.

I can almost halfway tolerate the backpack song. The map song, on the other hand, makes me want to get in my car, drive nonstop all the way to the home of Mark Weiner at 102 West Ln. in Stamford Connecticut, go into the house in the early hours of the night, and beat him to death with my fucking crutches while his wife Sandra and their three children look on in horror.

For those of you who don't have small children, the map song goes as follows:I'm not exaggerating.



Honestly, I can deal with being educated while also being entertained. Were it not for Mr. Rogers' mailman delivering those short documentary films to stick into Picture-Picture, I'd never have known how kazoos are made, how crayons are made, how fortune cookies are made, how sneakers are made (pre-sweatshop version), etc.

I just can't stand the repetitiveness of this Dora stuff.


So I have the Conjunction Junction guy up there for a month and nobody comments, now we've got "Sniper, no Sniping" for all of about 12 hours and it's celebrity. :D


Unfortunately, I don't think we're quite ready for Schoolhouse Rock just yet, but I'll be keeping that ace up my sleeve. OTOH, since I've been here I have exposed the family to the miracle of bittorrent and the nearly infinite supply of old, forgotten media to which it is a gateway. The idea that you can download something off the computer onto a DVD and watch it on the TV is still settling in with them. They'll fully grasp how it got onto the computer in the first place it about the same time that Grandma gives up and admits that those nice young fellas from Texas actually did go to the moon.

Anyway, thanks to that miracle we've done some Yogi Bear, some Snagglepuss, and a touch of Jetsons. Somehow the old Hanna-Barbara clan just aren't connecting with her. On the plus side, my sister damn near fainted when I handed her a DVD containing last week's episode of Smallville (08x01) which she missed.

"How is this out on DVD so soon?"

"It isn't."

I miss Captain Kangaroo, and fraggle rock also....

I was watching an episode of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends with my nephew. That show can be absolutely hilarious at times, but I was floored at what I saw in this particular one.

In this episode, all the characters went bowling. At one point, the main character, Mac, is walking through the alley, and in the background standing at the counter were animated versions of The Dude, Walter, and Donny from The Big Lebowski. The sheer awesomeness of that almost made me fall out of my chair!
