**SOLD** Murray Riding Mower Lawnmower

Here's a link to my current ad. A dude, very cool, just came and picked up this mower for my asking price. As you can see, the ad is detailed enough that anybody should be able to make a sight-unseen decision to purchase or not. It's a great price, the seller is obviously an English-Primary-Language person who isn't fucking around... basically I answer all 10 most-commonly-asked CL responses, and DUMB IT DOWN so that even the elementary-school educated coon-asses around here shouldn't be able to come up with some bullshit way to waste my time through email... but still I get these kinds of responses:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1347912372

Is this still available and in what condition??

Doyoustillhavethisitem.

This rider lawnmower is a late '90's rear-engine rider, 30" blade, 12hp motor, yes.?

Would it fit in the back of my explorer with the seats down?

Where are you located?

How old is this mower? does it have any rust.

What brand is this mower?

Why are you saleing this item.

I am not frum nigeria is this still avaleable

Trade for fishing gear? I have pots and nets for everything.

Why does the seat look crooked?

How many miles on this mower?

I am not shitting you, these are just the good ones, or ones I have repeats of. I got about 30 emails in 48hours, 2 guys who said they were "In the car and on the way" who never showed and haven't returned my calls, and about a dozen people who said "I'll take it, but not until Friday, can you hold it?"

WHAT IN THE NAME OF SWEET BABY JESUS IN A TUXEDO SHIRT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!

18psi 09-17-2012 04:14 PM

I'm more surprised that you are in shock over this than anything else.

LOL

I just sold a 2000 Honda Accord for my brother in law a few weeks ago. At $2500 asking, my email box damn near shut down Yahoo mail lolol. Some of them I didn't even know wtf they were asking me....

The "I am not a nigerian prince" one takes the cake though:laugh:

viperormiata 09-17-2012 04:16 PM

still for sale?

pusha 09-17-2012 04:20 PM

I'm surprised no one offered to trade you an X-Box.

y8s 09-17-2012 04:51 PM

turns out even stupid people can get access to the internutz.

Joe Perez 09-17-2012 05:22 PM

I'm interested in buying this mower, but I don't own a car. Can you deliver it to my house? I'm located in northen Wisconsin. Also, both of my arms had to be amputated after I was in a serious fire last year, so I can't operate the mower myself. Would you be willing to come to my house every other weekend and mow the lawn for me? I don't have any money, but I can give you a large and extremely rare collection of beanie-babies in return.

PS: I am not from Nigeria.

I just got this response... this is his first response, not a reply to my email. Every CL ad I put out lately has this exact response within the theme:

the condition of the item and i will love to make an instant purchase.
I will be mailing (overnight) a certified check from my account to
cover the cost, while you hold item on my behalf, am willing to give
an extra $40 for you to hold item till you receive payment. Once you
have payment, I will have my handler come for pickup at your place as
soon as check clears your bank. I will be needing the following
information to issue out the payment . .

1.Name to be on the check
2.Home Address
3.Telephone

** Please note that the payment will be mailed overnight via the
courier to your address and its bound to delivered within 2 to 3 days.
I have taken a closer look at the item and am very satisfied i really
need this and would appreciates that you help hold this for me till

as am definitely buying it from you. Hope to hear from you ASAP

Sincerely

James Jatt

pusha 09-17-2012 06:17 PM

send him Slide_Ruler's information

18psi 09-17-2012 06:18 PM

You have GOT to go along with it and post results.

This might get fun.

Troll him back or this thread is useless.

rharris19 09-17-2012 06:20 PM

I get that a lot as well. I have always wanted to put something up for sale just to see how it all works with those guys.

The guys over at 419eater.com have some interesting scambaiting stories.

karter74 09-17-2012 06:54 PM

I have experienced all of this. While Craigslist is a decent enough place to browse for things, the amount of idiots out there is just astonishing.

I really want to be thankful for all the advances in modern medicine, but seriously, we really need to let natural selection weed out the herd a little more.

<rant> If people want to drive without seatbelts, let them!!! If they're too stupid to help themselves in the name of safety, who are we to force them??</rant>

Joe Perez 09-17-2012 06:56 PM

Indeed.

