New MR2?

This sure does beat the hell out of any scion

http://www.channel4.com/4car/gl/gallery/spy+shot/982/

miatamania 11-28-2007 10:08 AM

All new(er) Mr2s have been ugly.

However, I bet it'd look sweet in a hardtop.

mazda/nissan 11-28-2007 10:48 AM

its still prettier than any of the scions. I personally think it was a bad idea to replace mr2's and celica's with scions :barf:

samnavy 11-28-2007 11:01 AM

Looks like an AudiTT with a little Boxster thrown in for flavor.

Braineack 11-28-2007 11:04 AM

looks like the sam damn thing the came out with that didn't sell and they stopped making.....now with a flared fenders :td:

Saml01 11-28-2007 01:13 PM

Guys thats a test mule, those fender flares are just disguise. My money is on the fact that they are just testing a new platform not a car even close to production or concept yet.

Newbsauce 11-28-2007 01:43 PM

I like how it says they are addressing the lack of space issue in the MR2. It would be nice if they would address some of the more pressing issues w/ the MR2.. like the fact that the headlights and taillights are so massive they occupy 90% of the body.

+1

When they do mule testing they usually don't add massive body panels on both sides.

Zabac 11-28-2007 01:57 PM

the scions were not meant at all to replace the celica or the MR2...the scions are more of a marketing strategy than anything...obviously its working really well, even better than toyota had anticipated, tis working so well that within the next 10 years all toyotas are going to pure pricing
and anticipate the scion line up to grow to more cars, maybe even a 4 door Tc...btw, anyone seen the new Tc due soon? NOICE rice

Braineack 11-28-2007 01:59 PM

regarless of the body paneling it looks like the same car, which again didn't sell at all. at least its not as ugly as the solstice.

Zabac 11-28-2007 02:03 PM

lolz, got that right...
i dont think thats even a recent photo, looks like development of previous MR2

SamS 11-28-2007 02:13 PM

possibly an eventual replacement for the current MR2, which will be discontinued in the crucial U.S. market next year.
The last MR2 sold in the U.S. market was discontinued in 2005, which dates the pictures and article to 2004.

Been around test mules recently? My dad is a chief engineer at a car company I won't name, to avoid accusations of bias, so we had quite a number of test mules at home when I was a kid. They most certainly do add massive body panels to give whatever's underneath a presentable skin. For example: my dad once brought home a V8-powered, rwd coupe under the elongated (by 6 inches ) skin of an existing V6 fwd coupe. Some very clever bodywork.

Different strokes for different folks, apparently. It's gorgeous in my eyes. Shame Franz left GM. Guess he couldn't handle the winters ;)

Regardless, this is an outdated article featuring outdated pictures of a test mule for a car that either never happened or hasn't made it out yet.

Ben 11-28-2007 02:33 PM

OMG dude, I'm pretty sure I know both what the rwd v8 and fwd v6 were, and that's just funny.

I was talking about the shots we saw. Thats only when they want us to see the car, the real mule shots we rarely get.

anyone who's modeled a GM in the past 20 years should be shot twice. Expections; the corvette, Cadillac, & Saab. that's about it.

Ben 11-28-2007 02:52 PM

ahh, I figured it was that one that was literally built around your ass :)
which would have been HILARIOUS dressed up as a FWD
Yeah, and Americans just hate RWD V8 coupes :gay:

I gotta admit: your Nissan is pretty sexy :td:

Braineack 11-28-2007 03:24 PM

It doesn't look like my vagina ate and digested it and then pooped it out as a car, so I'm OK with it.

i didn't realize you had such a boner for shitty ugly cheap ass crap cars.

I guess instead of paying 15k for my Altima that has had two things fail in 120K and doesn't make me gag, I should have bought a 2000 Sunfire, Caliver, Prizim, Century, Lumina, Malibu, Alero, Intrigue, Grand Am, or a Saturn-L.......hell no.

I guess should have kept driving the Trans sport to save myself embarrassment:

http://www.lakemurrayproperty.com/ca...ans/tsse02.jpg

I'm kicking myself now, cause that is one sexy piece of pie.

mazda/nissan 11-28-2007 03:42 PM

I never minded the Alero, Intrigue, or Grand Am, and the Malibu is equally boring when compared to an Altima. Like I said earlier, to each his own. I also think the styling in GM has grown leaps and bound in recent years, but I guess you'd disagree.

