I thought this post was kinda funny -

I've dynoed all of them--one has valve pockets machined and some porting work, close to the seat where it matters-- but ,they all dyno out well, I even made a special plate so I could isolate leak down, they seal perfectly even after many long track days where I routinely, turn 7600, and the work stands up; the car is fast! The labor cost on these heads has never exceeded $300, and I'm a retail customer!!
Find a shop with modern CNC stuff, and don't get hustled. I've been doing this stuff a long time, and I've done most of it myself- I know how much it should cost!
On the other hand, if you guys are talking flowing every port to the absolute max, you're wasting time and money.
Oh yeah, After the head has been disasembled it takes about 5 minutes to replace seals.

Hobie responds like he didn't realize he just got owned.

LOLA - 92 10-30-2007 10:54 AM

Hobie has become -
HOBIE - "DEFENDER OF THE HIGH PRICE SPONSORS"
It's almost like he gets a kick back from making sure that everyone buys from the sponsors.
I have observed this phenomenon quite a bit with him lately. He must be getting discounts from them........

Zabac 10-30-2007 10:58 AM

actually its a whole different phenomena, he is so sold on the product that he is a "blind believer" and in his opinion that is the only way since he took that route, he doesnt want to be the only one and wants others to take it as well
that probably makes no sense, but i tried

That hobie guy is a fucking idiot! well I'm not really that suprised cause, after all he is one of Gary's "supporting members".

Braineack 10-30-2007 11:40 AM

i want a valve job, how much should it cost.

$20,000.

why?

cause im my world the valve job would have to include a built miata from FM.

I'm confident that if you dropped off your head to an inferior shop, they'd call FM and ask for help because no one has ever done work on a miata, without asking FM's permission first.

Seriously, check your attitude. You've been warned.

omg hustler, everyone here thinks im crazy cause i was laughing so loud from that last post.

My response to Hustler's post.

FM doesn't even do their own fucking head work, they farm it out to a local machine shop just like we all would do. All these ------ interweb shops are the same. They don't want you to know you can take your head to virtually any machine shop and have it rebuilt for $150 as long as the guides and valves are good.

Ben 10-30-2007 01:58 PM

OK, that one was entertaining :)

You should find out which shop they use to get the heads done and leak out the info on m.net.

Braineack 10-30-2007 02:07 PM

I know which shop they use. I don't want to leak the info because I know an employee of the shop and I don't know how it might effect his job.

Ben 10-30-2007 02:19 PM

and you some how think that they're going to make this connection over the interwebz?

btw, they'll tell you what shop they use if you FUCKING ASK

as much as i would like to say no, its just a bad joke, im affraid i cant say that without sufficient proof, ie. a running 1.8T audi, lol
i have heared many versions of this story, i dont know which one is the real idiot that started it all with his ingenious idea, so far the search on m.net returns nothing, so it may be another forum that hosts this bright individual :dancegay:

Good. I'm not going to be the one to pull the trigger though. I just don't care enough. Also, they may have agreements with FM that they charge the same amount if people try and go direct. When I said someone charges $150 for what FM charges $500 for I wasn't speaking of that specific machine shop, I don't know what they charge. But I do know that when a lot of places were charging $500 for a DSM head (very, very similar to the Miata's) that a local shop to me was charging $150. This was for a thorough disassembly, inspecting, cleaning and valve job. Nothing fancy but as good as an OEM head provided the valves and guides were good. They said they always tried to find used stock valves for free when people needed them and that a guide job was about $90.