Agree to his terms, and require that the $40 be sent via PayPal while you await the receipt of the forged check. Give him a bogus address to mail the check to- you won't be needing it. Don't make up a false address, just pick some address at random out of the phone book- this way it won't immediately be returned by the delivery service.

Tell the scammer that the check arrived and cleared, and that they can come pick up the mower. In the mean time, generate a forged email claiming to be from your bank's fraud department, informing you that the check you "deposited" was bogus, and threatening you with a fraud charge.

When the "handler" asks where to pick up the mower, give him the address of a location on-base which is mappable via google maps but which would be unreachable by an unescorted civilian. Eg: one must pass through a manned checkpoint to reach it.

After the buyer complains that the address you gave him is inaccessable, apologize profusely and claim that there was some mixup at the checkpoint, and that you'll make sure he has the proper credentials to get in.

After he complains the second time (presupposing he's not in the brig yet), reveal the fraud letter from the bank, and threaten him with physical violence. This will seem more credible than the average e-thugging, given his experiances on the base.

Etc.

jacob300zx 09-17-2012 10:08 PM

I always send them the name and address of the Chief of Police to make the check out to :)

I will have never had more dealings with idiots than when I post a craigslist add. I posted a WTB add for old dirt bikes a couple of months ago and posted sample pictures hoping some divorced wife would call me about her ex's dirt bike. I had about 15 people call me about buying my dirt bike WTF! The add said Wanted To Buy in the title and body.

I had one kid about 8 years old that called me twice in a row, I finally got pissed and said, "look quit bothering me kid I have no dirt bikes for sale." and hung up. The kids Dad called back and said he was trying to teach his son how to negotiate...I told him to teach him how the read first as it was a wtb add lol.

I'll take that as a no. :). Good luck

I was trying to buy an ipod on CL for a while there. I had 4 different people who I arranged meetings with to buy a unit from and they always came up with an excuse not to sell it. I get "I have to work late tonight" a lot, I guess I dont understand what's the point of putting things for sale then being completely unwilling to actually sell said item. One listed one at $90, then tried to increase the price on me because he didn't look up what it was worth

mgeoffriau 09-18-2012 09:48 AM

Yesterday evening, not Craigslist but Armslist. Guy listed an $80 Rossi .22 revolver plus a couple bricks of .22 ammo. Figured it was worth $80. Agreed on time and place to meet. I arrived on time. Waited 30 minutes, no show, guy won't respond to calls, texts, or emails. I went home. 3 hours later, I ignored his phone call.

Braineack 09-18-2012 09:53 AM

lol. I'm uncomfortable meeting people selling ipods and tile saws on CL meeting in public places, let alone a cheap ass gun :)

but yeah, people are sketchy. I hate people.

ThatGuy85 09-18-2012 10:30 AM

I've had the same experience lately. Tryin to sell my old TV:

Sceptre 37" HDTV

Admittedly, the price is a little high. I expected someone to offer 100, 150. Nope.

Some guy emails me right off the bat "offring 35 for it"

I email him back: "You're joking, right?"

"i cn go up to 50...."

I'm with Braineack. I hate people.

Saml01 09-18-2012 10:41 AM

The issue with selling on craigslist besides all the scammers and flakes is that when you do find someone who wants to deal they think they are one of the Pawn Stars. Anything you quote in the ad they take 50% off without considering the price; almost like a default. I assume because so many people high ball their asking prices. However, if you do high ball your price and you have the patience you may just find someone dumb enough to buy it.

Yeah, that thought has crossed my mind. But I'm pretty wary, and always well-armed.

Stick with it. I sold our old Olevia 32" LCD for $185 a few weeks back. It took a long time, but after wading through tons of CL flakes (including one guy who would email me every week with updated pricing from Target for 32" LCD's in an effort to talk me down -- my standard response was "That sounds like a good deal! You should go for it!"), I got one very grateful buyer who had been dealing with the same stupidity on the other end. She was very happy to get a clean, functional TV that wasn't missing a remote, or needed an "easy repair", and that I communicated clearly and promptly to her inquiries. She didn't even try to bargain with me.