Hey, it sold well for its day.

glorydays 11-28-2007 03:48 PM

that mr2 just looks like some company's one off widebody kit. i think if another mr2 comes out, it should definately be hardtop and turbo/supercharged. scion needs a cheap FR model if they are trying to keep up with the kids. perferably with a uber long wheelbase, rolled fenders, and stretched tires. jd/adm ftw!

Braineack 11-28-2007 03:49 PM

It's not like I like my altima....I've been waiting for someone to t-bone me and I stop short at red lights all the time....what does my new DD must not have, cheap plastic interiors that squeak with every bump.

Zabac 11-28-2007 03:59 PM

holy cow, all this hatred...wow

Ben 11-28-2007 03:59 PM

IMO, one of GM's cool but unsung recent attempts was the Oldsmobile Aurora, styled after the early Toronado. It's a very comfy car, quiet and fairly stiff chassis, but still nice and plush. Had a front wheel drive 4.0 V8 that it shared with Caddy.

Braineack 11-28-2007 04:02 PM

neighbor had one after trading in an Eldorado, I much preferred the caddy. I did like our '99 SCed Buick Regal, MUCH more than our similar '98 Pontiac Grand Prix. I almost traded my dad my altima for it before he sold it for his bimmer.

I liked it quite a bit. The driver seating position was a bit off though. It had me sitting at an angle to the steering wheel a bit, but not as badly as in a Viper.

i have nothing against ben or his opinion, no personal attacks were made. i do however hate boner-inverting cars.

I loved the Eldorados, sweet cars. Stupid Caddy reliability and insane price points for repair.

list of people i hate:

Canadians
Californians
Liberals
Hippies
White Supremacists
Black Supremacists
Blacks
Gays
Gay Cowboys
Jews, Asians, Indians, French, Elderly, Smelly, Yuppies.

pretty much in that order. There's a reason stereotypes exist.

You ever see a convertible 2 door eldorado?

I have an have pics to prove it. 1 of 50 custom made.

Loki047 11-28-2007 04:52 PM

Shiiiet Im a jewish smelly yuppie.

But on another note normal cowboys are ok?

Braineack 11-28-2007 04:52 PM

each has their own thing they need to worry about, since jew was used for example, one would only have to worry about locking up thier valuables from me to steal out of jealously.....although, it would be very unjew like to have liquid assets sitting around for people like me to steal.

Cowboys are OG son....don't front.

i also forgot race traiders

I wasn't aware that the Scion line replaced the MR2-S. I was more under the impression that the MR2-S didn't sell. The celica had been on a downward spiral for a decade.. The last gen really reminded me of a non-turbo 2g eclipse.. something all the high school girls wanted.

The scion line, however, has probably been one of the best things Toyota has done in years.. The cars sell, and sell well.

mazda/nissan 11-28-2007 08:44 PM

yeah, but their still fugly :dunno:

Zabac 11-28-2007 08:45 PM

no the scion brand is purely an attemp of toyota to market/target the younger generation and it is very succesful, it was not meant to replace neither mr2 nor celica...
the scion line up is still toyota in EU and asia, its just scion here in the US
reason toyota decided to roll on this is because in their extensive market research they concluded that most younger folks simply didnt like toyota because "thats what their parents drive" so the scion was born
it makes sense and toyota also used it to approach the pure pricing way of selling and that has proven very effective as well among this young generation, and in some years they will apply this concept to the rest of the toyota brand, not to lexus however since there is tremendous mark up there
new toyotas and scions have very low mark up
sorry, dont mean to preach, im just very informed with what goes on with toyota and i feel the need to share with my fellow MTnetters

mazda/nissan 11-28-2007 08:50 PM

so do you disagree that they aren't fugly? i'll bitch slap you if you think their hotness :slap:

Zabac 11-28-2007 09:06 PM

i don't think so, but you're welcome to your opinion. I have owned a xA and tC..

i kinda thought the tC was hot.. with the 19's and the big intercooler.
