I saw a couple of Scott's photos in the other thread, and I know the rest of you have some good ones.

These are mostly from my karting days. 7 complete rebuilds on that motor in 18 months made for some great photos. :)

Not normal, but not uncommon. This strut holds the seat to the chassis.
Attachment 215488

Not normal wear.
Attachment 215489

Don't get run over by other karts :bigtu:
Attachment 215490

This was caused when I ran WOT for a half a lap with no header during an endurance race. Thin cylinder left the piston 3" from exposed air; exhaust ports must have dragged in some extra air. extra air = cracked piston
Attachment 215491
Attachment 215492
Attachment 215493

See something missing?
Attachment 215494

I don't know how this happened. That's the flywheel and clutch, and the starter motor gears on the left.
Attachment 215495

Don't run over other karts :bigtu:
Attachment 215496

These two are from when the motor spat up a circlip and seized.
Attachment 215497
Attachment 215498

We think this happened from throwing a chain and cracking the pin. This pin holds the two halves of the crank together, with the rod in the middle. The rod from this incident is now the keychain for the trailer locks. It made interesting noises.
Attachment 215499
Attachment 215500

I wish I could take credit for this one.
Attachment 215501
There's an entire intake manifold and reed valve piece that's simply missing from that photo:
Attachment 215502

These are all from a single kind of motor, an IAME Leopard, which is a single-cylinder 125cc 2-stroke. Recommended redline is 15,000rpm, but anyone who was competitive was spinning them deep into the 17,000rpm range. Lifespan at those RPMs was 3-5 hours between full rebuilds, with a rebuild costing around $600.

i only messed up my shit once. too bad i didn't have a camera when it was laying upside down.

After that, my mom forbid me from having a motorcycle until my 18th b-day, so I got the Miata. Then my dad bought me a Ducati for my birthday, since he missed his riding buddy. Now I wear a leather, better-fitting jacket instead of the textile one that was slightly too big, and I don't do wheelies except on my dirtbike in grass.

SamS 11-01-2007 11:56 PM

I think the gap is more than 8 miles from home for him.

jesus what did you do with the car? strip it down for parts and get another shell? What was that headlight setup on your old car?

cjernigan 11-02-2007 12:16 AM

Man paul i've seen those pictures before, what a horrible crash. Did you just lose the ass end, drop a tire off the road or what?

paul 11-02-2007 12:20 AM

parted it out, kept the motor and trans with 235k miles and put it in the miata you all see in my avatar for another 45k miles before swapping it into my black 95.

the headlights were just 2 sets of projector driving lights. they were actually responsible for the accident. since they were so deep into the headlight opening they provided no peripheral light. i didn't see a deer running out until it was right in front of the car. missed the deer but then was so fucking distracted i didn't see i was going into a 90degree turn. launched it off a pile of dirt and rock and it came down on the roof.

cjernigan 11-02-2007 12:29 AM

Do i see you still have those headlights in the new red one in your avatar?

paul 11-02-2007 12:35 AM

no freaking way. that car runs the Hella 90mm light modules as found in the Moss Lowpro kit but with real HID setup from a Bimmer.

rmcelwee 11-02-2007 01:38 AM

Hit an F-150 in the rear axle (shithead ran a stop sign). I slid about 80 feet (was going just "slightly" over the speed limit) <G>. The shitty thing was that the car was a near perfect '92 with only 40K miles on it. One of the nicest Miatas I have ever seen. The great thing about it was that the asshole had his Harley in the back of his pickup truck (he didn't want to rock it by actually stopping at the sign) and that shit went flying into a ditch when I hit him.

a pack of raccoons pwnd my shit once dude i know how you feel luckily i lost my drivers rear tire while i was hydroplaining on there entrails, and went into a friggin farm fence taking out a few fence posts while i was out it. Luckily me and dad got her out and all the pannels beat out pretty well, and i wanted to see how she would look black anyway. ;) But the absolute best part was that since i showed up at 7AM the next day and told the farmer about it and had it all fixed by 8 or so he wasn't even mad i pwnd his fence. I also learned that you need to check the air in your spare tire cause most of the time that bitch is flat :td:

My first wreck ever was a bitch running a red making a left destroyed my wonderfull 94 camry xle and her shitty ass buick. :td:

All I know is that they AREN'T Nikasil. The class doesn't allow motor modifications, so everyone runs stock cylinders. You could probably call the importer, Jim Russell Karting for the US and Italian Motors for Canada. It's an IAME Parilla Leopard.

Same shit happened to me except I hit the windshield at a slight angle and then hit the rear quarter of a minivan about 10 ft away. The twisting motion of the windshield impact ripped 3/4 ligament on my right knee. My knee was the only thing damaged though. Here is a nice post op pic of my knee (does this count for broken parts?)

I don't have any pics of the bike because I never saw it again. I got my mom to drive out to the wrecker to look at it, insurance totalled it, and I got a check in the mail.

Amazing what 15 miles will do.

cjernigan 11-07-2007 07:18 PM

Poor turbo. Was your oil pressure too high or your oil drain too slow? Or was the "seal" just blown?

TurboTim 11-07-2007 07:43 PM

Pics are supposed to show the large sharp chunks missing from the inside edge of the turbine blades. This area was *clean* and dry before the install. There is significant radial play in both ends of the shaft, about 1/4 inch. I believe some object attempted to go thru the turbine, chewed up the blades, F'ed up the bearings and the oil rings. If I plug the oil drain fitting with my finger and blow on the pressure hose, I can easily blow thru both ends of the turbo.

cjernigan 11-07-2007 07:53 PM

Ohhh i see it now. There was soo much oil i couldn't really tell from glancing at it. Almost looks as bad that as mazdaspeed miata that detonated it's turbo into a bunch of pieces.

Savington 11-07-2007 09:44 PM

1 Attachment(s)
My buddy's old '02 WRX turbo. Forced Performance Evo3 16G. Our best guess is that extreme oil temps cooked the bearings and bent the shaft a tiny bit, and the rest is history. There was not a lot of shaft play, but the shaft was easily .100 out. It was messy.

what's amazing is that the mystery piece(s) of metal in question that damaged the turbo did no real damage to my motor after bouncing around in cylinders 3&4 for the initial 15 miles or the following 70 miles to Bruce's house to disassemble it all. some ping marks in the top of pistons 3&4 where it would have sandwiched it against the head where it's flat at the 2 sides. turns out i used a faulty compression gauge and when we got a good one of there the results were 179-185psi across all four cylinders when the motor was cold. we couldn't start it as no electronics or fluid lines were running to the motor.

http://miatamx5.com/pingedhead.jpg

TurboTim 11-08-2007 08:35 AM

So the initial measurements of ~120 front two ~90 back two with the damaged cylinder head are inaccurate? Did you try the accurate gauge on the damaged head before removing it? Or the inaccurate gauge on the new cylinder head? (if the bad gauge says 120 across the engine with the new head then maybe the old head isn't as bad as it may be)

I'm afraid to ask, but what sort of chunck of metal are in the front side of your cat?