Braineack 09-18-2012 11:01 AM

I was able to sell a couch and a set of pendants with a matching chandellier without any issue as well. That only restored little faith.

no one seems to want my cabinet knobs/pull/handles however :(

elesjuan 09-18-2012 11:04 AM

Sam-

I am wanting mower.

Is available?
Can I fit on my 1980 50cc honda scooter?
What is your bottom dollar?

"What is your bottom dollar?" is the question that pisses me off the most. I put in the ad the fucking price and that I'm not interested in any trades, yet continue to get "bottom dollar" and "trade you an xbox" emails.

y8s 09-18-2012 11:16 AM

I posted a while back about the person who came to my house and agreed to buy an item and as I was helping her carry it out to the car, she told me she didn't have any money on her and that she would go to the 7-11 ATM and get cash (WITH THE ITEM IN THE CAR!) and come back and pay me.

I told her "haha no you will go without the item in your car".

She went, took forever (I expected no return) and then came back with less money than we agreed to sell the item for because her account was tapped.

what the fuck is wrong with people?

elesjuan 09-18-2012 11:19 AM

I forgot to mention flagging, JESUS!!

Spent 6 months of reposting my Mazdaspeed6 on CL two or three times a day because some jerkoff kept flagging it for removal.

Braineack 09-18-2012 11:34 AM

haha. i had a similar experience. Sold a stove, couple came without any money and were shocked when we wouldnt take a personal check.

all my CL ads say cash only at least three times in them.

they wanted to do the same thing (load it up first then go to bank), then tried to get the cost reduce because the oven was a little dirty inside and require cleaning. but they came back with the correct amount.

rleete 09-18-2012 12:22 PM

Try giving away something for free. That REALLY brings out the flakes. No shows, but repeat callers are the worst. Then there are the people asking you to hold the item (no, dumbass, I'm trying to get rid of it, not store it for you), or want you to deliver it.

Look doofus, it's a loveseat. I took pics so you could see the color and condition. It's in good shape, and I will help you load it. It's FREE. What the hell more do you want?

Joe Perez 09-18-2012 12:28 PM

Reminds me of the cinder blocks ad. Classic.

rleete 09-18-2012 12:36 PM

Yeah, that one was good.

mgeoffriau 09-18-2012 12:46 PM

Another good experience: I listed a digital camera on CL. Guy emails and says he wants it. But he lives 25 minutes on the other side of town. And works from 8 AM to 9 PM. And never comes over to my side of town. And is out of town on the weekends. And doesn't want to use his lunchbreak to come pick it up. But he REALLY wants the camera.

After about a dozen emails in which I tried to accommodate his schedule and arrangements, I finally said, "Listen, I understand you want it, but every attempt I've made to schedule a time and place hasn't worked. If you want the camera, let me know when you can pick it up. Otherwise, I'm not willing to drive 40 miles round trip and waste gas and time to sell a $100 camera."

His response:

"Sounds to me like you're not that motivated to sell your camera. Next time, why don't you say that up front instead of giving me the runaround and wasting my time."

He was kind of right, I guess. I wasn't that motivated to sell the camera.

Braineack 09-18-2012 12:48 PM

I just dont even waste my time with people.

im still loling at "i dont want to lowball you, but here's a lowball offer"

pusha 09-18-2012 01:55 PM

I once listed a set of factory Miata seats (NA) for $50 on CL. It took about three days to finally set up a meet with this older guy who drove over to Gainesville from Jacksonville (60 mi or so) to pick them up. When I met with him, he had the audacity to ask me "so now that they're on the back of your truck, will you take $20 for the pair?" I didn't say a word and simply closed my tailgate and drove away while he kept yelling at me that he was just kidding, blah blah. He spent the next hour or so calling me and leaving me VMs that went from apologetic to threatening. I would have loved for him to put a hand on me or something while I was walking to my truck's door. My Glock 29 SF has a nasty habit of enlarging eyeballs.

Braineack 09-18-2012 02:04 PM

he might have smudged your j.crew lobster pants.

pusha 09-18-2012 02:09 PM

I buy my Nantucket Reds from Murray's Toggery, not J Crew. I honestly don't own a single J Crew item.

pusha 09-18-2012 02:11 PM

Oh, it seems most of y'all get emails? I don't think I've ever gotten a real offer via e-mail. Do you guys list your phone info as well or no?

elesjuan 09-18-2012 02:14 PM

Fuck no I don't put my phone number on CL...

rleete 09-18-2012 02:22 PM

I put my number on there when I want a quick sale or something is free. I won't put my address, though.

