Agreed that Peter Aschwanden is a fabulous artist, and his illustrations were part of what made me read John Muir's VW manual from cover to cover like it was a novel. That book (and a crappy '71 Beetle) also taught me the foundations for pretty much every thing I know about auto repair today.
Still, the technical quality of the Bosch distributor drawing is fascinating. Notice how the whole thing is shaded, such that it properly reflects the assumption of a light source above and to the left of the part. Every little piece, even the spacers and bushings, is properly shaded, and the outer wall of the distributor housing is casting an accurate shadow on its own interior.
That's the kind of nice little detail you don't see in modern line drawings.
