The new to me toy truck.

2005 Diesel Excursion
101k on it.
6.0 Power Stroke
Eddie Bauer

From Texas. Fully loaded. Looks like it lived a semi rough life. Not perfect as there is some cosmetic stuff that needs fixing. ie: driver side mirror slight crack and front grill is cracked in one spot.

I am still looking for a block heater cable (fingers crossed).

Some pics.

What kind of mileage did you get? What did you pay? Any plans for a lift?

hustler 11-18-2011 03:19 PM

I'm looking for one of those with a Cummins+Allison swap.

Miater 11-18-2011 03:29 PM

If Im not mistaken the block heater will be close to one of the tow hooks in the front. Even tho its from Texas, alot of them came with that option. EB edition im not sure of..

Why the hate on the 6.0.

Not like its the first year of it. lol

I've been looking for an 05 gasser at a reasonable price... I'm not touching the 6.0.

You don't tow anything do you Rick? Why not get the gas model. Much less expensive to buy and maintain.

Man, my v10 was brutal on fuel. However I did mostly inner city driving with it. On the highway it was ok. Right now with the 6.0 I am starting to wonder if the fuel gauge is stuck on (F) :) Thing is awesome so far on diesel.

My gas one was really nice I thought.
http://www.lolsorry.com/gallery/main...g2_itemId=5680

The gasser lacked heated seats and leather and all the buttons on the steering wheel. I added nav, tvs, back up camera and all Orion system.

I drove it for a year and a bit and sold it for every cent I had into it.

It also sold with around 150,000 KM on it, the new one which is diesel sites at 101,000.

As of now, not towing anything. I have a small 10 foot open trailer generally used for various stuff... dump runs during a reno, or yard clean up etc. So no serious towing at all. My first X was bought with the idea I would tow 1 of the mustangs to the track. Sold the mustangs as well and never once towed them.

As for maintenance. I have no idea what I am up against to be honest. Is it costly? Which part is costly?

I did look at other local gas X's but alot were out of service police trucks that were beat to piss, missing interior parts and or had mangled exteriors. This new X i got was a pretty good deal IMO and condition is awesome. Will need 4 new tires by next year.

Injectors, turbochargers, PCMs, you name it. They are notorious for having major component failures on a regular basis. The 6.0 is garbage. Every single year of it was garbage.

My honest, no-BS advice is to sell that truck as soon as you humanly can. You couldn't pay me to own/use a 6.0PSD. Sell it and buy a gas Excursion or a Suburban or a 7.3 Excursion or a Fiat Pinto, or honestly anything that doesn't involve you owning a 6.0/6.4 PSD.

My buddy has had a 7.3 Excursion for around 200k miles. They were real nice. His dad has a 6.0 F350 that's been fairly reliable also. Hope yours ends up being as reliable. Do you actually need the 8 passenger capacity? If not, the diesel liberty is pretty sweet!

Really, most of the reading I did on the powerstroke forums said the 2003 year of the International 6.0 was brutal but by 2005 most of the issues were sorted out and not to be concerned. I am not really concerned myself as it is a low mileage truck with 3 year 60k warranty, bumper to bumper including coverage of injectors, turbo, ball joints etc.

I would never go back to gas, ever in an X unless i had to or had a great deal. My gas X was gutless compared to the diesel.

I will certainly update if anything goes bad with it and post pics of it at the dealership getting repaired. On the 4th year the pics will be from the scrap yard :fawk:

Dont really need the 8 passenger room, but love being able to fill it up. Nothing like needing a truck when you dont have one.

AS for reliability. The guys I know here locally all say to maintain it and it will be fine, that they have had no issues and most if not all things were covered by warranty on the super duties when they first got it. One guy is now rocking 350k on his. I hope it is reliable as well, warranty makes me feel better. My wifes brand new Jeep leaked 1 month after having it... shit happens, warranty can be good.

Ben 11-21-2011 07:50 PM

Power wise, the 6.0 PSD is a joy, but there's a lot higher cost of ownership as compared to the gasser. Look into disabling the EGR system and head studs. Also, it has a variable vane turbo that likes to get crusty with soot and jam up. Try to romp on it at least one time per drive cycle to help keep the turbo vanes clean.

Opti 11-22-2011 12:31 AM

Savington nailed it the 6.0s are horrible. When I worked as a tire tech in small podunk town, everyone drove a truck and a ton of people had 6.0 fords. We normally had at least 1 in the shop for something big. Did injectors all the time.

At first we only had 1 desiel mechanic and the others vowed they would never touch them after about 3 months of seeing the other tech flag so many hours all the mechanics started working on diesels.

Problem with a ford diese,l post 7.3 is parts and labor is high. I think on the trucks, just a serp belt is like 2.4 hours. Had a truck come in for a turbo failure, refered him to the dealer, talked to him later and he said they had to pull the cab for a turbo swap, dont remeber the vintage or what diesel it was though.

The only big diesel guys I know around here (alot of them) that drive fords have 7.3s.

Quality Control Bot 11-22-2011 10:40 PM

I think like all things online, you hear more bad stories than good. I read up on the 7.3 and heard their trans were brutal. I hear the 6.0s like to fail. I hear Miatas are noisy as shit and small and that mustangs are owned by gays. :p

I wont tow often or much, but when i do it will likely be a race car or boat or a trailer full of garbage... (latter is most likely).

I have warranty. Thats all I will say for now. If it breaks i hope its within that time period. Prefer it not to ever break.

Did the first oil change on it today. Stickler of having warranty is I need legit oil changes, none of this at home stuff which is lame but was expected.

Next I will have the trans, tcase, diffs done and then go from there.

Gonna get a Edge Insight for it as well.

Savington 11-23-2011 09:27 PM

FoMoCo sued Navistar over the warranty claims on 6.0 trucks. The internet isn't always perfect, but sometimes the things you hear about online are every bit as bad as they are claimed to be.

If you offered that truck to me 100% free of charge, with the warranty you've got, I wouldn't take it. That should give you an idea of what I think it's worth. Sell it ASAP.

Opti 11-23-2011 09:35 PM

Agreed^

But best of luck to you