Braineack 09-18-2012 02:22 PM

yeah, whats with the use of texts and CL? I hate that. I hate giving out my number even after we arranged a meeting.

mgeoffriau 09-18-2012 02:38 PM

If I have ever put a number, it's my Google Voice number. I don't use my real number with CL stuff.

elesjuan 09-18-2012 02:38 PM

Yeah, and "swinging by my place to look/pickup item" is also a big effing no no. Does that bother anyone else when someone wants to come pick it up? I'll meet them somewhere close, but not at my house.

Originally Posted by mgeoffriau (Post 928279)

I made the mistake of letting my google voice number "go" when it integrated into my sprint account.. :(

Landrew 09-18-2012 03:34 PM

I had a great cross border experience.

I was doing a US/CANADA craigslist search for a heavier flywheel and also a steering damper for my YZ450F motocross bike. Found an add from the US where the guy had a bike for sale with those parts already on it. He replied and said he would take the parts off and put back the stock items so he could still sell his bike and I could grab the goodies. They were worth over $500. He was deep south and I'm in Canada. PayPal'd and I received them a short bit later. Great guy and a good deal for both of us.
That is probably a rare example.

pusha 09-18-2012 03:35 PM

people like us are out there, just few and far between

rleete 09-18-2012 05:39 PM

What's the problem with people coming out to pick things up? I've sold or given away a whole garage full of crap over the years, and never had a single problem. I live in a house in a fairly quiet suburban neighborhood. I't's not like it's a secret location or anything. I've had people show up in rusty, clapped out pickups looking like crack heads, and they paid and left. I don't invite them in to tour the place.

I've had people offer to pay for stuff I'm giving away for free. I always refuse, as I feel that defeats the whole "free" thing. One lady, who I gave a set of aluminum awnings to, insisted I take some money, as I could have gotten something for scrap. I declined. The next week my wife found an envelope in the mailbox with 15 (or so, I forget the number) bucks inside. I'm sure she came back and left it.

mgeoffriau 09-18-2012 05:43 PM

Yeah, I let people come to the house to pick stuff up. Cool toys are kept out of site. We lock our doors. We have a dog. I'm well-armed. It's a calculated risk, I guess.

I always meet people at well-lit gas stations where I know the transaction will take place in view of the CCTV cameras, just in case. Also, I sell a lot of car parts and stuff so my "clientele" are often undesirables.

Stein 09-18-2012 11:37 PM

I've sold three and bought seven Miatas plus a couple of other cars on CL without issue. I guess it depends on where you live.

I did have my wife's old 2004 Protege for sale for $2000 firm. I explicitly said in the ad that it was very well priced and if you even hint at offering less I will hang up immediately. I had an offer of $1950 because "that's all he had" and I hung up. Guy called me several times immediately after that but I never answered. I guess he found another $50 but he missed out. It sold 15 minutes later for asking. Overall, my experiences in the Midwest have been good.

pusha 09-18-2012 11:42 PM

Is $2000 the going rate for 2004 protégés?

I refreshed my CL ads last night and the bengal kitten lady sent me another offer. It contains possibly the funniest possible misspelling of the word "expensive."

Bingo. I just don't trust people. At all. Don't have a giant garage to hide all my toys in and would rather not take the risk. Can't be home all the time.

Bluebook on my 2000 Protege is $2200 and I probably wouldn't take a dime less for it even with the hood missing clear coat and 250,000 miles!

Braineack 09-19-2012 10:19 AM

I have something on CL right now. at 2am I got ten spam emails from the same person, very annoyings.

18psi 09-19-2012 10:20 AM

they are very expenis furbabies br0

Braineack 09-19-2012 10:25 AM

I would totally trade my 2 tires for a Bengal furbaby.

mgeoffriau 09-19-2012 10:57 AM

I've been debating between two possible replies to the bengal lady.

1. "I'm tempted by your offer, but I'm not sure. Are the kittens tender?"

2. "Sorry, not interested, we're vegetarians."
