Just bought a new guitar (Epiphone Les Paul Ultra), now my wall is finally full. For those of you who are interested in my crazy project I started a web page on it this morning. Now all I have to do is learn how to play the guitar, learn how to play the bass, learn how to play the drums, and learn how to use recording studio software <G>. BUT, I am definitely closer than I was 7 months ago when I started planning all of this.

Now back to the garage - I've got stuck downpipe nuts to deal with!!!

Awesome, as in "Hey guy, that's pretty innovative, I applaud your methods". I've got both an electric set and acoustic set myself.

 

I like it. Same basic appeal as a $250 ghettocharger setup.

 

In 1982 my drum set would have cost $30,000 and you would have been creaming your shorts. It all depends on how you look at it. I happen to think it is pretty cool in the way that a Miata with a DIY turbo is cool. Build something for $5K that will spank the hell out of a new Vette. I built an electronic drumset with an endless supply of tones for less than $60. The only drawback (hmmm, I should put something about this on the web page) is that it cannot sense differences in pressure. Hitting it hard as hell gives the same sound as hitting it very lightly. BUT, I can pick it up with one hand and move it around the room. Try doing that with a full set of drums <G>.

 

Where did I say I was a good musician? <G>

I suck, but I am practicing every day so that I won't suck quite as much. Maybe in a few months I will move up to just being horrible.

Looks pretty good! I would recommend that you get some foam and bass traps set up to deaden the echo and resonance in that room. For software, I grew up using Reason for synthetic linked with Sonar for live recording, but if you're just starting off, I would have rather started with Ableton Live which is very powerful. You will be spending a lot of time learning the software, which isn't exactly a bowl of cherries. IMO Reason is the easiest to learn to use, and is pretty powerful, although it doesn't do live recording. A keyboard is essential for using any types of recording software, so I would first start there. I also don't see any recording equipment in the picture. You should be able to find a decent 4 channel mixer with a few cables online or at a store for pretty cheap. Then you need a few microphones. Starting off, just get 1 condenser mic and 1 dynamic mic. Once you get a drumset - things will get VERY complicated. Otherwise, don't get too caught up in all the equipment and make sure you're spending more time enjoying playing. That's why i like my plain ol acoustic

The monitor was an lcd screen I found at the dump, needed a new cold cathode light, had an extra from some custom case lighting that I never used.

 

I used to run/own/operate a production studio for years. I just moved and am putting together my home setup.

If anyone has acoustics or audio engineering questions I might be able to help.

I also have a shitload of bass traps that i'd sell for cheap if anyone wants them.

And roadcases.

And a GML 8304.

And a DPA 4060 mic.

And a Neumann UM57 refurbished by SPA.

How else would you do it? Learn to play an instrument before you actually own one? Wonder if I can rent a guitar <G>?

I can tell I have been lazy and not practicing because the fingernails on my left hand have grown out (and I have a new DP and IC installed in the MSM <G>)...
