I thought those people visit mostly cr.net ...

PS3 is better looking than the Xbox360. I have had both(ultimate with hddvd drive and all the goodies), so the 'fanboy' in me is based on experience

Other than the controller the xbox has got nothing on the ps3, other than a library of games, which will improve when the ps3 has been out for as long as the xbox has.

PS. Uncharted was worth the 600 bucks for th ps3 that game is unbelievable.

Newbsauce 01-03-2008 09:20 AM

You want the 80 or 60 GB version.. since your paying at best buy.. you need to get the 80 to play the PS2 games. Not to mention the 40GB does not have wireless controllers. My 60GB plays PS2 games just fine. I bought several just for fun (GTA/Bully/Prince of Persia). Blu-Ray is stank nasty if your TV supports 1080p, and amazon runs buy one get one free sales on them making it even more appealing.

Suggestions for first games to buy:
Warhawk
Ratchet and Clank

40 gig doesnt have wireless controllers?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1190677842792

Games: Uncharted, All Pro Football (its fun and i dont know why), and COD4

Offtopic- Anyone hope for netflix support for watching movies? That would be awesome.

I don't know Tony. Doesn't sound like any of your choices are ideal if you are just considering what you can get with your GC. Honestly, I'd invest in a higher quality standalone Blu-Ray player/HD player with my GC then look through ebay for a deal on a PS2. I've thought about getting a PS3 because it's a hell of a deal for a combo Blu-Ray/Game console but I don't have to worry about backward comptability with old games.

As for the console wars:

PS3 has tons of capability but it's being wasted right now. When PS3 actually gets a library, I'm there. Right now, you're paying premium prices for vaporware when you can pay discount prices for real games later.

In the meantime, Xbox Live kicks the crap out of Sony's multi-player/network offering. Neither of them can compare to PCs but Xbox is at least playable. When PS3 gets a library, I could have already have gone through every Gears of War, Halo 3, and CoD4 achievment. :bigtu:

My mistake, for some reason I thought they carried that trait over from the 20 GB. It does have 2 less USB, which I thought would never matter, but actually does in the long run.

I have to say, I've only demo'd Uncharted, but damn if it isn't cool.

The advantage to ps3 bluray is the ability to upgrade it, other players wont be upgradable.

As for xbox live, its like playing through pop up ads (again played on both ps3 and xbox), theres nothing like having free access to demos and online play. Makes the game more enjoyable.

Although I am looking forward to Lost PLanet for PS3. That should be fun.

You gotta remember I had (3) ps3s die on me. (first gen that was DOA, 2nd one died in the move to my apt. and the 3rd's PS failed)

So I tried to like xbox, but it was ugly, loud, and i used up most of my usb ports with wireless adapters and hddvd drive. The games we ok, but the user interface was hideious and unnatural. And paying for online play after i bought the game, when it was free for PCs drove me nuts

Xbox does have better controllers.

MS is after a different market then PS3. thats why Xbox has such a cheap initial price points but pricey add ons. Let the kids save up get the system, then in a few weeks of some more allowance get the wireless or hd dvd drive.

There is truth to this. My neighbor is a lead developer for RockStar here in Carlsbad; he manages the technical development of the Midnight Club series. There is indeed a huge bias within that company (and the dev commnity as a whole) that the PS3 is a sadly brain-dead platform. For example- its main CPU has no fixed->float operation in its instruction set, requiring loads of otherwise "simple" math to be offloaded into the GPU for preprocessing, wasting a fair amount of time and code. He also complains long and hard about the state of the IDE and the compiler itself- the development environment provided by Sony is apparently still buggy.

I wouldn't say that the PS3 games are all going to be "quick ports, without polish" but you're spot-on in that the Xbox360 is getting first priority, and that it's being considered the primary target platform.

Thats y I wont even look at xbox...considering a buddy of mine got one and got the red ring of death. Besides I hate microsoft products but im biased cuz i have the PS3

FHS 01-03-2008 11:24 AM

I like Sony consoles going back to the original Playstation so I really tried to like the PS3. Like I said, it has ton's of capability and when it gets games I like, I'm there. I'm not going to argue against anything said about one platform versus the other in terms of which is "better"...except the multiplayer capability. If you prefer free, sucky Sony online, that's you. ;)

Really, the deciding factor for me is which platform all my console gamer friends play. We play Xbox because of the ability to play each other over Xbox Live and the simple fact that Xbox actually has fun multiplayer games. We are all in our 30's and 40's, have decent jobs, mortgages, whatever, and a lot of us actually own both platforms. I think a lot of it does have to do with the head start Xbox had, but it's up to Sony to catch up with actual content.

mazda/nissan 01-03-2008 11:30 AM

i had xbox live back for Halo 2 for a couple months, but in the end ditched it for PC online games because they had free online play, i don't like to pay subscriptions which is why my name is still black instead of blue

FHS 01-03-2008 11:46 AM

Yeah, the PC is actually my platform of choice. I used to play all my FPS on PC for free. I still play MMOs online. I guess that's how I got used to the idea of subscription fees. There's no way clunky controllers can compete with keyboard/mouse. Honestly, if my friends playing consoles playded PCs, i probabaly never would have picked up a new gen console.

PS/ I have heard that if you have xboxlive and you get the red ring of death, you do not get credit for the time that MS has your box for repairs...

swimming108 01-03-2008 11:56 AM

The only reason that i would buy a ps3 is for Gran Turismo.

Now i was at the Tokyo Game Show in 2006 when the PS3 was introduced. I also stood in the line for 30 minutes to play GT HD while i was there. It truly is a beautiful game but it is still not worthy of the title GT5.

So my money will not be wasted on Sony's product until they get a firmware updates on the ps3, drop the prices a bit more, and finish GT5. My ps2 slim works great, has lots of great titles to play, and was cheap.

Yup, it is not just that company, the majority have the exact same attitude ...

Yup, the Sony tools are retarded compared to the Microsoft offerings. Last gen there was so much grumpiness towards Sony's junk but people had to do the games because the install base was big and the money were there ... Even if the first Xbox or PC were the main dev platforms on a project we always had to keep the PS2 stuff running and while coding to keep the PS2 in mind and its restrictions because it was the lead (lead = where the money from sales come from) SKU

This gen Microsoft has a good install base. The money are good (compare November 1.5million sales of CoD4 on 360 vs a little over 100K (a sad number) for a gem like Uncharted) so isn't it the perfect time for all those folks to do a revenge on Sony? ;)

I know! 3 awesome games and I was able to play them when I want!

Its like laughing at the three people shopping at circuit city while 3million of you wait inline to pile into walmart...

Just because a system is popular doesn't make it good.

Newbsauce 01-03-2008 12:23 PM

I'm more then happy with the game library I have going on my PS3.. I dont need 3,000 good games, I'm happy with my 4-6 great games that I play on the console. I barely have time for them as it stands.

Ben 01-03-2008 12:27 PM

For the record
-I personally have NEVER had an xbox live network problem in 3-3.5 years of subscription Gold level service
-One of the things that makes network multi player games fun is having a lot of people to play with & against. It gives you the option to play more games against a wider range of strategies and skill levels. Maybe things are better now, but the couple of times I've tried the Sony service, it was lame b/c there were not enough people on line to make anything happen.
