Right when you join the Navy, just about any position sounds exciting. Think really really carefully about your choice because you'll be stuck in it for the duration.

If you're really serious about going into the FBI afterward, please reconsider something other than air traffic controller. Pick something that gives as high of a security clearance as possible. Don't sweat the ASVAB/no-nuclear field thing; being a nuke won't really get you a decent security clearance either. Try something like Radioman.

This is probably hard to consider rationally because of the emotions of your new career move. Congrats to that, and try working backwards. Check out some job postings in the FBI/security field and see what kinds of clearances they want applicants to have. Having one gives a huge edge at getting that kind of job.

thats pretty much all it is really, i'm just really excited to go.

my recruiter never told me that i would be e7 in 3-4 years i never said that (for the people that didnt understand my mumbled jumbo.) i said after i was done, which is my first 8-9 years. im not really going for the money anyways. i just want to travel, get the fuck out of the states for once.

honestly guys, ill be straight up, im confident in my abilities. that doesn't mean i'm worried something might happen? im not gloating about my skills, not bragging that i'll be able to take on anything they throw at me with a clear mind the first time. i might get slipped up at some point in boot camp. but what i really should've said was i have indefinite ability to succeed under stress, and i can overcome failure. i want to work with the others, talk to people about their experiences in the navy. i have a lot to learn, and even more to gain from this. im just excited about it.

once again i'm gonna thank all of you for your support!

Bingo. Crypto guys get background checked about 8 ways from sunday though.

kotomile 03-02-2010 05:51 PM

Ain't that the truth. My parents' neighbors freak out when agents show up to ask them questions about me lol.

Sparetire 03-02-2010 06:16 PM

They did that to my Dad LOL. Imagine agents showing up in rural Maine. Not exactly common there.

browning 03-02-2010 07:19 PM

real navy advice. learn what your rate and rank can do for you. like being a gunners mate we had a bunch of empty 3 inch fifty rounds and empty fifty cal ammo boxes. everyone wanted the brass ones which you can trade for favors. cooks have keys to several thousand cases of beer the good steaks fresh hot baked cookies ect...
also when you pull in port our little thing is when would hide officers shit they bought overseas down in the mags they could buy large items we would hold it for them we we got home after coulpe of weeks they would come retrieve it. big bonus favors there.
do your job run your racket have fun. when i was an e2 and e3 my chief would send me places to steal shit for our division coffee donuts tools parts whatever we needed i had the play stupid part when i would get caught to an art form.
the navy is more than a service it's a brother hood you will get to know your division. sadly my ship was used as target practive in 2006 and lies 2100 feet down under outside virginia capes.

Oh they did, did they? WOW OMG!!

BANKS is still in charge of this if he wants.
Tell them to fuckin wait!!!

You've made your mind up already, so whatever shit they come up with, you'd jump like a fish at. Tell them to Fucking Wait.

You and only you will make this decision. Not some "time is running out, better act fast" bullshit. TELL THEM TO FUCKING WAIT.

BANKS, YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF WHEN YOU DO THIS!!! Don't be a fucking retard and do whatever they say!!! Tell them to wait a couple months. Sparetire and kotomile are tossing you gems.

Dude, you scored an 85 on the ASVAB, not only will they suck your dick for that, reacharound is mandatory. Don't waste it on air traffic controller!

kotomile 03-03-2010 05:37 AM

Have you taken the DLAB, banks?

It sounds like he's looking forward to going early..maybe not though?

I got a 94 and I'm in a sweet ass job, signed on for ~3.5 years and got a $40K sign-on bonus, but I'm bored as fuck so...it's all in what you're looking for. That being said I'm more than happy with my position right now considering I'm about to ship off to WP, just keep your eyes open for opportunities all the time and you'll be fine Banks.

kotomile 03-03-2010 01:29 PM

What's your MOS again, KP?

One good thing about Air Traffic Control - civilian ATCs make bank. Throw out your hopes of working for alphabet soup agencies and see how much experience you'd need to get hired as a civilian ATC.

browning 03-03-2010 02:51 PM

navy does not have mos they have rates. a cool job is getting in with the engineers every ship has an awesome fabrication shop if you need it and dont have it they will make it for you.

Pen2_the_penguin 03-03-2010 06:22 PM

Air Force doesnt have an MOS or Rates... there is a AFSC. I iz a 2T251

browning 03-03-2010 06:23 PM

Air Traffic Controlman (AC)

banks japan is no where in your future right now you'll spend the next 12 to 24 months in florida after bootcamp. not bad schooling but the way it works they will have slots availible for YOUR CLASS no.1 student gets first pick then so on if your in the bottom percentile in your class you'll get the shit slot.

Right, KPLAFIN's in the Army though, so he has an MOS. I'm still technically a 35F (Intelligence Analyst) reclassing (cross-rating in Navy terms IIRC) to 35P (Cryptologic Linguist).

In the Navy I'd be a CT2 (E5 is skill level 2 right?) and in the AF I'd be a 1N3__.

I still want to know if you've taken the DLAB, Banks. In the Army, those of us with a GT score higher than whatever-it-was took it at reception before basic. Didn't pass the first time (36 hours awake tends to affect things..) but did well enough the second time around. If you don't like ships and ATC work, you might consider cross-rating down the road, especially if you want to work for NSA/CIA/FBI. Every Cryptologic Technician I've met in the Navy is stationed in GA.

Sounds exactly like my situation, only reason I even regret it just a little bit is because it didn't leave me with enough time to really research and get me the best job, but I'm getting it now anyway, that being said I wouldn't change how I did things for anything, so good luck.

Don't worry, you'll pass, if you don't....well guess what, you will anyway (on paper at least). Your recruiter isn't going to lose a recruit over a couple push-ups, basic will get you where you need to be. I didn't even take a PT test for my recruiter, I was in his office one day doing other paperwork and what not and he was like "How many push ups can you do? how fast can you run two miles?" etc.. and wrote down what I said, lol

Test to determine your ability to learn a new language, it consists of (I believe, I myself didn't take it because I KNOW I suck at learning a foreign language) a completely made up language which you have to "learn" on the spot and I don't know what else from there.
